Sandy and whatshisname were sitting side by side on the couch. That left me an easy chair or a wooden, old-fashioned rocking chair. I chose that one because rocking might soothe, or hide, the sudden sharp pain that tore through me. Jealousy? Despair? Relief? I had no idea. Maybe just hunger. Sandy pointed out a box of cupcakes on the coffee table between us, and a bottle of cola, off brand, which for some reason made me cranky. Like I wasn’t worth the real thing, but hey, all three of us had the same thing. Shut up, Ash, I told myself. Get over it.
