The day started on a terrible note for me. Firstly, I woke up to bad news about my mother’s health.
My mother had been ill for some weeks now and when we realized that there was no improvement, I suggested that she visits the hospital.
“There is a big problem”, My mother said to me the moment I picked up the call.
I ruffled my blanket as my eyes widened, with fear surging through my heart.
“What is the problem, mum?” I asked quietly, with my heart beating out of my chest.
“I did a medical check-up yesterday”, she started explaining with a cracked voice which indicated that she was in tears.
“I need a kidney transplant if I’m going to survive”, She dropped and for a minute, I froze in shock.
“What?” I screamed and jerked up, hoping that I was only hallucinating or having negative imaginations.
“Yes Alexis”, my mum said and for some seconds, I thought I had stopped breathing.
My phone dropped off my hands and landed on the floor, but I was so shocked to realize that.
Suddenly, I saw my mother slipping away, and I required no one to tell me that her survival was solely based on what I would do.
I sniffed harder, wiping the tears that had trickled out of my eyelids.
My fear and worry lay in the fact that we had no one to help. My mother was everything I had, and losing her was the last thing on my mind.
Her family had deserted her after she insisted on getting married to my father.
My father passed on when I was 18 and since then, it’s been just my mother and me.
I jerked up to my feet the moment I realized that it was past 8:am already.
“Oh my God!” I yelped in terror as I rushed into the bathroom to take a quick bath.
I got to the office and went about my daily activities, trying so hard to pretend that I was doing great.
“Good morning, sir”, I greeted the boss whose gaze was focused on the laptop on his desk.
From all indications, he was absent-minded and only used the laptop to conceal that.
“Good morning, sir”, I said again as my throat felt constricted.
It was difficult for me to pretend as though I were doing great. At intervals, I felt like wailing so loud and crying out my eyes, but then, I needed no one to tell me that I would be in trouble if that happens.
“Yes, how can I help you?” He finally asked as he lifted his head to peer into my eyes.
“I, I…”, I stuttered, trying to recall the reason behind coming to his office.
“I wanted to ask if the event of yesterday went well”, I finally said, flashing a very sincere smile.
I was the one who picked out the outfit he had worn, and it made me so proud and excited.
“I’m certain it went well. Your outfit was everything”, I went further, sounding casual and calm.
He scoffed and stared at me intently, causing me to shudder in fright.
