My assistant was standing before me, but I was extremely pissed that all I wanted to do was yell at her.
I was yet to get over what my grandmother had said to me at the meeting yesterday.
For a moment, I had thought she was joking, but her face didn’t transit to a smile and that was vivid evidence of her seriousness.
Angrily, I had left the meeting, not without observing the smirk on Stan’s face.
I felt horrible and disrespected, but there was absolutely nothing I could do about it.
“Is everything okay, sir?” Alexis asked as she stared at me intently.
“Thank you for the outfit yesterday. I guess you can leave now”, I replied, trying so hard to avoid sounding rude.
She nodded her head and made to leave when I observed the moistness of her eyelids.
“Wait!” I called out as she turned to glare at me.
“What’s your name?” I asked sternly, without an iota of emotions.
I had wanted to ask if she was okay, but I couldn’t bring myself to do that.
Some years ago, I promised myself never to ask a lady such question because that would only cause them to trample on me with their deceit.
“I’m Alexis”, she said as she sniffed hard and hurriedly walked out of the office.
I cared less about that because all that engulfed my heart was the need to do something before Stan becomes the smart one.
Time was ticking already and with each minute that passed, I felt the pressure getting up on my sleeves.
Just then, James walked into my office, causing me to jolt out of my thoughts.
“Still thinking of grandmother’s decision I guess”, James said as he trudged towards me and sank into the chair opposite where I sat.
I sighed deeply and nodded my head in affirmation.
“I guess I’m done for. I’ve thought about it and there doesn’t seem to be something I can do”, I said in exasperation, digging my hands into my hair.
“Perhaps you haven’t thought about it careful”, James objected, making me to glare at him sharply.
“I know you always want to help me, but there is nothing we can do in this case, because I’m never getting a girl pregnant!” I said defiantly as I clenched my fist, withholding the pain that came with such thoughts.
“Relax Nathan! I’m not saying you should do that. However, what if that’s the only option you have if you want to retain your position as the CEO?” James asked and for a minimum, I remained still.
“I would allow Stan to have it. He has always wanted that position, so it’s fine”, I said, with my throat becoming constricted.
Of course, it was not fine! That was one of my greatest nightmare, but getting a girl pregnant was definitely the worst.
“You know that’s not true. I know that’s not what you want”, James replied with a soft voice.
“There is no other option”, I replied dejectedly, as I sank deeper into my seat.
“Perhaps, there is…”, James said as he drifted off in thoughts.
I sat up eagerly, waiting for his next utterance.
“We could find you a surrogate”, James dropped and for a minute, I gaped at him blankly.
