*Alex's POV*
My brother, Darren, and I were startled when we came across the old man's body in the woods. He was so close to our camp. We looked at each other concerned. "Scan the area." I said sternly. Darren nodded his head and went the opposite direction.
They are here somewhere. I lower my head and listen. I hear the trees, the wind, a river to the West of me, and then I hear it. Hard stomps through the woods. That's not Darren, he was trained better than that. I make my way towards the stomps. The Scale must have come back to look at it's handy work or worse, it's looking for us. I was about to come through the tree line when I see her. She's beautiful. Her dishwater brown hair brushes her shoulders even in a pony tail. I close my eyes and let her scent rush into my nose. She smells of dirt and roses, but most of all human. She's not safe here, I have to get her back to the campsite.
I see Darren across the meadow. We make eye contact and he smiles. I shake my head and mouth, "Darren, don't!" But before I could do anything about it, he had a knife to her throat. She goes completely stiff. The amusement on my brother's face pisses me off even more. To make matters worse, he shoves his hand up her shirt "feeling for her naval" I presume. Only my brother would humiliate a human like that so he could get handsy. When he finally let's her go she is furious. I like the fire in this girl. Darren starts walking towards the Rebellion, our camp was the other direction. No, we can't just trust everyone that shows up here with the weight of the Rebellion. I open my mouth to ask my brother what the hell he was thinking, when she speaks, "That's my father." My conscience stops me, she doesn't need someone like me walking into her life. She doesn't need Darren either. She needs the Rebellion.
The human race is desperately fighting for their lives. The Scales kill them mercilessly and take over their cities as if they were their own. Even though the odds of the humans winning were thin, their passion for revenge was stronger than the Scales thirst for bloodshed. It was settled then, she needed her own kind. As soon as Darren takes her to the Rebellion, we will never see or talk to her ever again.
The thought of that makes my chest hurt.
