Chapter Two: Viva La Rebellion

583 Words
Many questions run through my mind as I sit there in the thorn bush mourning my father's death. One of those being "Why?" Why did the Scales come here in the first place? Why are they killers? Why did our lives mean so little to them? I had no answers to these questions, but at this point answers to my questions didn't matter. I needed to find the Rebellion.  I went back in the direction I came from. My father said to go through the trees, so I am going to start there and head North. "Yeah solid plan Val, let's walk back to where your father was decapitated and then wonder around hoping to find what the Scales are probably looking for." I thought to myself. I continued walking trying not to pay attention to what I will be walking up on. An hour had passed before I realized I was being followed. The moment I stopped, I had a knife to my throat.  "Don't move a muscle" the strange man demanded. His scent was all musk and sweat. My back tensed at the feeling of his chest.  "I don't want any trouble" I said as my hands went into the air. "I'm just trying to fin--"  "Did you kill the man?" he demanded again. Before I could respond He was untucking my shirt from my pants with his free hand. "Whoa, hey there!" I tried reaching with my hand as the knife tightened on my throat. His hand slid up my shirt straight to my naval and once he felt it was there he released me. My mind was still reveling at the feeling of his hand on my skin. Again, I was looking into the eyes of a gorgeous man. Dark brown almost black eyes stared back at me. A grin on his perfectly shaped face as if what he just did to me was amusing.  "What the hell!" I screamed as I went toward him with my knife in hand ready to cut his sun kissed skin. He grab my arm quickly, making me drop my knife. I was forced to really look at him. He was tall and nicely built and his black hair lightly tousled from grabbing me.  "I had to make sure you were one of them." He stated calmly. "I had to make sure you weren't the one who killed that man over there."  I turned my head to look away from him. My eye falling on the body of my father just a few yards away in a bush. I closed my eyes in pain from the tears that threatened to fall. "That's my father." I said softly. He let go of me and we stood there in silence for a moment. He started walking through the woods. I followed him as we slowly left my father's body behind.  He introduced himself, "I'm Darren." Not looking back to met my gaze.  "Valentine" I said quietly. "Like the holiday?" He questioned. I was surprised by his question. Not many people remember that holiday. It wasn't as popular as Christmas or any other holiday really.  "Yeah, just call me Val." I confessed. I was just about to ask where he was going when he started speaking.  "What were you guys looking for?" He asked.  I looked him square in the face and said "The Rebellion." "Well you came to the right place." he said as he continued to push through the heavily thickened trees. Pulling a branch to the side to show mountains ranging for miles. "Viva La Rebellion." he said.
