Board Meeting
During a board meeting with the management and directors of his company, Mary suddenly rushed in, looking stressed but still strikingly beautiful. Luke immediately stopped talking as she interrupted.
"Hello, ma’am," he greeted.
"I'm so sorry, sir. I’m really sorry," she apologized repeatedly, flustered.
"Please, sit down, beautiful," Luke said with a slight smile, motioning for her to take a seat. He then continued where he left off in the meeting.
After the meeting was over, he approached her. "Hello, beautiful. Can you stay for a while?"
"Yes, sir. I’m so sorry for being late," she said, her voice apologetic.
"That’s not a problem," Luke replied. "But don’t let it happen again."
"Which of my companies do you work for, and what position do you hold there?" I asked, looking deeply into her eyes. I couldn’t help but wonder how I might ask her out for drinks. Maybe if I make it seem like I just need to know her as a colleague, she’ll agree...
"Sir, are you okay?" she asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"I'm sorry, dear," I replied, slightly flustered. "Please, what's your name?" I added, trying to maintain a professional tone, though my mind was still distracted by her presence.
Mary hesitated for a moment, sensing something had shifted in Luke's demeanor, but she quickly composed herself and smiled. "My name is Mary Thompson, sir. I’m the head of operations for your Eastern branch," she said, her voice calm but warm.
Luke nodded, taking in the information. He had heard of Mary before—her reputation for efficiency and leadership was well-known, but seeing her in person was something else entirely. There was an undeniable presence about her that he couldn't quite shake.
"Well, Mary," he said, trying to keep his focus sharp, "it’s a pleasure to finally meet you in person. I’ve heard good things about your work. I’m sure your branch is in good hands."
"Thank you, sir. I’m just doing my best to contribute," she replied modestly, though there was a glimmer of pride in her eyes.
Luke paused, studying her for a moment, the air between them charged with an unspoken tension. He reminded himself to remain professional. "I appreciate your dedication. We can always count on you, I trust?"
Mary nodded, though she sensed the undertone in his question. There was a brief silence, and then she looked up at him, meeting his gaze with a steady confidence. "You can always count on me, sir. That’s what I’m here for."
Luke smiled again, this time more genuinely. "Good to hear. In fact, we may need your expertise on a few upcoming projects. Perhaps we can discuss them over dinner sometime?"
Mary blinked, surprised but not offended. Her heart fluttered slightly at the casual invitation, but she quickly checked her emotions. It was important to keep things professional—especially in a corporate setting.
"That sounds like a great idea, sir," she replied carefully, "but perhaps we could schedule a formal meeting for the discussion? I prefer to keep my personal and professional lives separate."
Luke smiled, appreciating her professionalism. "Of course, I understand. We’ll keep it business. How about next week? I’ll have my assistant set something up."
Mary nodded, feeling a slight sense of relief, though she couldn’t deny there was something intriguing about Luke’s interest. "That works. Thank you, sir."
"Alright then," Luke said, standing up. "I’ll let you get back to work, Mary. But I look forward to our meeting."
As he turned to leave, he couldn’t help but glance back at her one last time. She had the kind of presence that made everything else fade into the background. He didn’t know where this would lead, but he certainly wasn’t going to make it easy on himself to find out.
Mary watched him go, still feeling the tension from their exchange. She hadn’t expected to catch his attention like that. But now, as she sat alone in the conference room, she found herself wondering if this could be more than just another business relationship.
