Chapter 5: Building bridges.

“What?!” Eve and Akihira exclaimed in unison, their voices filled with shock. Eve’s heart raced, her face flushing. Stay with the Satos? She barely knew Akihira, and now she was going to live under the same roof as him? “I-I…” Eve stammered, unable to form the words. Her chest tightened with anxiety. She didn’t want to live with people she didn’t know. Especially not Akihira, who was silent but intimidating in his quiet observation of her. Akihira finally spoke, his voice low and tense. “This wasn’t discussed with me.” Mrs. Sato’s laughter rang out, light and airy. “Oh, Akihira, you’ll be fine. Eve is a sweet girl, and this is about helping her and Emma settle in. Besides,” she added with a teasing smile, “you might make a friend.” Akihira turned his gaze toward Eve, his expression unreadable, though his eyes softened slightly. Eve could barely look at him, her cheeks burning with the awkwardness of the situation. She felt like an intruder in his life. “Fine,” Akihira sighed. “But we’re going to need some boundaries.” Eve barely nodded, her mind swimming with uncertainty and fear. How was she supposed to live here, let alone interact with people like Akihira and his mother? That evening, the four of them sat around the dinner table, the tension thick enough to be cut with a knife. Eve picked at her food, her appetite gone, while Akihira ate quietly across from her. His movements were precise, and though he hadn’t spoken to her since the living room, Eve could feel the weight of his presence. Mrs. Sato and Emma kept the conversation light, discussing family history and plans for their work. Eve's thoughts drifted, wondering how she could navigate living here without becoming more of a burden. As dinner drew to a close, Mrs. Sato clapped her hands together and turned to Akihira. “Akihira, why don’t you and Eve take some time to talk? Get to know each other. It’s important that you two find some common ground.” Eve’s pulse quickened, panic rising in her chest. The last thing she wanted was to be forced into a conversation with Akihira. But before she could protest, Emma gave her a gentle nudge. “It’ll be good for you, Eve. Go on.” With no way out, Eve reluctantly followed Akihira into the garden, where the evening air was cool and refreshing, though it did little to calm her nerves. The silence between them was heavy, and Eve had no idea how to start a conversation. Finally, Akihira broke the silence. “You don’t have to be so nervous,” he said, his voice softer than before, lacking the edge it had carried earlier. “I won’t bite.” Eve fidgeted with her sleeves, avoiding eye contact. “I’m… not good with people.” He raised an eyebrow, folding his arms. “I can see that. But you’ll have to get better at it if you’re going to make it through school. Running away isn’t going to help.” His words hit harder than Eve expected, and she flinched, remembering how she’d fled the classroom just the other day. Her throat tightened, but she managed to speak. “I… don’t know how.” Akihira’s gaze softened, and he leaned against a tree, his posture more relaxed. “Then start small. You’re already here, talking to me, aren’t you?” She blinked, surprised at his response. He wasn’t mocking her, nor was he pushing her away. He was trying to help her. “You don’t have to be loud or outgoing to make connections,” he continued. “Just be honest, and eventually, people will notice that. Confidence comes with time, but it won’t happen if you hide from everyone.” Eve was silent for a moment, absorbing his words. Could it really be that simple? Just… trying? “Why are you being so nice to me?” she asked quietly, her voice barely audible. Akihira glanced at her, his expression unreadable. “Because I know what it’s like to feel out of place. And if you’re going to be living here, we might as well get along.” For the first time that day, Eve felt a flicker of something other than anxiety. Maybe, just maybe, she could try to be better at this. She met Akihira’s gaze for a brief moment and nodded. “I’ll try.” He gave her a small, almost imperceptible smile. “Good. That’s all anyone can ask for.” The next morning, Eve woke up feeling different. Akihira’s words echoed in her mind, and for the first time in a long while, she felt a spark of determination. If she wanted things to change, she had to be the one to take the first step. She had spent too long running from everything, hiding in the shadows of her fear. At school, she found herself standing at the entrance to her classroom, nerves fluttering in her stomach. Her classmates were already inside, talking and laughing. Normally, she would have walked in quietly, hoping to be unnoticed. But today, she straightened her shoulders, took a deep breath, and stepped inside. Several students glanced her way, but she didn’t let their eyes scare her. Instead, she walked toward the girl she had noticed the previous day—Jenny. Jenny had seemed kind, smiling at Eve when no one else did. “Hi,” Eve said, her voice a little shaky but firm enough to be heard. Jenny looked up, surprised. “Oh, hey! Eve, right?” Eve nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. “Yeah. I-I was wondering if… maybe we could talk? I’m new, and…” Jenny smiled warmly, cutting her off with a wave of her hand. “Of course! Come sit with us.” Eve’s heart swelled with relief as she joined Jenny and her friends. They asked her questions about herself, and though she still felt nervous, she remembered Akihira’s words. Just be honest. As the day went on, Eve found herself laughing at some of their jokes, feeling a sense of belonging that she hadn’t felt in years. She was still shy, still hesitant, but for the first time, she wasn’t invisible. When the day ended, she walked home with a sense of pride and hope. Maybe things wouldn’t be perfect overnight, but she was ready to keep trying.
