Eve had been unable to shake off the encounter with the tall man, Akihira. His indifference, the way he barely flinched when she fell, and his cold gaze had left an indelible mark on her. As the days passed, the memory of their first meeting haunted her, gnawing at her self-worth. Was she so insignificant that a stranger couldn’t even be bothered to offer a hint of concern?
Her new classmates’ unexpected kindness contrasted sharply with Akihira’s unresponsive demeanor. It was as if the universe had dealt her two extreme ends of human interaction: warmth and apathy. Each time she saw him in the halls or around school, she felt a pang of anxiety and guilt. She wanted to make amends for her earlier behavior, but the thought of approaching him was daunting.
One afternoon, Eve found herself lingering at a distance as she spotted Akihira walking through the school corridors. She had resolved to apologize properly, but her nerves were in overdrive. Unsure of how to initiate a conversation, she decided to follow him, hoping to find the right moment to approach.
Eve’s steps were cautious and deliberate, trying to remain inconspicuous as she trailed behind Akihira. She felt a bit like a stalker, but the need to make things right pushed her forward. Her heart raced as she observed him from a distance, noting his tall frame and the way his movements seemed effortless and composed.
Akihira, seemingly oblivious to her presence, continued his path through the school grounds. He walked with a sense of purpose, his gaze fixed ahead, and every so often, he would glance at his watch or phone. Eve tried to maintain a respectful distance, but it became clear that he was aware of her shadowing him. She could feel his occasional sideways glances, each one making her heart sink further.
As the school day drew to a close, Eve followed Akihira to the exit gate. He suddenly stopped, causing Eve to freeze in her tracks. Her heart pounded as she wondered why he had stopped. Her mind raced with thoughts of how she would apologize, what she would say, and whether he would even listen.
Akihira turned abruptly, his cold gaze meeting Eve’s. She felt a shiver run down her spine as he took a step closer, his expression unreadable.
“Why are you following me?” His voice was low and sharp, carrying an air of arrogance that made Eve flinch. The words cut through her like a knife, and she struggled to find her voice.
“I—I’m sorry,” Eve stammered, her eyes dropping to the ground. “I just wanted to apologize for... earlier. I didn’t mean to run away like that.”
Before Akihira could respond, a voice called out from a distance. Eve looked up to see a woman approaching. She was elegant and poised, with a warm smile that contrasted sharply with Akihira’s cold demeanor. As she drew nearer, Eve recognized her as Akihira’s mother.
“Akihira!” the woman called out. “I’m here to pick you up.”
Akihira’s expression softened slightly at the sight of his mother. “I can go home by myself,” he said, his tone more relaxed but still distant.
His mother, however, had already noticed Eve. She looked at her with curiosity and a hint of recognition. “Oh, who is this?” she asked, her gaze shifting between Akihira and Eve.
Akihira hesitated before shrugging slightly. “She was just... apologizing for something.”
His mother’s eyes brightened with interest. “Well, it’s nice to meet you, dear, I'm Mrs. Sato, akihira's mother” she said, extending a friendly hand. “I’m Akihira’s mother. And you look so familiar. Do you happen to know someone named Emma? You look quite a bit like her.”
Eve was taken aback by the mention of her mother’s name. Her mind raced as she processed the unexpected connection. “Yes, Emma is my mother,” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m Eve.”
Akihira’s mother’s eyes widened with recognition. “Emma’s daughter? How wonderful! It’s been so long since I last saw her. We were very close when we were younger.”
Eve felt a surge of both surprise and warmth at this revelation. She had often heard her mother speak fondly of a childhood friend, but she hadn’t expected to meet her in this manner. “I didn’t know you were friends,” Eve said, her voice trembling slightly.
“Well,” Akihira’s mother continued, her smile widening, “it seems fate has brought us together again. How about we catch up over dinner sometime? It would be lovely to reconnect with Emma and meet you properly.”
Eve felt a wave of relief and gratitude wash over her. “I’d like that,” she said, her nerves easing slightly. “Thank you.”
Akihira’s mother glanced at her son, who stood silently by, his gaze unreadable. “What do you think, Akihira? Would you like to join us for dinner as well?”
Akihira’s expression remained neutral, but there was a hint of curiosity in his eyes as he looked at Eve. “I suppose,” he said, shrugging slightly. “If it’s convenient.”
“Perfect,” Akihira’s mother said cheerfully. “Let’s plan for dinner tomorrow evening then. I’ll call Emma and arrange everything.”
As Eve watched Akihira’s mother turn to make the arrangements, she felt a mixture of relief and apprehension. The unexpected invitation to dinner was a chance to make amends and reconnect, but it also meant facing Akihira again in a more personal setting.
Eve glanced at Akihira, who was now looking at her with a hint of curiosity. Despite his earlier coldness, there was a faint glimmer of something else in his eyes. Maybe, just maybe, this dinner would offer a new beginning for both of them.
As the two parted ways, Eve couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of a much deeper connection, one that would unravel slowly and change her life in ways she couldn’t yet imagine.
