Volume 1, Chapter 4: Class Reunion

1490 Words
After taking Fang Yun home, Mu Chen went to a class reunion alone. Not for anything else, but to see his mentor one last time. At the entrance of the Jiale Club, stood a woman dressed provocatively, carrying the latest LV bag. Her figure and looks were incredibly attractive to men. A dozen men surrounded her, staring at the Lamborghini beside her. "Shen Lingling, I can't believe it! I just saw you driving a Bentley last month, and this month you've switched to a Lamborghini!" "Our class beauty is definitely doing the best now; she changes cars faster than I change clothes." Back in school, Shen Lingling was always the object of the boys' affections. This class reunion was no exception. "It didn't cost much. My dad said this car is more suitable for a girl, so he bought it for me." Hearing Shen Lingling's words, another round of praise erupted. What boy doesn't like a beautiful, wealthy, and successful woman? The girls around her, seeing this scene, harbored some resentment towards Shen Lingling, but they all held back. After all, they weren't as rich or as pretty as Shen Lingling. Several of her sycophantic girlfriends swarmed around her, their eyes full of envy. "Lingling, can I take a picture in your car? I want to try sitting in a sports car!" Shen Lingling smiled, gently stroking her hair. "Sure, take as many pictures as you like." Back in school, Shen Lingling had always enjoyed this kind of adulation. "Lingling, I haven't seen you in a while, you've become even more beautiful in photos, I almost didn't recognize you." Not far from the crowd, a young man stepped out of a Porsche. This was Yang Ping, one of the richest kids in the class back then. "I think you've told me all your girl-chasing tips." Shen Lingling walked up to Yang Ping, gently nudged him, her attitude unusually affectionate. "Brother Ping, you've finally arrived! We've been waiting for you for ages." "Yeah, Brother Ping, we've all been waiting for you. Let's go in as soon as you're here." As soon as Yang Ping arrived, all the male classmates fawned over him. In society, they all needed Yang Ping's help and were eager to cultivate a good relationship with him. Mu Chen coldly observed everything before him. He wasn't interested in these classmates; he just wanted to see his teacher as soon as possible. "Oh, isn't this the famous Young Master Mu? I thought you weren't coming today." Yang Ping walked up to Mu Chen. One was dressed in a suit and designer clothes, while the other was dressed in cheap clothes. "Ugh, what's that smell? It smells like scallions. Mu Chen, did you finish cooking for your wife and mother-in-law and come out to see us without showering?" Back in school, Mu Chen was also very wealthy and always looked down on Yang Ping, who harbored resentment. But later, the whole of Jiangcheng knew that Mu Chen's family had gone bankrupt, and he was forced to marry into the Fang family, becoming a live-in son-in-law. "Ping-ge, it's not just the smell of scallions, it smells like a toilet too! He probably just emptied the toilet at home." "You know what, it really is! How can a good-for-nothing like you have the nerve to eat with us? I lose my appetite next to you." Yang Ping's admirers joined in mocking Mu Chen. They hadn't dared to do that when Mu Chen was rich, but things were different now. Mu Chen didn't even have a job; he'd been staying home for three years, doing laundry and cooking for his mother-in-law. "Yang Ping, he's a classmate, why are you arguing with him? This poor bastard is probably just here to freeload," Shen Lingling walked over to Yang Ping, looking Mu Chen up and down. She hadn't expected that the once arrogant Mu Chen would actually become a good-for-nothing. The clothes he was wearing could be bought for two hundred yuan outside. "Lingling, you're right. He probably couldn't earn this much in a lifetime." Laughter erupted around them. "So young and already a gigolo, what a disgrace to men." "Yeah, I used to think he was pretty capable, but I didn't expect him to be such a wimp." Mu Chen shook his head helplessly and walked to Yang Ping's side. "Yang Ping, I just came to see the teacher." "A piece of trash like you, even the teacher would be ashamed to see you, how dare you face the teacher?" "That's none of your business." Mu Chen said coldly. Yang Ping smiled contemptuously and turned away, ignoring Mu Chen. "Let's go, brothers! Let's drink our fill today, until we're drunk!" Yang Ping waved his hand, and everyone followed him into the Jiale Club. In the Jiale Club, the classmates sat in twos and threes, only Mu Chen stood out. "Lingling, I heard you're going to work at Zhiqu Real Estate tomorrow? It's said to be a pillar industry in Jiangcheng, there are so many people who would kill to get in!" "It's not as hard as you guys say." Shen Lingling smiled, being able to work at Zhiqu Real Estate was an honor for her. "It's all because our Lingling is so outstanding! Not only is she going to work at Zhiqu Real Estate, but she'll be the president's personal secretary!" "Lingling, if you ever become successful, don't forget your good sisters! We want to work at Zhiqu Real Estate too!" The news that Shen Lingling was going to work at Zhiqu Real Estate immediately drew praise from those around her. Everyone's work in Jiangcheng was more or less related to Zhiqu Real Estate, and upon hearing that Shen Lingling was going to become the president's secretary, they all rushed forward to curry favor. Mu Chen raised an eyebrow. Zhiqu Real Estate again? He hadn't expected the company his father left him to be so impressive. Mu Chen didn't see his teacher until the party ended; it was a wasted trip. Just as he was about to leave alone, Yang Ping stood in front of him. "Mu Chen, it's so late, how are you planning to get home?" Mu Chen glanced at Yang Ping and said, "I'm walking home, of course." "Yang Ping, you don't think this good-for-nothing drove here, do you? His wife probably didn't even give him taxi fare." Shen Lingling also chimed in, mocking Mu Chen. The flattery she'd just received made her a little smug, and she looked down on the good-for-nothing Mu Chen even more. "Yeah, how could he possibly drive here? See the car at the door? I know you'll never be able to afford one. Now, if you just kneel down and call me, Mu Chen, a good-for-nothing, I'll let you ride in it once," Yang Ping said disdainfully, ruffling Mu Chen's hair. "Mu Chen, it's late at night, Brother Yang can't bear to let you walk home alone. He's doing this for your own good, you should appreciate it," someone chimed in. The class reunion was both a gathering and a competition; everyone, good or bad, had driven there. "Mu Chen, the designated driver is already waiting at the door. If you miss this opportunity, you'll never ride in a luxury car again!" "Yang Ping, you're wrong about that. Doesn't this good-for-nothing have a rich wife? She'll probably get him a car when he gets home." Shen Lingling, wanting to see Mu Chen kneel, stayed nearby. "Haha, Lingling, you don't know this, do you? He's no different from a servant at his mother-in-law's house, washing clothes and cooking for her every day. If he were born in ancient times, he'd be a slave, the lowest of slaves." Mu Chen didn't want to pay attention to these people, but their repeated provocations and mockery only fueled his anger. Not seeing his teacher today had already angered him, and now he was even more furious. Mu Chen grabbed Yang Ping's outstretched hand, raised an eyebrow, and said, "Back in school, didn't I teach you to be humble?" Yang Ping tried to shake Mu Chen off, but couldn't move. He gritted his teeth, "The past is the past. We're different now. You'll be trampled under my feet for the rest of your life. And I think you should never be too humble, otherwise, what's the difference between you and a coward like you!" Mu Chen wanted to say something more, but gave up. He released Yang Ping's hand and walked out of the Jiale Club without looking back. Yang Ping touched his wrist; the spot where Mu Chen had grabbed him was bright red. "Until we meet again," Mu Chen waved. Watching Mu Chen's retreating figure, Yang Ping's eyes gradually turned cold, memories of his student days flooding back. He would make Mu Chen kneel before him one day, never to be able to hold his head up again!
