The Grand Introduction

“So, that’s my spiel,” Charlie says, grinning. She leans against a wall, the worn Converse scuffing slightly against the airport floor. “My name is Charlie, daughter of Stars and Stripes, and I am quirkless. I’m seventeen, in eleventh grade, pansexual, and currently single!” She winks, and I have to admit, even though I’m still fuming from the initial collision, the way she just laid it all out there is… kind of impressive. It’s not the demure, “I’m so shy” crap Deku would pull. This is blunt, honest, and completely unexpected. It’s… different. “You’re… loud,” I mutter, mostly to myself, but she hears me. “Hey, at least I’m memorable,” she retorts, shoving her hands into her pockets. “Unlike, say, a certain explosive blonde who’s got all the personality of a wet noodle.” She smirks, and I feel a surge of something that isn’t pure rage. It’s… annoyance, maybe? Or is it something else? I’m not sure, and honestly, I don’t like it. “You think you’re so tough,” I growl, trying to regain control. “Quirkless and running your mouth off.” “Tough isn’t about quirks, Kacchan,” she says, her voice low. “It’s about guts. And trust me, I’ve got plenty of those. I’ve had to navigate the world without a quirk, dealing with the expectations of being Stars and Stripes’ daughter. People think I’m some spoiled brat, but they don’t see the work I put in, the strategies I develop, the way I use my brain to compensate for what I lack. It’s not easy, but I’m not helpless.” She pauses, a thoughtful expression crossing her face. “Besides, I’ve got a pretty wicked sense of humor. That’s a superpower in itself, right?” I scoff. “Superpower? You call that a superpower?” “It’s gotten me out of a lot of sticky situations,” she says, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “And let’s be honest, it’s way more fun than just blowing things up.” “I’m not here for fun,” I snap, but my voice isn’t as forceful as I intend. She’s got this way of… getting under my skin. It’s infuriating, but there’s something else there too, something I can’t quite place. “Right,” she says, smirking. “You’re here to be the best. The strongest. The most explosive hero ever. I get it. But maybe, just maybe, there’s more to being a hero than just brute force. Maybe you need a little… strategy. A little… finesse.” I glare at her, trying to muster my usual intimidation, but it’s not working. She’s just… staring back, her gray-blue eyes unwavering. It’s unsettling. “What do you know about being a hero?” I challenge, crossing my arms. “More than you think,” she replies, her voice suddenly serious. “My dad’s the number one hero, remember? I’ve seen it all. The pressure, the expectations, the sacrifices. It’s not all glory and explosions, Kacchan. Sometimes, it’s about the quiet moments, the small acts of kindness, the strategic thinking that can save lives without a single blast of energy.” I’m speechless. I’ve never had anyone talk to me like this, not Deku, not Todoroki, not anyone. She’s not afraid of me, not intimidated by my quirk. She’s… challenging me. And for some reason, I don’t hate it. “So,” she says, breaking the silence. “Ready to explore the Big Apple? I know a great ramen place a few blocks from here. Authentic, not some tourist trap.” I hesitate. I’m supposed to be focused on training, on becoming the best. But… this girl… she’s different. And the thought of spending time with her, even if it’s just for some ramen, isn’t entirely unpleasant. “Fine,” I grunt, trying to sound nonchalant. “Lead the way.” As we walk, I can’t help but think about what she said. Maybe she’s right. Maybe there’s more to being a hero than just explosions. Maybe… just maybe… this quirkless, sarcastic, infuriating girl is going to teach me something. And for the first time in a long time, the thought doesn’t fill me with dread. It fills me with… something else. Something I haven’t felt before. And I’m not sure what it is, but I’m definitely going to find out.
