🌙 From Strangers to Something More Episode -5 : The Love That Stayed The confession changed everything. And yet… At the same time, nothing changed at all. Arham was still annoying. Erum was still quiet. He still talked too much. She still rolled her eyes at almost everything he said. But now there was something between them that neither tried hiding anymore. Love. Simple. Real. Comfortable. --- The days after their confession became some of the happiest days of Erum’s life. Not because every moment was perfect. But because for the first time, she felt emotionally safe with someone. One afternoon, they sat together in the library while rain touched the windows softly outside. Erum was focused on her notes while Arham stared at her instead of studying. Finally she sighed. “You’ve looked at the same page for ten minutes.” “I’m thinking.” “You’re definitely not.” “I’m thinking about how someone can look pretty while threatening exam papers.” Erum closed her book slowly. “You’re distracting.” “You love me.” “That doesn’t make you less distracting.” Arham smiled proudly. “That’s still progress.” Erum shook her head, but the smile on her face betrayed her immediately. And honestly— These small moments became her favorite part of life. --- Weeks later, semester break officially began. Most students left campus happily. But for the first time, Erum hated leaving university. Because university meant him. The bench. The library. The cafeteria. The rainy corridors. Everything held memories now. That afternoon, while students packed bags around them, Arham noticed her unusual silence. “What happened?” “Nothing.” “You’re doing the quiet-overthinking thing again.” Erum looked away. “We won’t meet every day now.” For once, Arham didn’t joke immediately. Instead, his expression softened. Then quietly, he moved closer beside her. “We’re not strangers anymore, Erum.” Her chest tightened slightly at those words. “I know,” she whispered. “And I’m not going anywhere.” Those words healed something inside her that she never knew how to explain. --- During the semester break, they talked constantly. Late-night messages. Long phone calls. Random photos during the day. Sometimes they talked about serious things. Sometimes about absolutely nothing. And somehow, even silence during calls felt comforting. One night around 2 AM, Arham suddenly asked: “Can I ask something honestly?” “You’re already asking.” “I’m serious.” Erum smiled slightly into the darkness of her room. “Okay. Ask.” “What was your first impression of me?” She instantly answered: “Annoying.” Arham gasped dramatically. “That hurts.” “You asked honestly.” “Fine,” he replied. “My first impression of you was scary.” She laughed quietly. “Scary?” “You looked like you’d judge my entire existence.” “…Maybe I did.” “See?” For a few seconds, both laughed softly. Then Arham’s voice became quieter. “But honestly… I think I noticed you before we even talked.” Erum went silent. “What do you mean?” “You always looked lonely.” That sentence hit her heart instantly. Because it was true. Before him… She had been lonely for a very long time. --- As months passed, their relationship became stronger. Not louder. Stronger. They learned each other slowly. Arham learned that Erum overthought when she cared deeply. Erum learned that Arham joked when he was emotionally nervous. He learned her favorite coffee. She learned when his smile was fake. He learned how to calm her anxiety. She learned how to silence his self-doubt. And somewhere between all of those small discoveries… They became home to each other. --- But love also came with fear. Especially for Erum. One evening, while sitting together on the university rooftop after class, she suddenly asked: “Do you ever think about the future?” Arham looked at her carefully. “All the time.” “What if one day things change?” “They will.” Her eyes lowered slightly. “What if feelings change too?” For the first time, Arham answered without joking. “They might.” Erum’s chest tightened instantly. But then he continued softly: “Love isn’t about never changing.” She looked at him again. “It’s choosing someone even while life changes.” Silence surrounded them. Warm silence. Then slowly, he held her hand. “And I’ll keep choosing you.” That sentence stayed inside her heart forever. --- Near the end of the year, university organized one final event before winter holidays. The campus glowed with lights again. Music echoed through the evening air. Students danced, laughed, and celebrated freedom after exams. But Arham and Erum quietly escaped the crowd again. Just like before. They walked toward the football ground where the city lights could be seen from far away. Cold wind surrounded them. Erum folded her arms slightly from the cold. Without saying anything, Arham removed his hoodie and placed it around her shoulders. “You’ll get sick.” “What about you?” “I’m sacrificing myself romantically.” “That’s embarrassing.” “You love it.” “…Maybe a little.” Arham placed a hand dramatically over his heart. “She admitted it. Historic moment.” Erum laughed again. And once more, Arham realized something terrifyingly beautiful: He could spend his entire life trying to hear that laugh. --- Later that night, they sat together quietly on the empty bleachers. The campus lights looked beautiful from a distance. Erum leaned slightly against his shoulder without thinking. The moment surprised both of them. But neither moved away. Arham looked down at her carefully. “You’re comfortable with me now.” She closed her eyes slightly. “Yes.” That simple answer meant more to him than any dramatic confession ever could. Because Arham knew her silence. He knew how difficult trust was for her. And yet— She trusted him enough to rest beside him peacefully. --- Time continued moving forward. Second year became third. Life became busier. Harder. More serious. Friends changed. Dreams became larger. Responsibilities increased. But somehow, despite everything… They remained together. Not perfectly. But faithfully. Whenever they fought, they came back. Whenever one became distant, the other stayed patient. Whenever life became heavy, they carried it together. And slowly, without realizing it… Their relationship stopped feeling like a temporary university romance. It began feeling permanent. Real. Like a future. --- One rainy evening, almost two years after their first meeting, they returned once again to the old bench outside the library. The same place where everything began. Rain touched the campus softly. Students hurried past them exactly like that first day. Erum looked around quietly before smiling. “It still feels the same.” Arham shook his head gently. “No.” “What changed?” He looked at her. “We did.” For a moment, neither spoke. Then softly, honestly, Erum whispered: “You know what scares me?” “What?” “That one day this will become a memory.” Arham moved slightly closer. “Then we’ll make enough memories that one won’t be enough.” Tears almost filled her eyes again. Not from sadness. But because she had spent so much of her life believing love was temporary. And yet here he was— Still staying. Still choosing her. Still loving her gently. --- The rain became heavier. Students disappeared into buildings. The campus slowly emptied around them. Arham looked at her carefully for a long moment before smiling softly. “So…” “What?” “Is this seat still free?” Erum stared at him for a second. Then finally laughed through her tears. “For you?” She intertwined her fingers with his slowly. “Always.” 🌙 THE END
