Chapter 10 — He Stayed The apartment went silent. Not peaceful silent. The kind that made Ava hear every tiny sound—the hum of the refrigerator, the ticking wall clock, even the uneven rhythm of her own breathing. Three more knocks echoed through the room. Ava flinched. The cold air from the vent brushed across her arms, raising goosebumps. “Who is that?” she whispered. Jace stepped in front of her. “Stay behind me.” Dre slowly pushed himself against the wall, breathing through his pain. The knocking stopped. Then came a faint scrape against the other side of the door. Ava's stomach tightened. Something slid underneath it. An envelope. Jace crouched and picked it up. The paper trembled slightly in his hand. He opened it. His expression changed. Ava noticed. “What is it?” Jace didn't answer. She took one step closer. The floor creaked. Jace immediately looked toward the hallway. Ava stopped breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Then the bedroom door slowly swung inward. No one was touching it. Dre whispered, “Tell me that door was already open.” Jace didn't answer. His eyes stayed fixed on the darkness beyond it. Ava felt her pulse pounding in her ears. “Jace…” He reached back without looking and found her hand. “Stay close.” She almost pulled away. Then something moved inside the bedroom. Ava gasped. Jace stepped forward. The light above them flickered once. Twice. Then went completely dark. Ava heard a quiet breath behind her. Someone was in the apartment. And it wasn't Jace.
