The Chase Begins

4:15 AM – The Motel Maya’s hands trembled as she locked the bathroom door behind her, gripping the sink for support. The night had been a blur of paranoia and adrenaline, but the worst part? They weren’t safe. Ava’s voice echoed in her mind: "One of us is compromised." Maya splashed cold water on her face, breathing heavily. Who? How? She replayed every step in her head. The discarded burner phone. The change of cars. The fake motel booking under a different name. They had covered their tracks. Hadn't they? A knock at the door. “Maya.” Ava’s voice was sharp, urgent. “We need to talk. Now.” Maya hesitated, then unlocked the door. Ava stood there, arms crossed, eyes cold and assessing. Behind her, Reed sat on the edge of the bed, head down, jaw clenched. “We need answers,” Ava said, her voice low. “Something isn’t adding up.” Maya’s stomach churned. “You think it’s him.” Reed’s head snapped up. “Are you serious?” Ava didn’t flinch. “The second we left the gas station, they were on us. Someone led them here.” Reed exhaled through his nose, shaking his head. “That’s ridiculous.” Ava wasn’t buying it. “Then tell me, Reed—why did you leave the room earlier?” Silence. Maya’s pulse quickened. He left? “I went to check the car,” Reed finally said, voice tight. “Wanted to make sure we weren’t being followed.” Ava narrowed her eyes. “And you didn’t think to mention that?” Reed exhaled sharply. “I didn’t think I had to justify every move I make.” The air in the room was thick with tension. Maya wanted to believe him. But Ava had a point. The timing was too perfect. Before she could say anything— A noise outside. All three of them froze. A low, rhythmic sound. Tires rolling across gravel. Slow. Deliberate. Maya’s throat went dry. Ava darted to the window, barely lifting the curtain. Her breath hitched. Black SUV. The same one from the gas station. “Shit.” Reed was already grabbing the duffel bag. “We have to go now.” Ava hesitated. “We can’t just—” Bang. The door rattled. Maya’s heart nearly stopped. Another bang. Harder. Then—silence. The handle turned. Locked. Maya’s fingers curled around the nearest object—a lamp. Ava had already pulled a switchblade from her pocket. Reed’s stance shifted, ready to fight. Then, from the other side of the door— A single, chilling word: “Run.” A voice Maya didn’t recognize. Deep. Amused. And far too confident. Then—BOOM. The door exploded inward, the force knocking Maya backward. Smoke filled the air, the splinters of wood barely settling before heavy footsteps stormed inside. A figure emerged through the haze. Tall. Dressed in black. Gun raised. Maya couldn’t move. The man’s eyes locked onto her. No mask. No hesitation. Just cold, calculated intent. Maya braced for the worst— And then— Reed moved first. In a blur, he tackled the man, sending them both crashing into the nightstand. Gunshot. Muffled. Off-target. Ava grabbed Maya’s arm. “We have to go!” Maya’s legs finally obeyed. They bolted toward the back exit— Only to see another shadow moving outside. Blocked. Trapped. Maya’s mind raced. If this was the end, she wasn’t going down without a fight. And then— A new voice. Sharp. Commanding. From the hallway. “We need them alive.” Maya’s blood ran cold. Not just them. Her. Victoria’s voice flashed in her mind. You have no idea what you’ve stumbled into. Maybe she was right. Maybe they really were in way over their heads. To be continued...
