CHAPTER 39: THE QUIET BEFORE CHOICE The city looked calm again, but Isabella no longer trusted calm things. Calm had become something she studied the way others studied storms, knowing it was never absence, only delay. From the balcony of the mansion, she watched the morning unfold in layers of soft light and movement. Traffic flowed below. Markets opened. Voices carried faintly through the air.
