May: Milk Moon

925 Words
The shadow had retreated deep in the forest, “I had just killed my brother” He couldn’t believe what he just did. He whispered to himself, “I told him not to break the concord, but he still had to go to her. He was so careless that he had to show himself to that human”. He was running fast, faster than his usual vampire speed.   He and Sebastian had been blood brothers, sons of two kingdoms of Helene. He is destined to be the king of vampires while Sebastian as the alpha of the wolves. They grew up together and hunted together. Today was going to be the same as any day that they were hunting but Sebastian had been smelling something different and while on the hunt, his wolf Koa had led him to a clearing. This clearing is the invisible line between humans and the Helene kingdom. Humans rarely venture past it and if they do, they are usually met with a spell to sleep and forget. They will wake up and return to their side of the forest as if nothing happened. But this human was special, she walked in the clearing and in plain sight. This is how she was spotted by Sebastian and the bear. The bear was a fae folk, once fae folks step on the clearing – vampires and wolves can kill them. The hunt was an activity and a way to patrol the kingdom. Even if fae folks just touch the border, they can be killed. Both vampires and wolves have ruled Helene for thousands of years in peace, but it feels like that would be over any time soon.   Cirino as his name implies like the sun, had been second best to Sebastian. Always compared to him and had defeated him in everything. Though they were blood brothers, Cirino had always felt he got the short end of the stick. Even the wolves looked down on his people, since their packs had flourished every hunt and their bond makes them very strong. While vampires had an innate personality of being in solitude. Their coven had been steadily decreasing as no vampire was interested in mating while wolves had made it their ultimate goal to find their mates and strengthen their brood.   Both Sebastian and Cirino’s men had met him once he arrived at the gates. All of the wolves felt Sebastian’s pain and slow death.   “A human had killed Sebastian, he broke the concord” Cirino had told Sebastian’s beta, Silvano.   “Impossible! No human has ever crossed the clearing for thousands of years and if they have, they do not possess the power to kill an alpha blood wolf!” Silvano had replied to Cirino   “Are you calling my master a liar Silvano? Know your place! We must secure the clearing!” Thyone had hissed to the Beta.   Silvano had mind linked everything to the pack’s elders and Sebastian’s parents, the wolves were howling and mourning the loss of their prince, the future Alpha. “We will retrieve his body; we must go after this human.” Silvano shouts in haste as he starts to change into his wolf, Frost. Cirino wanted to stop them but he knew that wolves will follow their Alpha’s instruction and will never listen to him. He commanded his men to come with him and follow the packs to the clearing because he knew they will never find his body. The girl and her companions had taken Sebastian’s body when they heard her scream. Cirino was sure that Sebastian will be burned because humans will never understand what fae folks are and a wolf turning into a human is an abomination. The other side of the clearing, mind links do not work, Sebastian is as good as dead.   Everyone stood the edge of the clearing where Helene kingdom ended, they can see the blood and the dead bear but no body of Sebastian. All the wolves were howling, the pain in the whole pack can be felt. However, the vampires felt nothing, not even sadness which is questionable as they should be feeling wretched because their own vampire prince must be feeling sad as he lost his blood brother. Cirino knew the wolves are questioning what had happened, they feel that he is not telling the truth.   To mask this, he had shouted words that have never been spoken in thousands of years, “ I will avenge my brother and cross the clearing, I will not rest until I have the human’s head with me.” With this he ran over the clearing while his men and the wolves had looked on in shock. Both princes are gone and both had broken the concords. It has never happened in a thousand years and no one knew what to do.   All the elders had been woken up and the oldest of them all, a hybrid wolf vampire, Ashmira had uttered the words no one one wanted to hear.   “The blood moon will come up soon, blood will shed, and the brotherhood will be severed. The time has come for vampires and wolves to separate. Betrayal is at the horizon and one will break and bring together. A thousand years will pass and the home we once shared will be broken. The moon goddess will give her wrath to one and blessing to another. A curse will be born.   The elders of the wolves howled for this is not one would want after such a long time of peace. The concords should not have been broken. The legend of the blood moon is coming true.
