The contents of the message had my eyes scanning the room but no one in my visibility held a phone. One thing was clear though, the sender was attending the party.
“ You are obedient.” I read the message over and over again and could not help but wonder what the person was up to. My eyes voluntarily gazed towards Asher's side but he was busy chatting with another alpha.
“ What's the matter? You look pale.” Valen's words pulled me from my little trance.
Putting the phone away, I smiled at him.
“ It's nothing.” I lied with a straight face.
Valen didn't seem to believe me and his eyes momentarily stared at my pouch before looking away.
I could hear people whispering and murmuring as they looked our way.
“ Isn't that beta Valen of Crestwood pack? Is the woman by his side the Alpha?” One person asked.
“ It's most likely. Who would have thought that alpha rivera is a woman.” Another said.
“A female Alpha? What can she do?” Another one sneered with contempt.
Yes, what can a female alpha do? In a society full of chauvinistic men who regard women as weak, being an alpha was bound to be frowned at.
But I was used to this kind of belittlement. Even my pack members thought that Valen was more suitable to be the alpha than me. Well, I proved them wrong. That's a story for another day.
“ Alpha Rivera?” A voice sounded besides me, making me turn around to face the person.
The man before me held two glasses of wine and a smile etched on his face.
“ Alpha Liam.” I returned the greetings before turning around, uninterested.
At that moment, I thanked my Beta for briefing me about everyone who would be attending the party.
“ I must say, the rumours about you are true.” The man said with a chuckle.
“ Oh! So what rumours did alpha Liam hear about me?” I asked with interest.
Alpha Liam just smiled mysteriously before handing me a glass of wine.
“ I hope Alpha Rivera doesn't mind having a toast with me.” Liam proposed. At first, I wanted to turn him down but thinking about the mask and the mysterious message, I accepted the glass only for Valen to try and snatch it from me.
“ Sorry but my Alpha doesn't drink.” Valen said, giving alpha Liam a stern look.
Liam said nothing, just c****d his brows at me.
“ It's okay Valen, I can handle it.” I replied, giving him an assurance smile.
“ Your beta seems very protective of you, Alpha Rivera.” Liam casually commented but I could feel the ambiguity in his words.
“ It's only natural.” I replied, ignoring the meaning behind my words.
Valen excused himself. I watched as he walked away with clenched fists.
“ He likes you.” Alpha Liam whispered loud enough for me to hear. His words made me frown.
“ You are too noisy. It's none of your business.” I shot back, annoyed with his blatant approach.
“ How is that none of my business? I like you and that means your beta is an obstacle for me to chase you.” Alpha Liam said, a teasing smile on his face.
Looking at him, I clicked my tongue.
“ That's not funny.”
Holding the glass of wine I twirled it, the dark red liquid moving around the glass gracefully.
The sound of Alpha Asher calling attention and welcoming everyone to the banquet sounded stopping Liam from saying more.
It turns out that tonight, Asher was formally Introducing Leah, his chosen mate, to the world.
As Leah stood besides him with a stiff smile, I could tell that she was not happy, just faking it. That realisation made me frown.
When Asher kicked me from the pack years ago, the two of them were so much in love.
“ I don't like how pretentious Asher is. I heard that he drove his fated mate to death just to keep his mistress.” Liam commented besides me, his words making my heart clench painfully.
I did not say a word, just stared at Asher as he smiled pleasantly to the other guests before leading his mate to the dance floor.
“ Can I have this dance?” Liam's voice pulled me from my glaring episode.
Looking at his outstretched hand, I looked away.
“ I don't know how to dance.” I said in a low and soft voice.
Raised as an omega, I did not get to attend school.
After leaving midnight pack and becoming the alpha of Crestwood pack, I had a lot to learn not like I was interested in dancing classes either.
Alpha Liam let out a low chuckle, seemingly amused.
“ It's okay, just follow my lead.” He said but I hesitated until Liam gave me a pleading look.
“ Fine, just don't complain when I step on your toes.”
With that, Liam led me to the dance floor.
He directed my hands to rest on his shoulder as he held my waist and we started dancing to the tune.
The beat of the song was slow and before I knew it, we were moving in sync.
“ I'm forced to think that you lied about not knowing how to dance.” Liam whispered into my ears. I could hear his warm breath fanning my neck and his body was almost touching mine. Despite feeling uncomfortable, I did not push him away, just glared at him.
“ I was serious earlier, I really like you.” Liam said, his voice hoarse.
“ I don't think alpha Liam lacks in beauties throwing themselves at him.” It was a blatant refusal.
With his reputation of womanizing, did he think that I could be moved by his words?
“ That's true but none ever attracted me like you did. I can make you my Luna and you would not have to worry about others looking down on you for being a female alpha.” Alpha Liam said.
To others, there was nothing wrong with his words but to me, his words were an insult.
“ Are you looking down on me?” I did not hide the hostility in my words.
“ That's not what I meant.” Liam said, his tone apologetic but I snorted at his words.
“ I hate it when men think that women are nothing but tools to be kept.” I said, pushing him away just in time for the music to come to an end.
I turned around and left the hall in a fit of anger.
Stepping outside, I closed my eyes, letting the cold night breeze fan my face.
“ Alpha Rivera huh? Raven, you have fooled me for five years!” A familiar voice sounded from behind me.
