Chapter 7

The sound of the door creaking open jolted me awake. I lifted my eyes only to momentarily squint them from the harsh light harassing them. It was already morning from the look of things. I can't believe I managed to fall asleep even amidst all the chaos. After my eyes adjusted to the light, I was greeted by a tall frame, standing by the door. His noble aura didn't seem to diminish even as he stood inside a f*****g cell róom. The man before me was the same man who defended me last night when those human vultures almost tore me to pieces. He was none other than Lucas, the Lycan King. Seeing him looking all majestic, I could not help but wonder why he was here. "Sleeping, are we?" he teased, stepping into the room with an infuriatingly casual gait. "Even with your life on the line, you can afford to nap?" I don't Know if he was trying to be sarcastic or just rile me up by reminding me of my situation. I scoffed and rolled my eyes, trying to act nonchalant. "What else is there to do in here?" My voice was cold and distant. I felt empty inside. With witnesses and evidence, I knew there was no way to turn the tables. Those I trusted betrayed me, who could possibly save my ass? I did not hope for any miracle either. There's no such thing as miracles, that I had learned the hard way. Lucas's expression softened slightly, maybe from pity. “ You are giving up just like that? Without a fight?" He àsked ànd I could not help but chuckle, albeit bitterly. “ I don't want to give up, I want to fight but what's there to fight for? My already pathetic life? My mate rejected me and banished me. After five long years, I thought I finally had a life of my own. In the end, It was all a big fat lie. I don't have anything to fight for so why not just accept my fate?" I retorted, holding back my tears not to break down before me. The desperation was eating me up and I didn't Know how long I could hold on acting tough. "I can save you, Raven," he said, his voice low and steady. "But it comes with a condition." I narrowed my eyes at him, suspicion prickling at the back of my mind. "What condition?" With a snap of his finger, a man appeared before handing him what looked like a file. Lucas then walked to me ànd stuffed the papers in my hands. “ Take your time to go through them. If you agree, sign the agreement ànd I'll get you out of this hellhole." As I glanced at the papers, the word “ marriage contract" stood out. I almost threw the papers down as If they were hot potatoes but I held back, composing myself. “ What makes you think I'll agree to this?” I scoffed. " I don't need this.” I said, handing him the papers back. " Are you sure about this? Don't you want to clear your name?" Lucas asked, his gaze piercing into mine as if searching for a spark of hope. "Or are you content with everyone believing you're guilty?" My heart ached at his words. Of course, I wanted to prove my innocence, but what chance did I have? “ Then what follows after clearing my name?" "Kiran might still be alive," Lucas said softly, his words making my heart beat impossibly fast. " Don't you want to find her?” He added. The way he said it, I knew that he was trapping me but I could not resist the glimmer of hope that sparked within me. I stared at him, my resolve wavering. “ You're not lying, are you?" I asked, not sure whether to trust him or not. “ What am I going to gain from deceiving you?" Lucas shot back. "Sign this," he said, holding the papers out to me. "It's a marriage contract. Marry me, and I will ensure your safety and help You prove your innocence. I believe by now you know that someone is intentionally targeting you.” I have to admit that the guy knew how to play his cards. He wasn't wrong either . After last night, I realized that everything that happened to me was part of an elaborate plan. I have no idea what they are plotting but by staying alive ànd with a powerful backer like the Lycan King, it would be easy to uncover the truth. With that resolve in mind, I signed the damn papers. I knew making that decision was going to be the turning point of my life but either way, I confidently signed the papers. “You won't ever regret today's decision." There was a smile on his face as he said the words. Stepping close to me, his cold fingers traced my facial contours. “ I still prefer you with your mask on. I have a thing for unraveling mysteries." Lucas grinned, his hot breath fanning my face. After casting me one last glance, he turned to walk away. “ Why me?" I blurted before I could stop myself. Why did he choose to stand by me? Why did he propose the marriage deal to me? He is well known for his ruthlessness ànd disinterest on women so why chose to marry me? "Because you belong to me, Raven. And I protect what is mine." His words sent a shiver down my spine. There was a possessive edge to his tone, but also a promise of safety and protection. Without another word, he turned around and left. Later that day, I was brought before the Alphas for my trial. What was intended to be an Alphas meeting to find solutions for a plague turned out to be my judgment meeting. I arrived here as an Alpha, now, I was standing before the others like a criminal. Ironical, right? As my eyes scanned the people inside the róom watching me with disgust and distaste, I felt like the walls were closing in, and I could hardly breathe. I listened as my crime was tabled before others ànd evidence provided. I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. What could I say? Just as the sentence was about to be declared, the doors to the chamber burst open. “Trying to cast me aside as you accuse my woman?" His voice, clear ànd commanding filled the room. Murmurs broke inside the chambers, a clear indication that his presence wasn't welcomed. “ With all due respect. This is an Alpha's meeting ànd Lycans are not part of our circle." Alpha Asher hissed. “ I agree with you on that. But the woman you are trying to accuse is my wife." Lucas announced, slapping our marriage agreement on their faces. “ I believe I have the right to be here now?" It was more of a declaration than a question. Upon seeing the document, no one dared say a word. “ Now back to business. With me here is all the evidence you need to clear my wife's name. “ He said, placing a stack of documents before the head Alpha whose expression turned ugly with each passing minute.
