The Broker's Gambit

"Get down!" Clark's voice cracked through the cabin like a whip. Cole's body reacted before his mind caught up, dropping to the floor, his hands covering his head. The window beside him exploded inward, showering him with a rain of glass fragments that stung his exposed skin. The plane lurched violently. The engines screamed, a high-pitched whine that shredded the air. Cole felt the floor tilt beneath him, gravity pulling him sideways. He grabbed the edge of the seat, his fingers digging into the fabric, and held on as the world spun. Another impact. This one came from the nose, a deafening crunch of metal on metal. The cabin lights flickered and died, plunging them into darkness lit only by the pale glow of emergency strips along the floor. Anna was shouting something. Cole couldn't make out the words. The roar of the engines, the shriek of torn metal, the howl of wind rushing through the shattered window—it all blended into a single, overwhelming wall of sound. He crawled forward, his palms pressing against the cold floor, navigating by feel. He found Lily's leg, gripped her ankle, and pulled her toward him. She was conscious, her hands flailing, trying to find purchase. The plane banked hard to the right. Cole's shoulder slammed into a bulkhead. He tasted blood, sharp and metallic, flooding his mouth. Then the engines cut out. The silence was worse than the noise. It was absolute, a vacuum of sound that pressed against his eardrums. The only thing he could hear was his own heartbeat, pounding in his chest, and the faint whistle of wind over the dying airframe. The plane was falling. Cole forced himself to move. He found Lily in the darkness, pulled her close, wrapped his arms around her. He pressed his mouth to her ear. "Hold on. Whatever happens, hold on." She nodded against his cheek. The ground rushed up to meet them. --- The impact was a hammer blow that drove the breath from his lungs. Metal screamed as it tore and crumpled. The world spun, tumbled, and then went still. Cole opened his eyes. The world was gray and fuzzy, the edges of his vision blurred. He blinked, trying to focus. The cabin was tilted at a sharp angle, the ceiling where the floor should have been. Emergency lights flickered weakly, casting long shadows across the wreckage. He tried to move. Something was pinning his legs. He pushed against it, felt it shift, and slid free. His body screamed in protest, every muscle aflame, but he forced himself to his feet. Lily was beside him, her face pale, her eyes open. "Are you hurt?" he asked. "I don't think so." Her voice was shaky, but she was conscious. That was enough. Clark was climbing out of the wreckage, his sleeve torn, blood running down his arm. Anna was already outside, standing in the cold morning light, her phone pressed to her ear. "We need to move," she said. "They'll be coming." Cole didn't ask who. He didn't need to. He helped Lily out of the wreckage, his hands steady despite the trembling in his limbs. The plane had crashed in a clearing, surrounded by trees. The fuselage was twisted, black smoke rising from the engines. "Everyone okay?" Clark asked. "Fine," Anna said. "But we're exposed. We need to get to cover." They moved into the trees, the ground uneven beneath their feet. Cole's legs ached, his shoulder throbbed, but he kept moving. They found a shallow depression behind a fallen log and dropped into it, their breath clouding in the cold air. Anna was still on the phone, her voice low and urgent. She hung up and turned to face them. "Elias Vance," she said. "He's the one who shot us down. He knew we were coming. He was waiting." Cole stared at her. "He knew?" "He knew everything. The plane, the route, the timing. He's been watching us. Using us. Playing us like pieces on a board." Clark's face was hard. "Then how do we stop him?" Anna was quiet for a moment. "We don't. Not directly. He's too well protected. Too connected. But we can cut off his supply lines. Starve him out." "How?" Anna pulled out a small device from her jacket. "I have a contact. Someone who can access the accounts, freeze the assets. But it will take time. And we need to stay alive until it's done." Cole looked at the device, then at Anna. "You trust this person?" She held his gaze. "With my life." --- The hours that followed were a blur. They moved through the forest, staying off the main paths, following Anna's instructions. She navigated by memory, by instinct, never hesitating. They reached a farmhouse at dusk. It was abandoned, its windows boarded, its roof sagging. Anna led them inside, and they collapsed on the dusty floor, exhausted. Cole lay on his back, staring at the ceiling. The pain in his shoulder was a dull throb, a constant companion. He could hear the others breathing, their voices low, their movements careful. He thought about Elias Vance. The man who had shot them down. The man who had been pulling the strings all along. He thought about his father. His mother. The truth that Elias had revealed. The lies that had built his life. He closed his eyes. Sleep claimed him, but it was a shallow, restless thing. --- He was walking through a dark corridor. The walls were close, pressing in on him. He could hear footsteps behind him, soft and deliberate. He tried to run, but his legs wouldn't move. He turned. A figure stood at the end of the corridor, their face hidden in shadow. "You can't escape," the figure said. "You never could." Cole woke with a start. The farmhouse was dark, the only light a faint glow from the cracks in the boarded windows. He sat up. The others were still sleeping. Lily was curled up beside him, her breathing slow and even. Clark was propped against the wall, his eyes closed. Anna was in the corner, her phone in her hand. Cole looked at the ceiling. The shadows were deep, the silence heavy. He thought about his father. His mother. The truth that Elias had revealed. The night pressed in around him. And he felt the weight of everything he had yet to learn.
