The Father's Secrets

Cole stood at the window, watching the first snow of winter fall over the fields. The white flakes drifted down, blanketing the brown earth in a layer of pristine silence. It was beautiful. Peaceful. The kind of scene he had dreamed about during the years of war. But the peace felt fragile. Like a glass ornament that could shatter at any moment. He had been home for six months since The Architect's death. Six months of silence. Six months of normal. Six months of trying to convince himself that the war was truly over. Alexander came downstairs. He was twenty-five now. A man. His father's son. He carried himself with the same quiet confidence, the same watchful eyes. "Dad. You're up early." "Couldn't sleep." "Same dream?" Cole turned. "You know about the dreams?" Alexander nodded. "I have them too. Sometimes. The faces. The screams. The things we did." Cole walked to the table. Sat down. "I thought I was protecting you from all of that." "You did. For a while. But I'm not a child anymore. I need to know what you went through. What we all went through." Cole looked at his son. The boy who had been born of lies. Who had grown into truth. "Are you sure?" "I'm sure." Cole took a breath. Then he told Alexander everything. The Consortium. The Architect. The war. The killing. The choices he had made. Alexander listened without interrupting. When Cole finished, he was silent. "Thank you," Alexander said. "For what?" "For telling me. For trusting me." "You're my son. Of course I trust you." Alexander stood. Walked to the window. "There's something I need to tell you." "What?" "The Architect wasn't the only one. There's someone else. Someone who's been watching. Someone who's been planning." Cole's blood ran cold. "Who?" "A woman. Her name is Helena Vance. She's The Architect's daughter. She's been in hiding for years. But she's coming out. She's been recruiting." "How do you know this?" Alexander reached into his pocket. Pulled out a letter. Cream envelope. No stamp. "She sent this to me. A week ago." Cole took the letter. Opened it. *"Alexander,* *I know who you are. I know what your father did. I know what he took from me. My father. My legacy. My future.* *I'm coming for him. For you. For everyone you love. And I won't stop until everything he built is in ruins.* *You have one chance. Walk away. Leave your family. Leave the country. Disappear. If you do, I'll let you live.* *If you don't, I'll destroy you.* *—Helena Vance"* Cole's hands were shaking. "This is a threat." "Yes." "To you. To our family." "Yes." Cole stood. Walked to the window. "We need to tell the others." "I already did. Clark knows. Eve knows. Mom knows." Cole turned. "Lily?" "I told her this morning. Before you woke up." Cole walked to his son. Put a hand on his shoulder. "We're going to protect you. No matter what." "I know." --- The family gathered in the living room. Clark. Eve. Evelyn. Lily. Alexander. Lauren. Emily. The whole clan. Cole stood in front of them. "We have a new enemy. Helena Vance. The Architect's daughter. She's threatening Alexander. She's threatening all of us." Clark stood. "What's the plan?" "We find her. Before she finds us." "Any idea where she is?" Cole pulled out a folder. "I have a contact. Former CIA. She's been tracking Helena for months. She has a location." "Where?" "A compound. In the mountains of Colorado. Remote. Fortified." "How do we get in?" Cole looked at his brother. "We don't. I do." "No. We do this together." "Clark, I've lost too many people. I'm not losing you." Clark grabbed his arm. "I lost people too. Frankie. Kane. So many others. I'm not losing you." Cole looked at his brother. The man who had tried to kill him. Who had saved him. Who had become his best friend. "Fine. We do this together." --- The plane landed in Denver at 3 PM. The mountains rose in the distance. Snow capped peaks. Dark forests. Cole and Clark drove through the mountains. The roads were narrow. The cliffs were steep. The compound was hidden in a valley. Surrounded by trees. A fence. Guard towers. "There are at least twenty men," Clark said. "Probably more." "Then we take out the perimeter first. Quiet. Then the guards." They moved through the forest. Silent. Stealthy. The first guard never saw them coming. The second. The third. They reached the main building. A large house. Stone. Wood. Lights in the windows. Cole signaled. They moved to the back door. Inside, the house was warm. A fire in the fireplace. Furniture. Art. A woman sat in a chair. She was older. Gray hair. Cold eyes. "Mr. Mathers. I was wondering when you'd come." "Helena. I've been looking for you." "I know." She stood. "I've been looking for you too." "Why?" "Because you killed my father. You destroyed my legacy. You took everything from me." "Your father was a monster. He destroyed thousands of lives." "And I'm going to destroy yours." Cole raised his pistol. "I have you outnumbered." "You have me outgunned. But you don't have me outsmarted." Helena pressed a button on her wrist. The building shook. An explosion. Fire. Smoke. Cole dove for cover. Clark hit the floor. Helena was gone. --- The building was collapsing. Cole and Clark crawled through the smoke. The flames were everywhere. They reached the back door. Burst out into the snow. The forest was burning. The trees were on fire. Helena was standing at the edge of the forest. Watching. "Goodbye, Mr. Mathers." She walked into the flames. Cole ran after her. But the fire was too intense. He stopped. Watched her disappear. Clark grabbed his arm. "We need to go. The fire is spreading." Cole looked at the burning forest. At the woman who had escaped. "This isn't over," he said. "I know. But we need to survive to fight another day." They ran through the snow. The fire raged behind them. --- The drive back to Denver was quiet. Cole stared out the window. The mountains blurred. Clark looked at him. "Are you okay?" "I don't know. She escaped." "She'll come back. They always do." Cole nodded. "I know." --- The plane landed in Virginia at midnight. The farmhouse was dark. Cole walked inside. Lily was waiting on the couch. "Are you okay?" "I'm okay." "Did you find her?" "Yes. But she escaped." Lily hugged him. "We'll get her next time." "I know." --- The next month was a blur. Cole and his team tracked Helena across the country. Colorado. Wyoming. Montana. Everywhere they went, they found traces of her. But never her. She was always one step ahead. On a Tuesday, Cole received a letter. *"Mr. Mathers,* *You've been chasing me for months. And you've failed. Every time.* *I want to offer you a choice. Surrender. Walk away. Leave your family. Disappear. I'll let them live.* *If you don't, I'll kill them. One by one. Starting with your son.* *Choose wisely.* *—Helena Vance"* Cole read the letter three times. His hands were shaking. He walked to the kitchen. Lily was at the stove. "We need to go. Now." "Where?" "Somewhere safe. Somewhere she can't find us." "The farmhouse is safe." "No. She'll find us here. She's watching. Always watching." Lily turned off the stove. "I'll get the others." --- The family gathered in the living room. Cole stood in front of them. "We need to leave. The farmhouse isn't safe. Helena knows where we are." Evelyn stood. "Where will we go?" Cole pulled out a map. "I have a cabin. In the mountains of Vermont. Remote. Hidden. No one knows about it." "How do we get there?" "We fly. Tonight. A private plane. Clark has it arranged." The family packed. They left the farmhouse. The home they had built. The memories they had made. Cole looked back as they drove away. The farmhouse disappeared in the rearview mirror. He would miss it. But he would protect his family. --- The cabin was deep in the woods. Log walls. A stone fireplace. A view of the mountains. Cole stood on the porch. The snow was falling. The world was silent. Lily walked out. "Are you okay?" "I don't know. I've been fighting for so long. I'm tired." She took his hand. "Then rest. We'll watch." "I can't rest. Not while Helena is out there." "Then we'll fight her. Together." Cole looked at her. The woman who had loved him. Who had stayed with him. Who had given him everything. "Thank you," he said. "For what?" "For being here. For never giving up on me." She kissed him. "I'll never give up on you. I promise." --- The next week was quiet. Cole and his family stayed in the cabin. They ate. Talked. Waited. Helena didn't come. On the seventh day, Cole received a text. *"I know where you are. I could come for you. But I'm not. Not yet.* *I want to watch you squirm. I want to see the fear in your eyes. I want to hear you beg.* *And when you do, I'll strike.* *—Helena Vance"* Cole read the text. Then he deleted it. He walked to the window. The snow was falling. The world was white. He would protect his family. No matter the cost.
