The Warehouse

1420 Words
The morning sun was warm on Cole's face. He sat on the porch, coffee in hand, watching the fields turn from brown to green. Spring was here. New life. New beginnings. Two weeks had passed since he returned from Moscow. Two weeks of silence. Two weeks of peace. The Consortium was gone. The enemies were dead or in prison. The war was over. He should have been happy. Instead, he felt empty. Lily came out with a blanket. She draped it over his shoulders. "You're going to catch a cold." "I'm fine." "You're always fine." She sat beside him. "But you're not fine, are you?" He looked at her. The woman he loved. The woman who had seen him at his worst. "I don't know how to stop," he said. "I've been fighting so long, I don't know how to live." She took his hand. "Then you learn. One day at a time. One moment at a time." "I don't know if I can." "You can. I believe in you." He squeezed her hand. "Thank you." She smiled. "Always." --- The next week was quiet. Cole went to work. Taught his classes. Came home. Spent time with his family. Normal life. Beautiful life. But Cole couldn't shake the feeling that something was coming. Something he couldn't see. On Friday, he got a call from Agent Chen. "Cole. I need to tell you something." "What?" "We found another name. In The Architect's files. Someone we missed." Cole's heart stopped. "Who?" "A woman. Her name is Olivia Vance. She's Marcus Vance's daughter. She's been in hiding for years. She's been planning something." "What?" "We don't know. But she's been recruiting. Former Aegis operatives. Disgruntled employees. People who lost everything when the Consortium fell." "How many?" "Dozens. Maybe more. She has money. Her father stashed billions offshore. She has access to all of it." Cole stood. "Where is she?" "That's the problem. No one knows. She's a ghost. But she's been sending messages. Threats. To you. To your family." "What do the messages say?" "That she's coming. That she's going to destroy everything you've built." Cole closed his eyes. The war was back. And this time, it was personal. --- The first message came on Saturday. A text from an unknown number. *"You killed my father. Now I'm going to kill everyone you love. Starting with your girlfriend. —O.V."* Cole showed Lily the text. "We need to leave," she said. "No. We're not running." "Then what are we going to do?" He looked at her. The fear in her eyes. "We're going to fight. Like we've always fought." --- Clark came over that night. Eve was with him. The family gathered in the living room. Cole stood in front of them. "Olivia Vance is coming. She's Marcus's daughter. She's been planning this for years. She has money. Weapons. People." "What's the plan?" Clark asked. "We find her first. Before she finds us." "How?" Cole pulled out a folder. "Agent Chen sent me this. Her last known location was in Switzerland. A villa on Lake Geneva. She's been there for months." "Then we go to Switzerland." "Not we. Me." Clark stood. "No. We're not doing this again. You're not going alone." "The last time I went alone, I lost Frankie. I'm not losing anyone else." "Then don't lose anyone. Let us help." Cole looked at his brother. His family. The people he loved. "Fine. But you do exactly what I say." Clark nodded. "Deal." --- The plane landed in Geneva at 10 AM. The sky was gray. The air was cold. Cole walked through customs with a fake passport. New identity. Clark was behind him. Eve was with them. She had insisted on coming. The villa was on the lake. Stone walls. Iron gates. A long driveway lined with trees. Cole parked a quarter mile away. They walked through the woods. The villa was dark. No lights. No movement. "She's gone," Clark said. "No. She's here. I can feel it." Cole circled the villa. The back door was unlocked. He pushed it open. Stepped inside. The kitchen was empty. The living room was empty. The bedrooms were empty. But there was a letter on the dining room table. Addressed to him. *"Mr. Mathers,* *You're too late. I've already moved on. But don't worry. We'll meet again. Soon. And when we do, I'll make you pay for what you did to my father.* *—O.V."* Cole folded the letter. Put it in his pocket. "She's playing with us," Clark said. "Then we play back." --- The next week was a blur. Cole and his team moved through Europe. Switzerland. France. Germany. Italy. Everywhere they went, they found traces of Olivia. A safe house. A bank account. A former associate. But never her. She was always one step ahead. On Friday, Cole got a call from Agent Chen. "We have a lead. Olivia is in New York. She's been meeting with someone. A man named Derek Vance. Her cousin." "We have a location?" "A warehouse in Brooklyn. She's been there for three days." Cole stood. "We're on our way." --- The warehouse was in Brooklyn. Old. Rusted. Windows boarded. Cole parked across the street. Clark was with him. Eve was in the car. "We go in quiet," Cole said. "No guns. No knives. We talk first." Clark nodded. They walked to the warehouse. The door was unlocked. They pushed it open. Inside, the warehouse was empty. Dust on the floor. Cobwebs on the ceiling. But there was a light in the back. A single bulb. A table. Two chairs. A woman sat at the table. She was young. Mid-twenties. Dark hair. Cold eyes. "Cole Mathers. I was wondering when you'd come." "Olivia. We need to talk." She gestured to a chair. "Sit." Cole sat. Clark stood by the door. "What do you want?" Olivia asked. "I want you to stop. This war has gone on long enough. Your father is dead. The Consortium is gone. There's nothing left to fight for." "There's everything left to fight for. Revenge. Justice. Honor." "Honor has nothing to do with it. You're just like your father. Angry. Bitter. Destroying everything in your path." Olivia stood. Her face was hard. "You don't know anything about me." "I know you're scared. I know you're alone. I know you're trying to fill a void that can never be filled." Olivia's hands were shaking. "You killed my father." "He killed himself. He made his choices." "I don't care about his choices. I care about his death." "Then let it go. Move on. Find a new life." Olivia laughed. It was bitter. "You think I can just move on? You destroyed my family. My legacy. My future." Cole stood. "I offered you a choice. Peace or war. You chose war. Now live with the consequences." He walked to the door. Clark followed. Olivia watched them leave. Her hands were shaking. Her eyes were wet. But she didn't say anything. --- The drive back to the farmhouse was quiet. Cole stared out the window. The trees blurred. Clark looked at him. "Are you okay?" "I don't know. I offered her peace. She refused." "She'll come back. She's too angry to let go." "Then we'll be ready." --- The next month was quiet. Cole went back to teaching. Spent time with Lily. Helped his family. Olivia had disappeared again. But Cole knew she was out there. Watching. Waiting. On a Tuesday, he got a text. *"I've been thinking about what you said. Maybe you're right. Maybe peace is possible. But not here. Not now. I'm going to leave. Start a new life. And I'm never coming back. —O.V."* Cole read the text three times. Then he replied. *"Good luck. I hope you find what you're looking for."* He put down the phone. Walked to the porch. Lily was waiting. "Who was that?" "Olivia. She's leaving. She said she's never coming back." "Do you believe her?" Cole looked at the fields. The sky. The world. "I don't know. But I hope so." She took his hand. "So do I." *Cole sat on the porch. The stars were bright. The night was cold.* *His phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number.* *"She's gone. But the war isn't over. There are always more enemies. Always more battles. Sleep well, Mr. Mathers. —The Architect"* *Cole read the text. Then he deleted it.* *He walked inside. Locked the door.* *The war wasn't over.* *But Cole was ready.*
