When the Whole World is Watching

When Zari opened her eyes, she felt unsettled. A unshakable feeling she couldn’t quite explain. . Like something dark and unseen was lurking in the air, waiting for her to notice. Leila was still beside her, asleep, her arm draped protectively over Zari’s waist. She had fallen asleep while taking the place of Dennis to comfort Zari. Zari should be feeling safe but she was anxious. Her body ached with the remnants of last night’s breakdown, but something else gnawed at her—an unease she couldn’t quite name. Something felt... off. Carefully, she shifted out of Leila’s grip and reached for her phone on the nightstand. She hadn’t checked it since the dinner. The weight of humiliation had been too much to face. Now, though, she had the desperate urge to feel better—to scroll through mindless posts and distract her mind from the horrid events of the previous night. Zari tapped her screen. 237 missed messages. 52 missed calls. Her heart stopped. "What’s going on?" Her mind racing and wondering. The unease she’d felt turned into something sharp and suffocating. Her pulse thundered in her ears as notifications flooded the screen. You okay? Call me, girl! Zari, WTF is happening?! I saw the video. I am so sorry. Ignore them, they don’t know you. Stay strong. Omg, you’re trending?? People are talking about you on Twitter. Trending? Video? With shaking hands, Zari opened her social media. And then she saw it. Her face. Her humiliation. On every platform. A clip—Jason’s voice sneering, the laughter of the crowd ringing in her ears. The words she had spent all night trying to forget, now looping endlessly for the entire world to consume. The caption read: “Would you date a girl like this? LMAOOO.” The video had over three million views. Zari stopped breathing. Her vision blurred, her lungs locked up, her chest felt like it was about to cave in. The comments—God, the comments. She really thought he wanted her? LMAO. She built like a linebacker, of course he dumped her. Damn, I’d rather die than be seen with her. She’s so big she got her own gravity. Somebody call Animal Control. A loud ringing filled her ears. Zari barely felt herself moving—her body numb, her mind distant. Her fingers hovered over her phone screen as more comments flooded in, vicious and unrelenting. She was a joke. A spectacle. The world was laughing at her. “Zari? Leila stirred beside her, mumbling something sleepily before opening her eyes. The moment she saw Zari’s expression, her face hardened. “What’s wrong?” she asked, sitting up. Zari couldn’t speak. She could only turn her phone around, showing Leila the screen. The reaction was instantaneous. Leila snatched the phone from her hands, eyes scanning the comments, her face shifting from confusion to pure, unfiltered rage. “Who the hell recorded this?!” she demanded, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. Zari shook her head wordlessly. “I swear to God, I’m going to kill him,” Leila growled. “Jason and whoever recorded this—” Zari flinched at his name. Leila noticed. She softened immediately, placing the phone down before reaching for her hand. “Zari,” she said gently. “Talk to me.” But she couldn’t. Because what was there to say? That she had spent her whole life trying to escape this exact moment? That no matter how strong she pretended to be, this—this was too much? That she was drowning, and no one could save her? Her breathing grew shallow, her body tightening with panic. The world was too loud, the room was too small, everything was closing in— “Breathe, Zee.” Her breath shuddered. “You’re safe,” Leila murmured. “I’ve got you.” Zari let out a strangled laugh. “Safe?” Her voice cracked. “Leila, the whole world is laughing at me.” Leila’s grip tightened. “Screw the world.” No. We fight back.” Zari stared at her best friend, stunned. Leila’s eyes were dark, fierce. “We don’t let these losers control the narrative,” Leila continued. “We don’t let them define you. They think they can just humiliate you and walk away?” She shook her head, furious. “Nah. We’re flipping the damn script.” Zari’s stomach twisted. “What does that even mean?” she asked. Leila grinned—a wicked, dangerous grin. “I have a plan.” The Strategist Awakens Leila Carter was not just Zari’s best friend, but a social media and brand strategist with an undefeated reputation. The type of woman who could turn anyone’s image into a global movement. Companies paid her ridiculous money to craft their narratives, to shift public perception, to create brands that demanded respect. And right now? She wasn’t working for a company. She was working for Zari. Zari although humiliated, had already become famous whether she liked it or not. Good publicity and bad publicity is still publicity. If they were smart, this difficult situation could become an opportunity for Zari. Leila snapped into action, her entire posture shifting from anger to precision. Leila turned back to Zari, placing her hands on her best friend’s shoulders. "Listen to me, Zee," she said, voice low, commanding. "We control the story now. Not them. You hear me?" Zari stared at her. “Control?” Leila nodded. "They think they can make you a joke? No, babe. We’re flipping the damn script." Leila cracked her knuckles. "Time to ruin Jason’s life." The Plan Leila moved fast, pulling up social media analytics, tracking who had shared the video first, who had amplified it, and most importantly—who was defending Zari. Because there were people fighting for her. And Leila was about to turn that spark into a wildfire. "We’re starting with a statement," Leila announced, typing furiously. "We don’t beg for sympathy. We don’t cry. We own this." Zari frowned. "How?" Leila turned the phone screen toward her, revealing a drafted post. Zari Carter – The Girl Who Refuses to Be Ashamed. "You wanted me to break. You wanted me to disappear. You thought your cruelty would destroy me. But here I am—still standing. And I am not ashamed. I refuse to be." Zari’s throat tightened. "I don’t know if I can—" Leila took her hand. "Zari, listen to me. You have nothing to be ashamed of. Jason does. The people who laughed do. But you? You’re a queen, and it’s time they realized it." "If you don’t want to post it, i won’t," she said softly. "But you’re not alone in this. I’m with you. No matter what." Zari looked at her best friend, feeling blessed and reassured. Not many were privileged to have the kind of friendships she had, and this was very refreshing. She inhaled sharply. Then, with shaking hands, she clicked post.
