Abi and Jet walked against the shadows down a back street ducking behind bushes, trash cans and well anything they could find anytime a car drove past. They came to the opening of an enclosed cul-de-sac they followed the road past the street sign 'Alton Moor' as they came to a row of houses. The two of them found their way to a back yard and climbed into it, over the side fence into the thick bushes and trees of the yard. The two of them almost crawled along the floor until they got to the back wall of the yard. Jet lent on one knee nodded without saying a word. Abi climbed onto his knee, placing her left foot firmly on the thick black denim fabric of his pants and he took her full weight as she stood on his knee. When she was stable she whispered, "okay," as he grabbed both her ankles and with a large feet of strength lifted her up until her hands gripped the top of the wall. Her feet found slits on the bricks work that she had used many times before.
"f**k sis you're getting heavier each time we do this." He whispered as she took her own weight fully on her hands and feet. She pulled herself up and peeked up over the brick wall.
"Or you're getting weaker." She replied under her breath. "We're clear." She said pulling herself up throwing one leg over the wall and the other still hanging back towards her brother. He stepped back slightly and took a jump up to the wall. He was tall, 6 foot 2 so with a good jump he could reach the top of the wall. Abi only being 5 foot 5 it was a much more difficult act. He gripped the top of the wall and placed his feet into the groves of the wall. He pulled himself up, Abi taking his elbows to help take the pressure off his arms as he flung his leg over the wall like she was. They both sighed heavily. "You go first." She said as he nodded, he jumped down and crouched under the bushes in the garden he had landed in. She then jumped after him. They both ran under cover of shadow towards a garden shed in the garden, "you go." She said nodding at the back of the shed. He opened up a thick board in the shed and slipped through it and shut the board behind him. Abi crouched there waiting for a few moments until she heard the familiar knock on the plank.
She pulled the plank open and climbed in too. It was just a regular shed. Inside was gardening equipment and old bikes. Jet was packing his black clothing in the black bag he had on him the whole evening. He pulled a hempen sack from a plant pot at the back of the shed and handed it to her. He placed his black bag in the same plant pot and climbed back out the shed through the boarded entrance. Abi took the clothes from the sack and changed. Both twins wore almost matching white shirts and grey bottoms, Jet in pants and Abi in a skirt. She stuffed her black clothing in her bag and pilled it onto of Jet's followed by the hemp bag. She pulled her long braid out and shook her wavy hair out into its long form. She took her black boots off and hid them with Jet's under the work bench near the lawnmower. She pulled out a pair of grey shoes and put them on her feet before following her brother out the back of the shed. He slid the plank back into place and nodded at her. "Ready?" He said.
"As I will ever be. I think Ira is home tonight as well." Abi replied. Jet rolled his eyes. "She's our sister Jet."
"I know she is and I love her but she's just so..."
"Empty headed?" Abi replied. The two of them started to walk towards the house. He didn't reply but Abi knew that's what he meant. Ira was three years older than them, after seeing her turn 18 and have her switch flipped had made the two of them more determined to not let that happen to them. She had changed so much and they hated it. Ira had got married 6 months previous and had moved in with her new husband. And both Jet and Abi hated Levi he was a doctor and was very much a true Conformist. Even down to the fact his parents could afford another letter when they named him. $10,000 for a forth letter, pointless. Some families saved their whole life to give their kid a forth letter like it really mattered instead of taking the free three letters everyone was entitled to. The two got to the back door and Jet opened it slowly looking into the kitchen closely. He slipped into the kitchen and Abi followed. The two of them crept through the kitchen and into the hallway towards the stairs.
"JET AND ABI MOSS?!" A loud female voice yelled from the living room. The twins stopped dead in their tracks.
"s**t!" They said in unison.
"What was that?" The voice said.
"Nothing." They both said again together as if they shared thoughts. "Twin Thing!" They both said again and started to laugh.
"Here now! Stop messing around." The two of them walked down the stairs and into the living room. In the minimalist living room were four people First stood in the center of the room with a firm face was a small woman no more than 5 foot 2. She had dark brown hair and blinding green eyes that burnt into the twins as they walked into the room. Sat in an armchair was a tall slender man with noticeably messy blonde hair and brown eyes. On the other side of the room was a young woman the same height as the woman in the middle of the room with the same dark hair as her however the same dark eyes as the man in the armchair. Next to her was a man only about an inch or two taller than the lady on his right. He had thick dark hair and also dark eyes, his skin was dark and he had a small pair of glasses perched on his nose. "Where have you two been?"
"I was at the studio." Jet said fast, "Abi was at the lab and we text each other an met on the way home so neither of us had to walk back alone." He was good at lying, he had made it his second talent after his art work.
"Abi?" Their father said, "is that what happened?" Abi on the other hand could not lie, and not her to dad's face.
"Jet text me to say he was done with his painting and we walked home together." She said, most of that was not a lie. Her dad watched her face and nodded.
"Okay, she's not lying to me," he said boldly. "Dia, don't bite their heads off its nearly their 18th birthday they need to be let off the lead a little. There 18 in three days, graduate in 3 months and start their training soon after. Before we know it they'll both be married and having their own families." Jet's eye twitched a small move that only Abi could notice. The thought of getting married and starting training was something he hated the idea of. Too Conformist for him. "Let them be." Their father said. "Now come in and say hello to your sister and brother in law." Abi smiled sweetly and said hello to each of her family members. "Ira has some news."
"What is it?" Jet said shuffling into the room flinging his self onto the couch.
"You are both going to be an aunt and uncle!" Ira said happily. "I'm pregnant."
"That's great." Both the twins said together. "Twin thing!"
"Hay!" Dia Moss said slapping Jet on the side of his shoulder. "You two little miss." Abi hung her head a little as Jet muffled a laugh, he caught her eye and both of them fought to hide back laughter. "Be nice to your sister, your first baby is always a huge deal."
"Even when your second pregnancy gives you twins." Jet said, "first is still a huge deal."
"Jet Moss last time." This time it was their father that caught his attitude problem and cut him off. "I am sorry about him Levi."
"He's a seventeen year old boy its normal behavior." Levi said kindly with his voice but not with his eyes. It was clear to the twins that he really disliked them both powerfully. "But only three days until the big day! Excited?"
"Can't put it into words honestly Levi." Abi said looking at Jet. He nodded in reply. "We have asked for nothing special we want to celebrate it with each other more than friends. Came in together, celebrate together." Jet nodded quickly and stood up.
"I need to go to bed." He said looking at the clock on the wall. "Ira I am happy that you're happy and that's what matters baby or not and if this baby will make you happy then I am. If you'll excuse me I am exhausted." He walked out the room quickly.
"Excuse me." Abi said standing. "Great to see you Ira, Levi and I can wait to hear about the pregnancy and meet the baby when it arrives." She said smiling and running out after Jet. She followed him up the stairs and into his room without knocking. He had pulled his white shirt off and thrown it violently against the wall. He had spent ever spare moment working out as well as painting and Abi could tell it was starting to take effect on his body.
He didn't have to know she had followed him to know he was there. "I hate it!" He said knowing she was behind him. "Pregnant." He said throwing a paintbrush at the mirror on the back of the door as she closed it. "We have to get out of here Ab's. We need to! We have one last chance we have to make it worth it. Her being pregnant means we are going to be pushed to conform more. Marriage, training, kids, house and career. No say in our future. How? What can we do to make a bigger statement?" He sat on his bed with his head in his hands. "I can't be like them Abi I..." He was nearly in tears. Jet didn't cry in front of anyone, but Abi.
"You work on the art make it stand out J okay?" He nodded, "I will do what I can to get us seen."
"What?" He said looking at her slipping some gum in his mouth.
"I'm going to hack the radio waves." She said sitting down with him.
"What with that do?"
"We'll find where The Few are running around, we'll plant your image there...if we know where they are we can make sure they see." He looked up at her.
"Talk about dangerous. If you get caught its jail..."
"Rather be dead that a Conformist right?" He smiled and took her hand. "We'll get out of here. I promise!"
