Chris’ eyes widened. “What? What nonsense are you spilling from your mouth?”
Jessica snorted a laugh. “You might be an Armani but Mr Michael Knowles is Chris’ dad and who do you think he will listen to? A stranger or his own son?”
“We'll have to find out, won't we?” Romeo's brow arched. His lips curved into a taunting smirk as he led Cara away from Chris and Jessica. “Let's leave them alone, Carina.”
Cara nodded and followed him into the car like a child being led by her father.
Jessica's hand formed into a tight grip, her nails digging into her palm as anger swallowed her entire body. “My love,” she tried to keep her voice calm even though she had lost her grip on coolness on the inside. “Your dad will definitely do as you say, right?” Her thin brow twitched skyward.
Chris paced about with uncertainty causing his heart to race. “He will! I mean he has to, I am his son after all.”
Jessica gripped his hands suddenly and stared into his eyes. “My love, you have to make sure he listens to you okay? A single penny from your family must not fall into the hands Cara, she is really evil. I have lots of her secrets in my hands, I just couldn't find the confidence to tell you. You have to make her suffer okay? Promise me!”
“I promise, baby. I will cut down her tree before it even thinks of bearing fruits. Don't worry.”
Jessica smiled at him and led him into the house. “Come on, let's call your dad right now!”
Meanwhile, Inside the car, Cara had remained quiet for a time. She was trying to figure out her thoughts and identify the pieces she was holding until she finally decided to speak up.
“Thank you for… back there.” She broke the deafening silence. “You saved my ass out there and I am truly grateful.”
Romeo's lips curved into a soft smile, his dimples penetrating his cheeks. “I did what I had to do. I should actually be apologizing to you. I know you asked me to keep quiet all through but I had to say something then and I said more than a few words even so I'm sorry.”
“Oh no, that's… nonsense.” She admitted with a slight chuckle as she waved his apology away. “I shouldn't have asked you to keep quiet in the first place. If you had listened to me and kept quiet, I could have been roasted more than a pig at a feast.”
Romeo broke out in a chuckle which she chorused. Silence led them once more before Cara asked.
“How will you get Mr Michael Knowles to support me? He is not someone that can be bought over with a few sugar coated words, you know.”
Romeo smiled softly. “I already know that. In fact, I know the man well and I am two hundred percent sure he will do as I say.”
“Why are you so sure?” Her thin brow arched.
“Let's just say… I have my ways with people like him.” He turned to look at her and a smirk curved his lips.
She felt her heart skip a beat, the butterfly in her stomach fluttering in what seemed to be the most awkward situation in the world.
She was still married to Chris even though divorce had been proposed and she was not looking forward to another relationship just yet.
But Romeo had a way with his smiles, it would seem it was almost impossible to not feel the way she was feeling whenever he smiled.
She cleared her throat and looked at the road ahead. “Okay, I will trust you and go along with you to visit Mr Michael Knowles.”
“I won't let you down Carina, I promise.” There was something in his voice that made anyone believe him.
Even Cara found herself trusting him more than she had intended to be. From the way he spoke, he said he wouldn't let her down and that was exactly what he would avoid doing as long as he was by her side.
She swallowed, pushing down the ball of fear that formed in her chest. She couldn't stop herself from thinking about how much of a fool she– they would look like if they got turned down by the man.
Hopefully, it would never get to that.
