Rose
We never got home, we clearly never did.
The best day of my life turned into the worst day filled with pain and misery.
The drive home was silence and I couldn't take my eyes off Cassandra sitting at the back and from my observation it's clear in her eyes she likes my husband or is she blind to the diamond ring sitting on my forth finger.
My darling husband thinks it's fit for his darling team doctor to sit at the passenger seat while I stay at the back.
I fought for that, I really did but my husband thinks it's not a big deal since his team doctor claims she have allergy sitting at the back seat.
My favourite jazz music was playing and it felt like therapy as I nodded to every beat watching as the city passed from the window but it was turned off and classical played instead.
“Why would you change the music?”
“Because I don't like it,” Cassandra responded.
“And who cares about what you like? Turn that back”
The nerves of her, my blood boils, taking a deep breath to calm myself.
“Rose come on, you are overreacting. This is just music nothing more”
My husband thinks I'm overreacting.
She joins us claims the front seat and now turns my favorite music into hers and my husband thinks I'm overreacting.
My hand moved in a sudden rigid wooden stiffness reaching for the radio set to change the music.
There is a struggle, there is an argument before the biggest hit that changed everything.
I'm turning over, smoke is coming out of the car, there is a tiny sound.
I'm breath but scared out of my heart when I see red dripping down from my arm, there is a voice. I recognize that.
My husband voice, he is calling someone.
But it's not me, my movement is restricted even when I try to move my legs it feels heavy like it's trapped somewhere.
I don't feel any pain yet. I just feel I need to get out of here. I tilt my head sideways. I could see my husband.
He is out of the car, he looks clearly like nothing happened to him and he is trying to open the passenger seat and calling Cassandra's name who is bent slightly.
I'm not sure if she's alive or dead.
But what about me, why is he not coming for me? I try to say something but it's more like a whisper like I could only hear myself.
I'm terrified. My life just flashed right Infront of me few seconds ago.
I thought I was going to die because it suddenly became dark.
Darkness.
Whispers.
I'm being lifted.
“Please hold her legs”
A slight hope bubbles in me when I heard a voice but disappointed when it's wasn't my husband voice.
He went for his darling team doctor instead of me.
I woke up facing the ceiling.
I'm not actually dead. The monitors were blinking. I turned to the side expecting to see my husband, his broad smile that I'm finally awake but he wasn't there. I saw a nurse who smiled at me then the memories kicked in and suddenly I remembered I'm pregnant.
“Please, my baby. Check if my baby is okay” I panicked.
“Calm down, I will get the doctor,” she said before walking away.
My patience is running out. I should find him probably he went out or something. I need to tell him we are having a baby, I need him to know.
I disconnected the drip and walked out of my ward searching for my husband.
“I heard Jack Maddox and Star hockey are in this hospital. Just see the way he takes care of his wife” I heard two nurses whisper among themselves walking pass me after the came out from one of the ward.
I moved forward in a swift motion. My fingers trembles midway trying to get the door open.
“You're going to be alright” my husband's voice. He is talking to someone but who and when I heard her voice my knees buckled.
I peeped through the small opening, Cassandra is sitting on the bed with a plaster by the side of her face, she looks fine to me and my husband is standing right Infront of her giving her all the moral support. The sight broke everything I have held together.
But why?
Does he prefer her over me now?
“There you are. I have been searching for you” a voice behind me, the nurse from earlier beside her is a man on white coat which I recognize to be the doctor.
“Come on let the doctor check your baby”
The thought to confront him, to slap him across the face, to question him why he wasn't by my side but is bigger to find out the situation of my baby so I walked away back to my ward.
“You're sound and the baby is fine. You need to get some rest. Your vitals are good but for us to be on the safe side I recommend you take enough rest”
A relief wash over me. I didn't loose my baby.
“I want to rest at home”
“No this is not a good time. We have to observe you for few days before we can discharge you” but that didn't seat pretty well with me.
I nod just to get them off and the moment the doctor and nurse leaves I'm standing on my feet and I'm heading to that ward where I saw my husband with questions heavy in my chest but I didn't meet him, I met her.
The she-devil.
Cassandra.
The reason why everything went anticlockwise. She clearly had minor injuries while I was in hospital clothes and yet my husband cared more about her than me.
“Rose Maddox, isn't it obvious your husband care more about me than you”
I tried to ignore her with every nerve in me. Clearly she has the agenda to rip me and my husband apart but I wasn't going to allow that. She doesn't know how much of a thick skin I got.
I wasn't going to allow her to pull the family I have built so much into the mud.
“Get out of my way” I clearly wasn't in the mood to trade words with her and she wasn't the one I'm looking for.
“It just a matter of time, your husband will all be mine and you he's going to see the true color of who you are”
I didn't want to listen and I wasn't going allow whatever she have to say break me”
And the next thing she did took me by surprise. She held me by my shoulder then pushed herself to the floor and began to cry. The water bottle on my hand fell off and I heard Jack voice call after her.
“Cassandra” I never knew he was close and the moment he ran past his shoulder quack me and I slipped and fell to the ground.
Oh God!
My baby.
