Chapter 3

1550 Words
Rose “Jack” I called but my voice came out more like a whisper. I'm on the floor something is trailing down my thighs and I feared it's what it is going to turn out to be. My husband doesn't even look at me not even a glance. I wince in pain. He is tending to his darling doctor who claims I pushed her. It felt like I don’t exist in his world, my head is spinning. “Are you okay?” he asked Cassandra who whimpered. “I was trying to tell your wife I am sorry about the accident but she pushed me. I don't think I can stand anymore” How could someone be this cunning and Jack was buying it. He was believing her over me, then came a sharp pain that exploded Inside me like a hurricane. “Jack” A metallic smell exploded through my nostrils. “Please call the doctor” I yelled to anyone who could hear me. Voice screaming for doctor but I'm damn sure it's not my husband. Footsteps rushing towards me, hands grips me. I'm lifted off the floor. “My baby” I screamed, clutched to my stomach as hot tears trailed down my cheek. “My baby… my baby… my baby” hot tears floods down my cheek. The pain is too much, too much for me to take, then I passed out. When I opened my eyes next Jack is by my side with the doctor. My heart skips when I see his face. My anticipation. The hesitation. The voice that keeps reminding me I have lost my child. I shut it out. I tried. The people around me are holding me together, my husband is so close. Why is he here? I thought he doesn't care. His finger on me feels like I have been touched with poison. The silence that fell. Cold and haunting. I knew something have changed even before I was told but I don't want to admit it. “Doctor, how is my baby?” I tried to sit up, notwithstanding the pain I felt on my lower back. He shook his head, that alone meant something and before he could say anything tears trailed down my cheek. “I'm sorry Mrs Maddox, you lost the baby” For a moment I’m numb, a cold chill ran down my spine. My thoughts turn out to be true. I couldn't scream, I couldn't speak but to sob in silence. I'm broken. “Rose why didn't you tell me you were pregnant” my husband chose to ask me such question at this moment. “Or are you hiding something?” “Is the child….” “STOP IT.. STOP IT” Not now, not right here are these questions coming. How do I tell him I was supposed to let him know yesterday before the accident then his next words bruised my heart even more. “Or was he your lover's Baby” my brows creased. My lover! What does he mean? It all too much for me to process, the lost of my baby and now my husband thinking I'm cheating on him. I don't even defend myself. What will I say? How do I say it? He thinks I'm carrying another man's child. But it doesn't matter what I think because everything changed when Cassandra walked in. “That's her lover” Cassandra is showing my husband a picture from her phone. I don't even struggle to take a look. I don't. I know whatever she's is saying is all fabricated. Cassandra made it her mission in life to ruin my marriage and she gradually going to achieve that. “How could you stood so low?” The anger in his voice can't be compared to the pain I feel losing my baby. He expected an explanation but I don't give him any. I don't Instead I laid down on the bed and turn myself away from the both of them without any arguments because I was tired of arguing. Argument have cost me the life of my child. ….. It took me so long, so long to recover. Silence have become my friend and tears my comforter by night. Nothing really makes sense to me. Not life itself. Nothing. While at that Cassandra flooding our home while I turned blind eyes to the both of them, I couldn't help getting so bitter each day I hear the both of them giggles, the days I hear them laugh, the days the went out together to the gym. I wasn't a good wife anymore, I literally did nothing for my husband except to exit in his space. I don't cook for him neither do I speak to him then the thought of leaving crossed my mind. Why punish myself? The man I abandoned my family, my career and everything I held dearly to my heart is the same man I now hate so much. So much. My husband never showed any sign of empathy, he never comforted me for once it felt like I'm the only one mourning my baby. He moved out of our bedroom with the excuse of he wants to give me some space and I let him. Each day felt like a punishment like. I don't feel excitement on things I easily do. I'm done with this. I'm done. It took me a great effort to make that decision. I contacted my lawyer who drafted out a divorce paper. I packed up my stuff and quickly called my brother. “You're right, this marriage has been the worst mistake I have ever made. Please come pick me up” I dragged my box outside to get to the sitting room where I found my mother in-law. “Come make us breakfast” she ordered and I scoffed. She hasn't seen me in two weeks and the moment I walked out of the door she thinks I'm good enough to make breakfast for her. “I’m sure you aren't blind, didn't you see my suitcase. I'm leaving” “You little brat, you don't speak to me in such a manner” “And what if I do, what are you going to do about it” I was pushing her to her limit. I have never been this arrogant to my mother in-law but I guess it was worthless caring for someone who doesn't even want your existence. She lifted her hand to slap me but I was fast enough to get hold of her hand and slap her instead. Her eyes wideneds. Just then Jack walked in with of course his mistress Cassandra laughing at what I don't even know. “Jack your wife just slapped me” Mrs Margaret reports to her son. “Why would you do that Rose” I didn't give him an answer instead I placed the divorce papers on his chest. He picked up the paper. “What is this?” He quickly glanced through it. “Divorce paper, Rose why would you divorce me” Does he need an answer to that question? I'm giving him freedom. Freedom to be with his lover Cassandra. He should be the happiest man on earth. “Rose come on, you don't have to divorce your husband because of me.” Cassandra says acting all innocent. I almost burst out laughing. Wasn't it her mission to destroy my marriage? And there she have it. Congratulations. “Come on Cassandra, you're even better off than her. She's nothing but a housewife but you have shown your resilience towards my son by standing by him throughout his coma. You deserve to be his wife” “Rose” Jack calls. “You know you have nowhere to go if I sign this. I will give you time to think through this if its what you really want” “There is nothing to think of Jack. There is nothing left of me here. You weren't worried when I lost my child and all of a sudden you're worried about my well being. My mind is made up. I'm leaving you for good” “You shouldn't be begging her son, let her leave. You have Cassandra who stood by you throughout your coma not some gold diggers” Lies but I don't address that because there is no need to. “You deserve someone better, someone who is going to take your career to the next level. You deserve Cassandra” Cassandra full of smiles, I knew she couldn't contain her joy. Jack stared at me one last time before pinning down his signature. “You will never get a cent from us,” his mother reminds me. “I don't need your money” “Mother please” Jack pushed his mother aside and handed me a check. “This would be enough for you to start up something. I don't want you going back to the street or going back to your work as a janitor. Please accept it, this is the least I could do” I took the check from him and tore it into shreds, throwing the paper in the air. “I don't need your damn money”
