The week went by so slowly. I left my father's house on Monday when I woke up and luckily Lucas was already gone. I thought that nothing worse could happen to me, but I was far from it. My bastard boss fired me after supposedly calling me repeatedly with no news. He said he was sorry about my parents but unfortunately, he hired a new waitress. I still can't believe it; I never missed a single day and now I'm unemployed. I stayed three days in my little studio with nothing to do but cry.
I printed out my resume on Thursday and started handing it out in the coffee shops near the university, but it's already Sunday and nobody has called me yet. I really don't know what I'm going to do if I don't find a job soon. It's already 10 o'clock and Alisson knocks on the door of my apartment. She came back from her trip last night.
She throws herself at me as soon as I open the door
- I'm really sorry about your parents," she sobs. "I wasn't even there for you when you needed me.
A tear rolls down my cheek.
- Don't worry sweetie, you couldn't have known. Come on," I say, pulling her onto my bed.
I try to console her as best I can
- It is me who should have comforted you and not the opposite", she says to me after having calmed down a little
I give her a little smile. I've known her for several years and if there's anything I know, it's that she's very emotional, even though at first glance it doesn't seem like it.
- What happened?" she asks me after a while.
I understand that she is asking for the cause of death
- A car accident, a drunk driver. They died on the spot", I say mechanically.
- I'm really sorry, sweetie, it must have been difficult to identify them".
- I didn't identify them. I think Lucas did it.
- "What?" she yells before I can finish my sentence. "Did he come back?"
- Sarah is his mother," I remind her gently.
She has a lot of questions that she is holding back from asking me. She knows my story with him. I told her not long ago after drinking too much alcohol.
- Nothing happened," I lie.
She doesn't seem convinced
- He helped me on the day of the funeral," I add.
- Okay", she says a little hesitantly. "This time you are not alone, I am here, okay?
- I know", I say with a little smile.
- What are you going to do now?
- The reading of the will will take place tomorrow. After that we won't have any connection, I'll pay my debts and start thinking about what I'm going to do with my life.
- That's a good idea," she says with a small smile. "You are so strong; I admire you a lot. Now go get ready, we're going out", she says with a wide smile.
- "No, I'm really exhausted, and you need to rest too. I have to look for a job, clean up this mess and...", I start to say
- We're going out," she cuts me off.
To end the discussion, she puts on music so loud that I'm sure I'll get a complaint from my neighbor.
An hour later we leave my apart. We spend the whole day at the mall. We have a good time together even if I don't buy much to save money. We eat and decide to go home. On the road, Allison had the great idea to go to a night club and as always, she forces me to go with her. So, several hours later, I find myself in the middle of the club where we used to come. There is a good vibe, but my heart is not in it. We leave at 2am, I internally curse myself. I am so exhausted that I go to bed with the dress I had put on.
Knocks at my door wake me up the next day. I have a terrible headache and I don't know who is knocking on my door so early. I open the door and see Lucas looking at me from head to toe with a clenched jaw. s**t, I forgot to set an alarm clock. He comes in without me even allowing him to. I close the door behind me.
- You've got 30 minutes to get ready unless you've decided to show up for the reading of your father's testament, dressed like a w***e," he says.
I ignore him, head to my closet and grab the first pair of jeans I can find and a polo shirt, then take everything back to my bathroom which I lock. I take a quick bath and get dressed quickly. When I get out of my shower, it's no surprise that I find him on my phone
- What are you doing on my phone?", I ask him, trying to control my anger
- Don't worry princess, I haven't looked at any of your pictures", he says with a mocking smile
I snatch the phone from him and take my bag. He takes his time to get up from my bed. I wait for him to get out of my apartment to close up behind him and then I follow him to his car which is not parked very far. I am not a car expert, but I know that this one is more expensive than my medical school tuition was.
I open the passenger door, get in the car, and put on my seatbelt while praying that the trip is short.
