Chapter 6.

Days seamlessly bled into weeks, and weeks slowly merged into a month. Within the formidable stone walls of the Iron Citadel, Lara was no longer restricted to her guest quarters. She moved freely through the grand arched corridors and sunlit courtyards, yet true freedom remained frustratingly out of reach. Everywhere she went, quiet hushed conversations followed in her wake. Servants abruptly lowered their voices as she passed, their wary eyes tracking her every move. She caught the recurring, sharp word on their lips: mate. To the members of the Grivendel PAC, she was an impossibility—a fragile human girl who had somehow captured the attention of their formidable Alpha King. Though no one dared challenge or disrespect her openly, the heavy atmosphere of judgment hung in the air like a cold, suffocating winter fog that made every breath feel heavy. On a quiet, frost-draped afternoon, Lara wandered down the polished marble corridor of the citadel's eastern wing. Her gaze drifted toward the grand arched windows that overlooked the perimeter. Beyond the iron-trimmed glass lay the Whispering Pines—dense, snow-laden, and untamed. A quiet temptation nudged at her chest, pulling her toward the heavy outer oak doors. She longed to step outside, to feel the bite of the mountain wind against her skin and walk among the tall trees without a trail of armored royal guards following her every footstep. But as she raised her hand toward the iron latch, Damian’s stern warning echoed sharply in her mind: Do not step beyond my sight without my permission. It's too dangerous out there. She remembered the last time she had strayed from her assigned path. Driven by an overwhelming need for answers about her situation, she had slipped past the patrols and into the palace’s hidden archives to search through ancient, dust-covered texts. When Damian finally located her tucked away in the shadows of the library, he hadn’t raged or threatened her as she had braced herself for. Instead, the raw, breathless panic etched across his hard features had startled her to her very core. The sight of the ruthless Alpha King looking so genuinely shaken at the thought of her missing had sent her heart hammering against her ribs—a strange, fluttering rhythm that she still hadn't fully processed. "Lara." The deep, resonant voice called from behind her, breaking her reverie. Lara turned instantly, sweeping the heavy folds of her midnight-blue gown aside as she dropped into a graceful bow, lowering one knee toward the polished stone floor in deference to the sovereign. "Your Majesty." Damian looked down at her, a faint, rare smile softening the rigid lines of his sculpted jaw. He seemed pleased by how comfortably she now moved in his presence, devoid of the paralyzing terror that usually gripped humans whenever an Alpha walked into the room. He reached out, his broad, calloused fingers gently wrapping around her hand to lift her back to her feet. At the contact of his warm skin against hers, Lara’s heart flinched— electric spark running straight up her arm leaving her skin tingling in its wake. "I have something for you," Damian said softly, his voice dropping an octave as his thumb brushed over the back of her knuckles before he released her. He reached into the inner pocket of his dark leather coat and produced a crisp parchment scroll sealed with thick red wax. "It came from Maya." Lara’s breath hitched in her throat. The surrounding corridor, the cold stone walls, and the distant murmur of guards seemed to stand completely still. The sheer wave of overwhelming joy that washed over her was so sudden that for a fraction of a second, her natural defenses shattered completely, and her instinct was to throw her arms around the King’s neck. Her hands paused mid-air. She froze, her bright blue eyes wide with raw, unshielded emotion as she stared up into his dark, penetrating gaze. Damian met her look, his own heart missing a rhythm, thumping with a sudden, uncharacteristic speed that echoed sharply within his chest. Clearing his throat slightly to regain his royal composure, he spoke in a measured, surprisingly gentle tone. "Aron brought it to me in the early hours of the morning. Won't you open it?" Lara pulled the scroll tight against her chest, her fingers clutching the parchment as if it were the single most precious treasure in existence, her eyes never leaving his face in the private chamber. With trembling fingers, she finally broke the wax seal and unrolled the delicate parchment. Her eyes skimmed her sister's familiar, hurried handwriting: Dearest Sister, I miss you so much. The medicine worked! I am completely healed now and running freely through the fields again. I miss you more than words can say. When will you come home? The guards who came with the royal healer told me that you are doing well where you are, but I still want to see you with my own eyes. P.S. Please come home soon. I love you. Tears flooded Lara’s eyes, blurring the dark ink on the page. She pressed the letter tightly against her lips, swallowing back a soft, trembling sob. "I love you too, baby sister," she whispered into the quiet air, using the back of her sleeve to wipe at her wet cheeks. A soft movement beside her made her look up. Damian was standing right next to her, holding out a pristine white silk handkerchief with a quiet, patient gesture. "She sounds like a sweet girl," Damian offered softly, his tone laced with a profound warmth that he rarely, if ever, revealed to the members of his court. Overcome by a sudden, surging tide of profound gratitude, Lara didn't think or calculate her movements. She stood up on her tiptoes, wrapped her arms tightly around his broad shoulders, and buried her face against his chest. "Thank you," she sobbed softly into the fine fabric of his tunic, holding onto him tightly. "Thank you for saving her." Damian completely froze, his posture stiffening for a fraction of a second as her body pressed against his. Then, a quiet, monumental shift occurred deep within his chest—a feeling entirely foreign to his centuries-old instincts. It wasn't the burden of duty, nor pity, nor royal authority. It was a profound, fierce protection and overwhelming tenderness that completely shattered his carefully guarded composure. Slowly, his large arms wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. Slowly, Lara pulled back, her cheeks flushing warm as she realized what she had done. Her breath caught as Damian reached up, his large, warm fingers gently brushing away a stray strand of brown hair that had fallen across her eye, tucking it behind her ear. His hand lingered against her jawline, his thumb stroking her soft skin. He leaned down, his dark eyes searching hers for a fraction of a suspended second, before his lips gently met hers in a quiet, tender kiss.
