Chapter 4

1155 Words
Lara raised her chin, her posture stiff and anxious as she waited to hear what the Alpha wanted to say. Fear thrummed like a trapped bird in her ribcage, every instinct honed over years of survival screaming at her to run. Yet the heavy, suffocating silence of the royal bedchamber held her pinned to the spot. King Damian stood straight, folding his arms across his broad chest with an effortless, terrifying grace. His towering frame blocked out the pale morning light filtering through the stained-glass windows, swallowing her in his shadow. "I want to hear only the truth," Damian said, his deep voice rumbling low, laced with a coldness that sent a shiver straight down her spine. He raised an eyebrow, his gold-amber eyes tracking the chaotic rise and fall of her chest, reading every slight tremor in her hands. "Don't lie to me. What brings a human girl to the woods all alone, wandering without direction?" Lara’s mind panicked. Panic clawed at her throat as she scrambled for a lie—anything to protect herself. But as she opened her mouth, a sudden, searing heat thrummed violently beneath her skin. An alien pulse echoed in her chest, heavy and unnatural, violently yanking her gaze back into his. "You can't lie to me," Damian interrupted, his tone chillingly calm, possessive, cutting straight through her chaotic thoughts. "My blood runs through your veins now. There is a connection between us." Lara bit her lower lip so hard the sharp taste of copper burst on her tongue. The words sent a wave of horror through her. His blood? Inside her? She felt a strange, terrifying warmth humming along her nerve endings, a phantom thread tying her to the giant standing before her. A hundred desperate questions clawed at her throat, but she swallowed them down. Growing up alone with no relatives except her little sister, Maya, had taught her a painful truth: some secret doors were better left closed if you wanted to survive the night. "I came to trade a life for a life," Lara finally whispered, her voice tight with raw desperation. She couldn't bear the intensity of his golden gaze a second longer, turning her eyes to the arched window. The snowy pine forests outside looked vast and uncaring, mirroring the void in her chest. "I came to save the life of my little sister." Damian didn't cut her off. The heavy air between them stilled as he listened, his amber eyes unblinking, dark with an unreadable weight. "I went searching for the moon ritual," Lara continued, a sudden fracture breaking her voice before she forced her jaw shut and tried again. "For days... I wandered through the freezing woods. I gave border guards everything I owned—every copper coin, my mother's silver ring, every scrap of dried food—just to guide me to the shrine. But they lied. The moment darkness fell, they took my life's savings and abandoned me in the deep forest." She swallowed around a painful lump in her throat, the suffocating terror of that dark, freezing night crashing back over her in waves. "Rogue wolves hunted me down shortly after. They dragged me through the snow like game before your guards stepped in," she confessed, her eyes snapping back to his, burning with fierce, tragic resolve. "I grew up hearing stories of the moon stone's power to heal any sickness, no matter how fatal, if taken on a full moon. But the stories said it demanded a sacrifice. I came to trade my breath for Maya's." A thick, aching silence filled the room. Damian didn't move, but a subtle tremor rippled through his chest. Deep beneath his icy armor, something shifted. Amazement, sharp and agonizing, pierced his heart—followed by a bitter, overwhelming ache of pity. A frail, defenseless mortal girl had marched into the jaws of monster territory, terrified yet unyielding, ready to let her life bleed out just to spare a child. When he finally spoke, the harsh edge in his voice had melted into something surprisingly quiet, almost heavy. "You were deceived, human. I destroyed that shrine years ago. Humans are being lied to that the moon ritual could heal their loved ones, deceiving them to take their belongings. I destroyed it once and for all. The last time it happened was about fifteen years ago." Lara’s world shattered. The air was violently punched from her lungs. "No..." she choked out, the word barely a breath. The opulent room tilted dangerously around her. Hot, frantic tears flooded her eyes, threatening to overflow. She bit her trembling lip until it bled, fighting with every ounce of pride she had not to sob in front of this terrifying king. But the crushing, sickening realization hit her like a physical blow: she had bled for nothing. Maya was dying in a dark, drafty room, and Lara had failed her. "But I can help you heal your sister," Damian added softly, stepping closer. The dark intensity in his gaze locked onto her tear-stained face. Lara blinked, her heart giving a violent, desperate leap. She looked up at him, tears burning down the side of her eyes, but she fought to suppress them. Fighting not to let them out. "You... can?" "My royal blood magic drew you back from the brink of death overnight," Damian said, his tone steady, offering an undeniable lifeline. "Sending my royal healers with pure blood elixirs to your home will cure her illness." A sudden surge of overwhelming relief flooded her veins, so powerful it made her lightheaded. But life had taught Lara that safety always came with a hidden price—especially from an Alpha King. "But in return, you'll have to do something for me," Damian declared, stepping so close his shadow completely swallowed her. His overwhelming scent of winter pine and rain wrapped around her, suffocating and warm. "You'll have to stay here for a period of four months." Lara’s chest tightened, a pulse of suspicion and confusion cutting through her relief. Four months? Why four months? She searched his stony, unyielding features, terrified of what an Alpha King could possibly want with a helpless mortal girl for four long months. But his face was a wall of absolute granite. "Those are my terms," Damian said, his voice ringing with absolute, inescapable authority. "Your sister lives. In exchange, your freedom belongs to me for four months." Lara looked up into those glowing golden eyes. She felt small, fragile, and utterly cornered—yet a quiet fire burned in her blood. She had no power, no weapons, and no other hope in this world. Four months in a golden cage was a nightmare, but for Maya’s life, she would walk into hell itself. "Deal," Lara whispered.
