Chapter 9

Hunter’s POV: Nothing can prepare you for the moments you feel after killing someone. But, even worse than that is having to face the loved ones of someone you have killed. I don’t wish this feeling on anyone. Alyson looks me dead in the eyes and I can see the fire in the pupils of her eyes. A chill runs down my spin as I think about the last time we met. The true reason my eyes are blue instead of yellow. Her boyfriend was attacking Justin, over and over with no sign of letting up. I couldn’t let anything bad happen to him, after all he is my best friend. After getting the person off of me that was trying to kill me, I managed to dodge all attempts to get me and reached Justin in time. The man had his hand inside of Justin’s chest and was no doubtably about to rip his heart out. I made a split second decision and ripped the guy's heart out before he even knew what hit him. I watched as his body began to dedicate in front of me, the heart still beating slowly until it was nothing but a vessel in my hand. I had never taken a life before that day, and I don’t want to do that ever again unless I have to. I killed a vampire last time Svetlana sent them to get Emily and I still regret that kill too. But, at least he doesn’t have someone that has come after me since then. I have saved many lives before that, and still continue to save them. But, nothing can erase the feeling that I had when I realized what I had done. That was the first day that I felt like the monster that all of the humans think we are. Alyson doesn’t give it a second thought before she kicks me so hard in the gut that I almost throw up what little food I have left in it from yesterday. I growl as I stand up, ready for the next blow. I don’t even get the chance to fully stand up before she throws Justin into me. “You killed Seth.” She shouts at me as she continues her assault. She runs at me but I dodge her. “You have killed thousands of us!” I shout back as I lunge for her, knocking her flat on her back. I put my foot on her ankle and hold my arm across her arm to keep her pinned to the ground. I get her pinned a little too easily, almost as if she is letting me keep her on the ground. “Where’s your girlfriend?” She smiles at me, as if she is enjoying losing. A small pit forms in my stomach. “What have you done with her?” I shout at her, pushing downward onto her with more force. The smile on her face disappears. “Oh, so you don’t know where she is either?” She rolls her eyes. “So, this attack was useless. We just wanted her.” “What are you talking about? You took her!” I yell at her. “I most certainly did not, Young Alpha. I was here for a peaceful encounter. But, your guards attacked us. We are just defending ourselves.” I feel her whole body go limp underneath my hold, but I don’t let up. “What do you want with her?” I demand. “She’s a True Alpha. I want her to kill my mother.” She says through gritted teeth. “Not like you’ll live that long.” Within a second, she had overpowered me and had me pinned to the ground. I look over to Justin and can’t hide the fear that I feel before looking back to Alyson. I saw the wicked smile across her face as she shoved her hand into my chest cavity and grabbed hold of my heart. Justin’s POV: I was thrown into Hunter, and without a moment’s hesitation, he got up to go after Alyson. I had barely managed to get onto my feet before someone else punched me in the jaw. I stumbled backwards a little bit before I regained my footing. The vampire that stood in front of me was smiling as he prepared to attack once again, but I ducked under the blows that the vamp threw at me and immediately snapped his neck. He’s a vampire so he will come-to soon. I turn back around and get hit with a wave of power that only a witch can provide. I fall to one knee, covering my ears as it feels like blood vessels are popping in my head over and over again. I cry out in pain just before it subsides and I am kicked in the face. I fall to the ground and watch as blood drips into a small puddle in the dirt below my face. “That was just cheap, man.” I push myself off the ground and turn around. As I get up, I lock eyes with Hunter. His eyes are filled with fear. I got hit in the gut, but I grabbed the foot and threw the guy behind me with ease. When I turn back to face Hunter, Alyson has her hand in his chest. My heart instantly starts racing as I hurdle the witch standing between me and Alyson. If I knock into her, she will no doubt rip out his heart with the impact. “Stop!” I yell so loud that everyone fighting around us stops what they are doing to watch. Alyson looks over to me, sending chills throughout my body. Hunter gasps in pain as Alyson smiles at me. “Well, isn’t this familiar?” She says with an evil voice. “The two of you are so predictable.” “Let him go.” I growl. She gets to the side of Hunter, kneeling on the ground but never taking her hand out of his chest. “Now, why would I do that?” My mind is racing at a million miles an hour to think of a reason. “Let him go, and I’ll join your society of hunters.” I blurted out before the thought had fully come across my mind. “Oh. Well, that is unexpected.” Alyson removes her hand from Hunter’s chest and he rolls over onto his side to begin the healing process. My eyes quickly move back over to Alyson as she licks the blood from her fingers and pulls out a handkerchief from her pocket. “Enough!” Elijah comes running up behind me. “Oh, it’s big bad Elijah coming out to play.” Alyson smirks as she finishes wiping off her hand. Hunter remains motionless on the ground beside her. “To what do I owe the pleasure of being graced by your presence?” “Alyson. For the love of mother, what are you doing?” Elijah stands beside me and gives Alyson a serious look. “For one, I don’t love our mother. I’d rather have her die, ending everything. And two. I am here for your little project wolf. She is supposed to be the one that kills her, and I want to aid her in doing so. I showed up at the territory door to ask for her, and my people were suddenly attacked.” She turns to Hunter and growls. He tries to force himself off the ground, but Alyson puts her foot on his chest and forces him back to the ground. “Hey!” I growl. I can hear the pack growling behind me, ready to defend our future Alpha. Alyson ignores us and steps away from Hunter. Elijah adjusts his stance so he is in more of a fighting stance. “If you were here for a peaceful talk, why did you bring so many people?” Alyson stops and looks at Elijah. “Well, I did show up here to take their future Luna away from them. I thought there might be a fight. Wanted to be prepared.” Elijah was clearly not amused with her comment. “So, you brought an army in preparation for an attack.” “Little bro, I am looking to end supernatural beings as we know them. Vampires, werewolves, witches… All of them will cease to exist. I am always prepared for an attack. Not everyone is with my cause.” Alyson squares up in front of Elijah. “What will that do?” Elijah snaps at her. “End the violent ‘animal attacks’ they think are happening.” Alyson snaps back. “There will be so much more in the world once we are all gone.” “And yet, there will be so much less.” Elijah sounds almost as if he is begging his sister to see his side. “No more cures for people who could die in a car wreck, no one to protect them in the wars, no one to fight the horrible things that other humans create.” “There are people out there that don’t get help from any supernatural beings and are perfectly fine.” Alyson screams at him. “This world will be fine without us. We put their lives last when it comes to who lives or dies. It’s always the supernatural over the human.” She turns and starts marching towards Hunter, who has just gotten up on his feet. She backhands him so hard that he is thrown ten feet backwards and just goes limp as he hits the ground. “If you join me, I will spare his life this time. But know this, we will be back to finish the job.” “I will go if you promise to leave this pack alone.” I can feel my fists tightening as the words come out of my mouth. I don’t know if the tears that are falling from my eyes are out of anger or sadness. “I will leave the pack alone as long as you are alive and a part of the hunters.” Alyson looks me in the eyes and holds her hand out for me to take. I take a deep breath and look around at the pack. My eyes linger on my dad, who has blood splattered on his face and tear streaks on his cheeks. I have to close my eyes and force my hand to take hers. “No!” I heard a familiar voice shout behind me, but it was too late. I was being dragged away from the pack as all the vampires carried everyone away from the territory.
