22I made an abrupt left onto a narrow pedestrians-only street. One step beyond the corner, I broke into a run. I swept by an optician’s window display of designer glasses by Christian Dior, and three shoe stores in a row. I dashed past a sidewalk arrangement of fresh and fragrant trout. Their silver scales shimmered atop a bed of shaved ice. Bursting through the back entrance to the Domy Centrum retail complex, I clattered down the rickety escalator. WARS and its sister department stores, SAWA and Junior, shared a common basement. I raced by worn shelves crowded with housewares. I shed clothing as I went, exiting the building on the side facing the main street. I stopped short to avoid slamming into a sidewalk saleswoman.
