Chapter3

1350 Words
The following morning came with unexpected quiet. Eva Sinclair sat by her bedroom window, gray eyes fixed on the city skyline beyond. The sun had barely risen, but the memories of last night’s gala remained vivid. The sounds of music, laughter, and applause lingered in her mind, refusing to fade. Rebecca had not yet come down for breakfast, and the house felt unusually empty. Eva sipped a cup of black coffee, letting the bitter taste anchor her thoughts. She had been trying to convince herself that last night’s events were nothing more than a social obligation, but the memory of Lucian Castle’s gaze lingered, stubborn and unnerving. It was not admiration. It was assessment. Every movement, every subtle expression he made had been deliberate. The certainty in his voice, the way he had claimed he disliked her yet admitted he wanted to keep speaking with her—it unsettled her in a way she could not explain. Her reverie was interrupted by the sound of her phone buzzing on the bedside table. She picked it up. A message from Rebecca: “ Breakfast is ready. Mom is insisting you join us. Also… we need to talk about tonight. You’re not going to leave me alone for the Castle’s dinner, are you? ” Eva exhaled slowly and replied, “ I’ll come down. But I won’t make promises about socializing. ” Moments later, she set her coffee aside and moved to get ready. Every movement felt mechanical. She wondered if her life was slowly becoming dictated by the expectations of others—Rebecca’s excitement, her parents’ social ambitions, and now, inexplicably, Lucian Castle’s interest. Breakfast was chaotic as usual. The Sinclair household operated on a predictable rhythm of polite conversation, clinking cutlery, and subtle competition for attention. But today, the air held a different tension. Rebecca barely ate, her mind likely replaying the engagement announcement. “ Eva, you’ll need to accompany me tonight,” Rebecca said finally, her voice low as she passed her a plate of scrambled eggs. “ Why? You’ll be fine on your own,” Eva replied. Rebecca’s cheeks flushed slightly. “Because you know him. You know him, and I… I need someone to protect me from his sharpness. ” Eva raised an eyebrow. “ You mean, protect you from your fiancé? ” Rebecca laughed nervously. “ He is not sharp to me. But you… you know him better than I do. You see the way he looks at me. ” Eva pursed her lips. “ Then consider this my gift to you: an evening of supervision. ” The morning passed slowly. Eva kept herself busy with errands around the house, but every time she glanced at the clock, the approaching evening seemed heavier. The thought of facing Lucian Castle again made her chest tighten. She reminded herself that nothing had been decided, yet the pull she felt toward him, reluctant as it was, remained undeniable. By evening, they were on their way to the Castle estate. The drive was long and silent, the air in the car thick with anticipation. Eva sat in the back, while Rebecca chatted nervously with their mother in the front seat. “ You are awfully quiet, Eva,” their mother said finally, glancing back at her. “ I’m listening,” Eva replied simply. “ Listening to what?” their mother asked, frowning. “ The tension,” Eva said, her gaze on the passing lights outside. “ It’s not just about last night. Something is brewing, and I want to see it clearly before I react. ” Rebecca’s grip on her purse tightened. “ You make everything sound so dramatic. ” Eva remained silent, which made the car ride even heavier. By the time they arrived, the estate was bathed in golden light from chandeliers and torches lining the grand driveway. The Castle family home seemed larger than she remembered. The windows reflected the evening sky, giving the mansion an almost otherworldly aura. Andalia Castle greeted them at the door. She was poised, her presence commanding even before she spoke. Her sharp eyes examined Eva briefly before returning to Rebecca. “ Welcome back, Sinclair family. Tonight’s dinner is small, private. It will give us a chance to discuss the wedding arrangements in more detail, and perhaps… meet Lucian properly after yesterday’s… surprises, ” Andalia said, her voice smooth but carrying an unmistakable edge. Eva nodded politely but said nothing. She noticed the slight smirk on Andalia’s lips as she led them into the grand dining hall. The room was magnificent—long polished tables, elegant floral arrangements, and servants moving with quiet precision. Lucian stood at the head of the table. He had changed into a tailored dark suit, the same calm intensity radiating from him as before. He acknowledged the Sinclair family with a brief nod, but his eyes immediately found Eva’s again. She felt it—the silent assessment, the unspoken challenge in his gaze. The dinner began with polite conversation, discussions about logistics, and carefully measured compliments. Eva found herself drifting into observation mode, noting every subtle interaction. Lucian’s mother watched Rebecca closely, gauging her reactions, while Andalia seemed to calculate the effect of every word spoken by the Sinclairs. When the food was cleared, and the servants had left, the tension became almost tangible. Lucian finally addressed Eva directly, his voice calm, but with an undertone that made her pulse quicken. “ You do realize, Miss Sinclair, that your presence here complicates matters. ” Eva’s eyes met his, steady and unflinching. “ I am aware, Mr Castle. But I did not come here to complicate anything. ” “ Yet you do,” he said, his lips curling slightly into the hint of a smile. “ Because you see clearly what most choose to ignore. ” “ Observation is not complicating,” Eva countered. “ Only when it is ignored does it cease to be dangerous ,” he replied. Rebecca shifted nervously, sensing the unspoken tension. Andalia leaned back slightly, her eyes narrowing at the dynamic unfolding before her. Lucian took a deliberate step closer to Eva. “ You intrigue me , Miss Sinclair. You frustrate me . And yet, for reasons I cannot explain, I want to know more. ” Eva felt the pull of his words, the dangerous allure of his controlled intensity. She refused to let herself be swayed. “ Then you should be careful. Some things are better left unknown. ” Lucian’s gaze hardened slightly, as if challenging her to a silent duel. “ I never avoid a challenge . ” The clock struck ten, and servants began clearing the table. Guests from the Castle family’s inner circle had already begun to leave, leaving the dining hall in a near-silence. Eva stood, feeling the weight of Lucian’s eyes on her even as she walked toward the door. But before she could reach it, his voice stopped her. “ Miss Sinclair . One more word. ” She turned slowly. “ You will need to decide soon , ” he said quietly, his eyes darkening in intensity. “ Because the engagement will not wait, and neither will the truths that are coming . ” Eva’s stomach dropped. She had a fleeting sense of anticipation mixed with unease. Something about his words suggested that whatever began last night was far from over, and that the coming days would test more than just their patience. The air between them was electric . And for the first time, Eva realized that the tangled web of family, duty, and desire she had avoided her whole life was now fully in motion . And it had her name written all over it . Outside, the night air pressed against the estate’s windows, cool and steady . Inside, Lucian Castle watched Eva Sinclair leave the room . A single thought settled firmly in his mind . “ I will not let her go , ” he whispered. Then the doors closed behind her, leaving the hall in sudden quiet . And somewhere, beyond the walls, the first real storm of their lives was beginning.
