Chapter Sixteen - Hearts' Day

620 Words
Sam's POV I used to love the thought about Valentine's Day. She imagined about finding true love and living happily ever after. Of course, I realized the harsh reality and finally convinced myself that there's no such thing as a happy ever after. As soon as I got out of the cab, vendors swarmed at me! I was offered with flowers and candies; asking if I had interest in purchasing one for a significant other or a crush for that matter. I declined them as nicely as I could. I wasn't in a festive mode. I had brought orchids on a pot to give to our teacher. I figured it would be a nice gesture towards Mrs. Bernardine, to say thanks for all the things that she had taught us. Mom was fond of gardening, she has a "green thumb" if you'd like to call it that way. We have a part of the house where it was just a window full of orchids. Urgh. What's up with people today buying gifts and stuff for other people that are ridicuously expensive in this time of year? They could always buy the people they love the same items for a cheaper price on another day of the year. Let's say, April or August perhaps? I don't get them, really, I don't. Some students were handing over cards they've made themselves to another student. Others would receive boxes of chocolates and bouquet of flowers from their "secret admirers". I could throw up anytime now, I honestly could! Just when I thought my day couldn't get much worse. I was minding my own business, when a kid was of tugging my skirt to get my attention. He gave me a big red freshly-picked rose. Then another kid approached me, followed by another kid, then another, then another. My heart started to race, I could pass out any moment. The kids were kindergartners from our school. I have about a dozen of roses in my hand now with absolutely no clue who it was from. Finally, a last kid arrive. He gave me a frothy white bouquet with cherry blossoms and a card. The smell of roses and cherry blossoms enveloped me in a mist. I couldn't think of anything to say. So I read the small card.. They say you fall in love only once. That is a lie! Every time I look at you, I fall in love all over again. Love, Secret Admirer ;) It made me smile. When I put down the card, I then saw Zen who just entered the the classroom. She smiled at me and started walking my way. I was sure I was hyperventilating. My heart beat was up to my neck and could barely breathe! She noticed that I was holding a bunch of flowers, she frowned. I don't get it. Before she could go any closer to me, she was greeted by Mel with a big fat kiss on the lips. I just rolled my eyes and turned around. "Well look who has a handful of roses this Valentines' Day?", Vanessa chimed. "Do you need a hand?" "Ugh! Yes please!", I practically begged her to help me. "Sure! Gimme some of those." I gave Vanessa half of what I was holding. "I never knew roses could be that heavy!" I complained. Vanessa laughed hysterically. "Don't be silly! You have bouquet of roses and cherry blossoms. Of course they're heavy." I went about my day as if nothing happened. My "secret admirer" never revealed himself or herself to me. Which was both a relief and stressful really, I don't know what to say or do so I could make-up for what he or she did.
