It was the 5th of June, 2001. Monday.
It's the first day of school and she's thrilled! She was in a great mood to help out her Economics teacher and other students to clean up the dusty Econ room. She doesn't mind getting down and dirty with her hands, especially when it's helping other people.
Sam wore a pair of jeans and a faded black shirt to school that day. She had to wear something dark so when she gets dirty, it won't be that big of a deal. She brought an extra shirt, just in case.
She was just minding her own business lifting things from one place to another when...
"Excuse me, do you need help?” asked an unfamiliar voice.
Sam turned around to see. It wasn't somebody she knew. She was sure she hadn't met her before. The girl was a little taller than her. She wore ripped jeans, a black Nirvana sleeveless shirt, had a short layered pixie cut with long bangs. The girl had black hair and a little splash of blond highlight here and there. She was smiling when Sam was looking at her. Hmm… Cute. Sam thought.
"Uh no. I'm all good! But thanks anyway", answered Sam looking at the girl up and down.
"You sure? You look like you need one right after rust and dust has covered almost your entire shoulder," the girl smiled again.
"Oh! Damn it! Huh!” She put aside the plywood she was carrying. “Must've happened when I lifted that roof and threw it over there!”
"Wow! You're a pretty strong for a girl."
"Well, I guess I am. It pays to eat your greens I guess".
The girl just stood there. Awkward.
"I...I think we're in the same class", said the girl.
"Oh really? That's cool!” replied Sam while still busy going about everywhere she's needed to help.
The girl was still there standing in Sam's way.
"Hey, listen. I'd love to stay and chat with you but the guys over here need help. Do you mind heading over the windowpane? It looks like a bunch of girls couldn't reach the top part", suggested Sam.
"Yeah, sure! I can do that.”
Sam just acknowledged the girl with a smile.
"I'll be on my way now. See you later,” said the girl as she jogged off in the direction Sam pointed to her.
"Sure thing!"
-o-
It wasn't long before the bell rang. Sam headed to her classroom and picked a seat by the window, just near the garden, somehow the view of nature calms her.
There wasn't much to do really on a first day of class except for getting to know your classmates. Their teacher had dismissed them early for recess. Sam chooses to stay inside and tidy things up. As soon as she was done, she went by the window and was lost in thought.
"Hi!"
Sam momentarily shook her head to get back to reality. "Oh, hi!", replied Sam. She turned to see a girl standing. She was sure this girl was familiar, she's just not sure where she knew her from or how.
"I just noticed you didn't went out of the room just like everybody else Don't you have somewhere to go or something to buy or something to eat?", asked the girl.
"Well, not really. I don't like crowds, I get anxious and wheezy, so it's best I stay put. And as for something to buy, I'm not really that hungry. I got snacks in my bag though."
"Oh, that's nice. Uhm, I'm Daisy by the way."
"Hi Daisy, pleased to meet you! I'm Sa–", but Daisy interrupted her.
"I know who you are," Daisy said smiling. "Everybody knows who you are."
"Ah, right." Sam replied nonchalantly, she was used to this kind of introduction. Not that she’s rude or anything, but hearing it over and over again by different people kind of, gets annoying.
Then Sam noticed another person peeking by the door. "Excuse me? Do you need help? Are you lost or something?" she asked the girl. "You can come in you know".
"Oh, I'm being rude. That's my friend right there.” Daisy interjected, pointing to the door. “And she wanted to be your friend, too." explained Daisy.
"Hey, I remember you from earlier. You talked to me by Econ room."
No response. Sam chuckled and turned to Daisy. “Has she suddenly gone mute?”
"Sorry, she's just nervous and shy Sam, that's all!"
"Well now, no need to be shy or nervous", Sam spoke while holding out her hand for a shake.
"And she wanted to ask you if she could walk you out to scho–" Just before Daisy could finish her sentence, her friend stormed away from the door in an instant!
Confused, Sam asked, "What the heck did just happen? What's up with her?"
"I apologize in my friend's behalf, Sam. She's Zen, she's clumsy and she's a huge fan of yours. She'd wanted to talk to you initially. But I guess the nerves got in the way," explained Daisy. "I better go after her to see if she's okay".
"Sure, sure. You better do that."
By the time the class has ended, Sam turned to see if Zen was still around and found nothing but an empty seat. She saw Daisy who just mouthed something like 'she already left home. Running!'.
What a weird girl. Sam thought.
