Chapter Fourteen - Reality Check

701 Words
Sam's POV 7 January 2002. Monday. Christmas and New Year's break was short-lived. Which was sad because I wanted to clear my mind off of that dream. I hadn't dreamt of anything like that since then and I was glad. I promised myself I'd be moving on. I came to school early. There were people already designated to clean up the room so I had time to be alone. I took off dad's RayBan that he gave to me on my birthday last year. I entered the room, surprisingly Zen was there at her seat writing something. I hadn't noticed that I paused by the door, she looked up and turned my way. Our eyes met. It was those moments where time seemed to pause and I could hear Stevie B's song intro of When I Dream About You in the background. But I had to break free from the gaze and walked up to my chair. Put down my bag and went ahead to the garden. I sat at my favorite spot, my back at the window and facing my surroundings. I then heard Daisy come in, you couldn't miss her when she comes into class, she's always loud. She greeted Zen and they started talking murmurs that I couldn't really make up from all the way over the garden. I decided block their conversation so I'd have a clear mind. Just when I though I'd finally get some peace and quite, some rowdy boys were in a fight that I had to go over and settle. Sigh. So much for peace and quite. I went over the boys and had one of the class officers help me out. They were fighting about some stupid toy. I just rolled my eyes. Boys. The teacher wasn't around yet so I went back to the room and fixed her table, making sure it's all tidy and neat. I over-heard from Daisy that Melody hasn't returned from her grandparent's place yet. "Sammy girl!", shouted Vanessa as she came into the room and hugged me, almost knocking me off! "Wow! You are loud, girl!", I answered back smiling at her. "I've always been loud and you know it!" She winked. "I know! How are you?", I asked her. "Oh same old, same old. I sure am glad the break's over! It was boring." she said. "I missed you! Tell me everything about your vacation!". We stepped aside from the blackboard and took a spot near the window, by the teacher's table. Vanessa noticed what I had done to my hair. "Wow! Look at you! You've ironed your hair or had a professional straighten it out of the salon?", she asked. "Yes, at the salon. I decided that it's the New Year so I should sport a new look." "Really? It looks good on you though!" "You think so? Gee, thanks Ness!" "I don't just think so, I know so!", and she winked. I told Vanessa about my dream. She said it was a sign that I should be moving on since on my dream I wasn't the one chasing Zen. And just because I turned my back first and left. Ness was so full of dream interpretations that she had me believing at some point. We went about chatting and minding our own business when I over-heard Daisy again, talking to Zen asking if she was sure she was going to break up with Melody. Did I just heard that right? I thought. Don't get your hopes up. "Sammy girl, were you listening?" Vanessa snapped me out of it. "I'm sorry, Ness. What were you saying again?" "I said if you want to come over my place later? Dad bought me a brand new mobile but he wouldn't let me bring it to school." Vanessa said. "Unless you have other plans", as she was pointing her thumb at the back row where Zen and Daisy were at. "Sure thing, no problem! Of course I don't have other plans! Silly." "Good! I'll wait for you after school then." Just then Mrs. Bernardine entered the room and started to check the attendance. She was aware Melody wouldn't be around. Hmm. I wondered when she'll be back.
