A twig snaps outside the cave. I freeze. Eutis puts her finger to her lips.
Footsteps. Heavy. Slow.
A shadow blocks the cave entrance. A deep voice growls, "Found you."
Not Alexander. Not Ray. Someone else.
My heart pounds so hard I feel it in my throat. The cave is small, too small to run. Eutis and I are trapped like rabbits in a burrow.
The man steps into the cave entrance. Moonlight catches his face. He is tall, broad, with dirty blonde hair and cold blue eyes. His clothes are torn. Blood stains his shirt. A scar runs from his ear to his chin. His hands are large, knuckles cracked and bruised.
"Please," Eutis says. She pushes herself in front of me, her old body blocking his view. "We have nothing of value. Let us pass. We are just two women trying to survive."
