CHAPTER 52 – Guard Elena The howl echoes through the old forest. Long. Loud. Hungry. Alexander's howl. Ray pulls back. His hand is on his sword. "We have to move. Now." The forest darkens. Shapes move between the silver trees. Yellow eyes glow in the shadows. Many of them. Too many. "Run!" Ray shouts. We run. The silver trees blur. The moonlight is bright but the shadows are deeper. My heels slip on the moss. I kick them off. My bare feet are cold but sure. Behind us, paws pound the earth. Growls. Snarls. They are close. "Ray, they are gaining!" "I know. Keep going." Ray shifts. His wolf is gray and silver, massive. He turns and faces the pack. His teeth are bared. "Ray, no!" But he is already fighting. His jaws close around a gray wolf's throat. He shakes. The wolf goes limp.
