Chapter 8

I noticed two things when I woke up. First thing was the pounding in my head. Second thing I noticed was that my head was on something warm. I glance up and my heart skipped a beat. My head was laying on dad's hard bare chest. How did I end up here? I try to move, but I feel an arm squeeze my stomach and I stiffen. "Good morning, baby girl." Derek whispers. A million thoughts filled my head. What the hell happened last night? I couldn't remember anything and the more I tried to remember the more my head hurt. Derek pulls me to him with my back against his hard body. I glance up at dad, but he is still deep in sleep. He's a heavy sleeper. I turn around and face Derek. "Good morning." My mouth felt dry and my voice came out raspy. Derek smiles and tucks a lock of hair that was on my face behind my ear. "How are you feeling?" How am I feeling? Feeling about what?! I was so confused so I just said. "Have you ever seen those old pictures of men working on the railroads?" He nods. "Yes, they have big hammers to get the railroad spikes into the ties." "Yes, well, I feel like I got one of those spikes is being hammered from the inside of my head, moving out." Derek laughs softly. "That's what happens when you drink too much, young lady." He flicks my nose. I crease my brows. "Drink?" I ask him confused then everyrhing comes rushing back to me. The confession, the rejection, the date with Leo, telling them I'm a virgin! Oh, s**t! "By the look on your face I'm assuming you remember." Derek says. I look at him, but quickly avert my eyes. "I'm sorry. I sit up and get out of the bed. "I-I am so, so sorry." Dad wakes up and smiles at me. "Hey, princess." He sees the look on my face. "Hey, what's wrong?" He asks concern. I shake my head.... even doing that hurt. "I am so sorry." I run out of the room, go to the bathroom and take a relaxing bath.... not so relaxing. I wrap a towel around my body and stare at my reflection in the mirror. I groan, "Stupid! Why did I have to go and tell them?" Stop whining and go face them. You can't avoid them forever, you know? Ugh! I know, I know. I sigh and go to my room to get dressed. I decide to wear a navy sun dress with small flowers in it and leave my hair down. Once downstairs I smell waffles and my stomach grumbles. I chose between going out the front door or going to the kitchen where I could hear my dads talking. I settled on the latter and decided to act like nothing ever happened. "Smells good." I said entering the kitchen. Derek, who was making breakfast looked over his shoulder and smiled at me. "Morning, baby girl." Dad comes up to me and hugs me. I tensed for a second but hugged him back. "How did you sleep?" He kisses the top of my head. I shrug. "Good, I guess." "Here, take this." He hands me two aspirins and orange juice. "Thanks," I say. "My head is killing me." "I bet." He laughs. I swallow the pills. "And I'm starving." With that Derek places the plates on the table and we eat. So far everything is good. No awkwardness, nothing. "So," Dad says. "About yesterday." I had to jinx it, didn't I?! "Breakfast was delicious, dad." I say trying to change the subject. "I'll do the dishes." I hear them sigh and I gather the plates. "Hayley, we need to talk." Derek says. I place the dirty dishes in the sink. "No, we don't." "Princess." There was silence. No one spoke until I finished cleaning the kitchen. "Did you have fun on your date?" Dad asks. I turn around. "Yes, I did." "What kind of i***t takes a girl to a club on thir first date?" Derek looked as if he was containing his anger. "And on top of that, get her drunk." "Leonardo is a nice guy." I defend my friend. "And no one forced me to do anything." "So you guys are together now?" Dad asked calmly, but his face said otherwise. To lie or to tell the truth? Tough decision, if I lie, I'm going to feel guilty and I don't want to put Leo in a weird position. If I tell the truth, they're going to think it was because of them which is totally true. "I... we're..." I sigh. "No, we're not together." Was that relief I saw in their eyes? "Good." Derek says. "Cause I didn't like the guy." I raise my brows. "You don't even know him." He shrugs and I shake my head with a chuckle. "It wouldn't have worked out anyways." "Why?" Derek asks. "Because of us?" He adds carefully. That caught me off guard. "No! Yes, I-I don't know." I take a much needed breath. "We're really good friends and we both agreed that we didn't want to risk our friendship." I wasn't going to tell them the other reason since I made a promise to Leo that I would keep his secret and I never break a promise. They stare at me for an awkward amount of time. "I'm going to Mia's, I haven't talked to her in like forever." "Tell her we said, hi." Dad said. Derek kept his eyes locked on me. "Okay, bye!" I leave the house and walk two blocks to my bestfriend's door step. I ring the bell and Mia answers the door wearing shorts and a bikini top. "Babe!" She yells and hugs me tightly. "M, I can't breath." "Oops." She lets go. "Sorry." She giggles. "I was about to call you." "I would have loved it if you'd done that a lot earlier." I say stepping inside. "Oh, no." She gives me a worried look. "It didn't go well." It wasn't a question. I shake my head and feel tears stream down my face. She wraps her arms around me lovingly. "Oh, Hales, I'm so sorry." I wipe the tears from my face. "It's okay, I'm okay. We both knew it was nearly impossible anyway." She wioes a tear that I missed and says. "Let's go to my room so you can tell me everything." And so we went to her room and I told her every little detail since the morning of my birthday to what happened a couple of minutes ago in the kitchen. "And that all of it." She sits on her bed deep in thought. "Do you know about Leo?" She asks. "You knew?" I ask her. "Don't be mad please, he asked me not to say anything." "I'm not mad, but yes, I figured it out last night in the club when he kept dry humping the guys on the dance floor." We laugh. "There were times when I had to drag him away because I thought he was going to f**k them right there. "I love that guy." She says and I agree with her. "So you're twlling me," She says getting bacl to my issue. "That after you got home drunk from your date with Leo and told them you're a virgin in every way possible." I narrow my eyes at her for the virgin comment. "That they took you to their bed, held you and slept with you?" "Yes, that is exactly what I just said." "And this morning they asked you if you and Leo were a thing?" "Mhm." "And when you answered no, they looked relieved?" She asks slowly. I groan and face paml myself. "It seemed like it, but it was probably my mind playing tricks on me." I say. "Making me see what I want to see." She bites her lip. "Spill it." I say. Whenever Mia bites her lip, it means she has something to get off her chest. "It's just, I didn't want to tell you this before because I didn't want to give you any false hope." She says. "But you're not imagining anything" I raise a brow. "Care to elaborate?" She rolls her eyes. "So impatient, well what I'm trying to say is that I've seen the way they look at you." "What way?" I ask, not following. "It's not always a look a father should give to their daughter." She says. "There are lots of heart eyes whenever they look at you." I blink at her and laugh. "I'm serious, Hales!" She says. "I know because it's the same look you give to them." I see that she's serious and stop laughing. "Are you sure?" "Duh! Or else I wouldn't be telling you." "But," I crease my brows. "They said that they couldn't do it. That it was wrong." "Of course they said that! They're the adults, your dad's, it's not easy for them to admit they want their daughter just as much as she wants them." I let everything sink in. "Yes, you're right." "I'm always right." She smirks and I stuck out my tongue at her. "So what should I do now?" I ask her. She grins. "Now it's time for them to come to you." "And how do I do that?" Her grin widens. "Get ready because I'm going to teach you how to be a..." She wiggled her eyebrows. "TEASE." She rubs her hands together looking like an evil scientist. "They won't be able to hold for long."
