9. Bitter Comfort

1618 Words
Contrary to what Leah thought last night, she ended up falling into a deep and peaceful sleep. She didn’t even know when her eyes had closed. But the next morning, when she opened them again, her heart instantly filled with regret. 'Why did I fall asleep?' she thought, sitting up quickly on the bed. But as she moved, she noticed her body didn’t hurt like it usually did. The pain was still there, but it wasn’t as bad. It was way less than the pain she was used to. And then it hit her, this was the first time in three years that she had slept this peacefully. For the last three years, every single night had been a nightmare for Leah. She was never safe, not even in her sleep. They used to take her even when she was unconscious. And every morning when she woke up, her body would be in pain, covered in bruises and horrible reminders of what they had done to her. But waking up here was... different. And somehow, that made her feel just a little better. Leah slowly got off the bed and walked to the washroom and opened the door carefully. Inside, she saw a sink cabinet, and right there, placed neatly on top, were two new toothbrushes. Without thinking much, she picked one, brushed her teeth, and then splashed cold water on her face. When she stepped back into the room, she saw a maid stood near the couch, and a tray of breakfast was already placed on the small table. The smell of warm food filled the air. "Good morning, Ma’am. Please have your breakfast," the maid said kindly with a gentle smile. Leah froze in place for a second. The maid’s kindness… her soft voice… it reminded Leah of Tessa. Tessa had been the only person kind to her after her mom passed away. Leah was sure it was Tessa’s care and love that kept her alive through everything. Tessa used to protect her, sneak food for her, clean her wounds, and whisper kind words when no one else cared. But they killed her. They killed Tessa right in front of Leah’s eyes. And now these people were trying to assure her she was safe? That she should sit and eat peacefully like everything was okay? "Ma’am, why are you crying? Is something wrong?" the maid asked as she saw a tear roll down Leah’s cheek. Leah didn’t answer right away. Her body stiffened, and she slowly walked toward the table. She stared at the breakfast place there. The warm steam was still rising from the food. It smelled good, but it didn’t bring her any comfort. After a few seconds, she turned to look at the maid. "I want to escape from here," Leah said quietly. "Can you please help me with that?" She didn’t really think too much before asking. She just hoped maybe the maid would be a little kind. "Wh… what?" the maid stammered, clearly surprised by Leah’s request. "But why?' "Why?" Leah snapped, her voice rising as her chest burned with frustration. "Can’t you see I’m caged here without my will?" She didn’t mean to sound so harsh, but all her emotions were boiling up inside her. It was too much to hold in. "Pardon me, ma’am," the maid said, looking down at the floor. "But I’m just a maid working under our master’s order. I can’t help you to escape… because it will lead to my own demise." Leah immediately felt bad. The maid looked young and she scared her. She was probably just following orders. Maybe she didn’t even have a choice either. The maid looked up again. Her eyes were a little sad but also confused. "But why do you want to leave? Our master is desperately taking care of you. He also wants the best for you." Leah let out a small, bitter scoff. She couldn’t help it. The way the maid spoke so kindly about her master made her stomach twist. Sure, he was giving her food, a clean room, and even new clothes. But Leah knew better. Nothing in life ever came for free. Especially not for her. People who pretended to be kind always wanted something in return. That’s what she had learned the hard way. Miguel and Ander also pretended to care. But all they did was use her. Hurt her. Break her. This man wasn’t any different. Maybe he wasn’t doing the same things… yet. But she knew there had to be a reason. "Ma’am, can you please have your breakfast? Otherwise, it would go cold," the maid asked gently, snapping Leah out of her thoughts. Leah sighed deeply. She looked at the food again. It looked so warm and fresh. But her throat felt tight. Still, she pulled herself together and sat down on the couch. She picked up the fork and slowly started eating. It was hard to swallow the food, but she forced herself. She had to stay strong. She needed to get healthy and also gained her strength back. Because very soon… she was going to escape this place no matter what. Once Leah finished her breakfast, she took the medicine that was placed next to her plate. After swallowing the pills with a glass of water, she decided to take a shower. She was still wearing a baggy t-shirt and loose sweatpants, which she guessed belonged to that unknown man who brought her here. Since Leah couldn’t find any of her own clothes in the room, she thought she would just wear the same outfit again after the shower. But before she could step into the washroom, a maid came in holding a few shopping bags. "Master had ordered a few clothes for you, ma’am. I’m going to place them in the closet," the maid said politely before Leah even had the chance to ask anything. Leah just rolled her eyes. She didn’t believe any of this kindness. In her mind, all of this was just some kind of trap. She didn’t say anything and just walked into the washroom. After taking a warm shower, Leah wrapped herself with a towel and went to the closet. The maid already arranged all the dresses and underwear neatly. She picked out a simple half-sleeve top and a pair of shorts along with underwear and changed into them. They felt soft and new and fitted her perfectly, but she couldn’t accept anything fully because her mind kept reminding her of the consequences. When she stepped out of the closet, Leah was surprised to see an old woman sitting on the couch. The woman stood up with a warm smile the moment she saw Leah. "Hello, Leah. I’m Dr. Freya Larma. I’ve been appointed by Damian for your treatment," the woman said in a kind voice, still smiling. "He....He… Hello…" Leah stammered. She wasn’t sure if she should trust a doctor sent by a man she didn’t even know. "Please come here and take a seat," the doctor said as she sat back down and pointed to the seat next to her. Leah gave a small, awkward smile and slowly walked over to sit beside the doctor. "How are you feeling today, Leah?" Dr. Freya asked gently. "Better than yesterday," Leah answered quickly without much emotion. The doctor nodded, understanding her quiet response. "Any pain or discomfort?" "In a few body parts, and a bit of ache in my wrist," Leah told her honestly. "The pain in your wrist should go away soon with proper rest," the doctor explained. "And for the other pain in your body, we need to do x-rays and tests to make sure we treat everything correctly." Leah didn’t really want any help. She didn’t want to stay here at all. But the doctor looked so professional and kind that Leah didn’t know how to say no. She just stayed quiet. "And Leah… I wanted to speak to you about something else, if you’re okay with it," Dr. Freya added gently. Leah felt her heart beat faster. "Y-Yes…" she said nervously. "I checked your body yesterday. There were many bruises and marks… especially in your intimate parts," the doctor said softly. "And I believe you already know what exactly happened to you. Do you have pain in those areas?" Leah’s eyes filled with tears instantly. She looked down, unable to speak. The memories of being naked and continually r***d by them, flashed in her mind and it felt like someone had stabbed her heart. Even though the doctor’s voice was gentle and careful, Leah didn’t know how she could ever say it out loud. How could she tell the doctor that those monsters played with her body like she was just a doll to them? A broken, useless doll they used again and again in the most brutal way possible. Just thinking about it made her chest tighten and her stomach twist in pain. She didn’t want to talk about it. Not with the doctor. Not with anyone. She didn’t want to see the pity in their eyes, the way people look at something so broken that it can never be fixed. Leah didn’t want to be that girl whom everyone looked at with sympathy like she was a hopeless case. Like she was only a destroyed toy someone was trying to put back together. "Hey… I’m sorry if I hurt you with my words," the doctor said, noticing the tears in Leah's eyes. “I’m here to help you, Leah. I really didn’t mean to—” "If you really want to help then can you help me get out of here?" Leah asked, cutting her off.
