15. Dark Legacy

Damian’s eyes snapped toward her immediately. The maid was staring at him with wide eyes, clearly shocked. But the moment she saw him look, she quickly bowed her head and mumbled an apology before stepping back. Damian rolled his eyes. He expected this kind of reaction from the servants. A lot of them had seen him grow up from a young age. They all knew his nature. They knew how cold he was.. He was never gentle, never affectionate to anyone. Definitely not to any woman. None of them had ever seen him having breakfast with someone like this… and being this weirdly kind. They were shocked. But honestly… Damian was kind of shocked too. It was beyond his belief that he was patiently waiting for a woman to finish her food. Even just a few weeks ago, if someone had told him he’d be this insanely attracted to a girl and treat her this nicely, he would’ve called them crazy. His usual way of dealing with attraction was f*****g the woman and get her out of his mind. But with this particular woman sitting right in front of him, Damian wasn’t so sure. Despite every pain and abuse she’d been through, she still looked so heartbreakingly beautiful and innocent. Damian could tell that Ander hadn’t fully corrupted her. Leah was still pure and naive, beneath that sinfully sexy body. But what scared him most was himself. He had no idea whether he’d end up corrupting her more than she already was He would never hurt her but he wasn’t good for her. Hell, he wasn’t good for any woman. Damian would certainly protect her from any bastard who dared to look at her the wrong way. But the real problem was, who would protect her from him? "I’m done," Leah mumbled softly after finally finishing her breakfast. Damian nodded once and stood up from his seat, fixing his coat a little as he glanced down at her. "Follow me," he said coldly. Leah quickly stood up too, not saying anything. She followed him quietly through the exit of the mansion. The maids bowed their heads as they passed by, and soon they stepped out the front doors. A shiny black Mercedes was already waiting for them in the driveway. The driver got out and opened the door for them. Damian got in first and then Leah stepped in after him. The door closed behind them and the car slowly drove off from the mansion. Leah sat on the seat quietly, keeping her hands folded on her lap. But then her eyes moved to the window. Her lips parted slightly. It had been so long… since she saw the outside world. Her eyes kept staring through the glass, watching the buildings, the roads, the trees passing by. Even random people walking on the streets made her stare longer. It felt unreal. The wind swaying the tree branches, the sun shining bright... It was all so simple, but to her, it felt like strangely unfamiliar. It was the first time she was seeing the outside world since Ander and Miguel locked her away. Since they trapped her like a bird inside a cage. And now, looking outside like this, it made something inside her ache. The more she looked, the more alive she felt. She had almost forgotten what it felt like to just… live. To just exist freely. Breathing in fresh air, watching the world move. All those years locked away… she hadn’t even realized how much she was missing. She sighed heavily, her heart tightening, and then slowly turned her head. Damian was sitting beside her in the back seat, holding his phone near his ear, talking to someone. His voice was calm but serious. Leah looked at him for a moment. She was still scared of him, that fear still stayed inside her, but… not like before. Not as deep and terrifying. No matter how cold he acted sometimes, he didn’t seem as bad as Ander or Miguel. But the strange thing was… she didn’t even know his name yet. The man who was taking care of her, who saved her, who now was taking her to the hospital… and she didn’t even know his name. Leah looked back down at her hands and started fidgeting with her fingers. She wanted to ask. She really did. But she didn’t know if she should talk first. What if he got annoyed? What if he didn’t like being asked something personal? Her stomach twisted a little with nervousness. "Leah," Damian called her name, his voice low. She looked up at him quickly with wide eyes. He had finished his call and was now looking at her with a serious but calm face. "Are you okay?" he asked again when she didn’t respond right away. "Ye… Yeah…" Leah stuttered, brushing a few strands of hair behind her ear awkwardly. She looked away fast and turned her face back toward the window, regretting staring at him like that. Damian kept looking at her. "Do you want to ask something?" he asked again, his voice more softer this time. Leah looked back at him. Her heart was still beating fast, but something about the way he looked at her made her feel a little safe. His eyes didn’t seem threatening. "Uh… Uhh… Yes," she said, her voice quiet as she smiled nervously. "I want to know your name… Is it okay?" Damian blinked slowly. He wasn’t expecting how shy she looked asking something so simple. A small smile appeared on his lips without him realizing. His eyes watched her with a soft, amused look. "My name is Damian… Damian García Santoro," he answered, his voice a little heavier with his Spanish accent. "Damian García Santoro," Leah repeated softly, the name rolling off her tongue. But the moment she said it, her eyes paused. That surname, Santoro, sounded way too familiar. Like she had heard it somewhere before. But where? Though the name did sound familiar, Leah tried not to overthink it at first. It wasn’t too surprising to know his surname, especially since she already knew he was involved in the mafia. But still… something about it didn’t sit right with her. The more she repeated “Damian García Santoro” in her head, the more it started to bother her. Like she was missing something. Her eyes narrowed slightly and she sank into deep thought, her brows furrowed as she tried to remember. Then suddenly her eyes widened and heart skipped a beat. She gasped loudly. "Yo… You… Are you from the Santoro family?" she blurted out, not even able to hold back. "The notorious Santoro family of Spain…?" The words slipped from her mouth before she could stop herself. Right after saying it, she instantly slapped her hands over her lips, realizing what she just said. Her face turned pale. She didn’t mean to speak it out loud like that. But she was so shocked and completely taken back by the realization, that she just let it slip. That surname, Leah had heaed rom her mom and Miguel. Her mom always warned her to stay away from certain names, and this was one of them. Besides, Miguel always cursed someone from the Santoro family, though she couldn’t remember the exact name. All she could recall was that the Santoro family was feared and powerful. They were the dominators of the underworld in Spain for decades. As fear sank through, Leah slowly turned her head toward him, her hands still covering her mouth. Damian was staring at her now, his brows slightly raised. He didn’t look angry, just surprised by what she just said. "I… I’m sorry…" Leah mumbled behind her hands, slowly lowering them. "I didn’t mean to insult your family…" Her voice trembled slightly, filled with fear. She didn’t know what kind of consequences could come from calling his family notorious. That word sounded like an insult… especially to someone who actually belonged to that family. Damian leaned back slightly in his seat. "Notorious… huh…" he repeated quietly. Then suddenly broke into a laugh. Leah flinched from the sound. His laugh wasn’t warm neither it was even friendly. It felt cold. Like he was mocking her. "That sounds too genuine to describe the Santoro family," he said with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. Leah’s body froze. Even though they were sitting in an air-conditioned car, a chill ran down her spine. His voice, his expression... It all felt too emotionless. Too calm. It made her even more afraid. She quickly looked away from him, her throat tightening. Her eyes stared out the window again, trying her best not to meet his sharp, green eyes. She didn’t dare say another word. And now that she knew who he really was… it scared her more than before.
