TheWomanBehindTheA.R

“Who are you?” Damon’s voice was quiet. Too quiet. Amelia stood completely still. The broken window behind them allowed the cold night air to sweep through the room. Curtains moved violently in the darkness, brushing against the shattered glass. The stranger was gone. But his words remained. Ask your wife about Rose Holdings. Ask her who A.R. really is. Damon stared at Amelia as though he had never seen her before. For three years, she had known this moment would come. She had imagined it countless times. She had imagined anger. Accusations. Divorce papers. Perhaps even hatred. But she had never imagined the look in Damon’s eyes. It wasn't hatred. It was hurt. “Amelia,” he said again. “Who are you?” She swallowed. “I’m your wife.” His jaw tightened. “Don't do that.” “Do what?” “Don't give me an answer that avoids the question.” Amelia looked away. Damon stepped closer. “Rose Holdings.” Silence. “Does that name mean something to you?” Amelia's fingers curled slowly against her palm. “Yes.” His eyes narrowed. “How much?” She didn't answer. Damon laughed once, bitterly. “For years, I've been fighting a company I couldn't even trace properly. Every time I made a move, A.R. was already three steps ahead.” He took another step toward her. “Every time I thought I had finally cornered that person, my deal collapsed. My investors changed their minds. My competitors suddenly received funding.” His voice dropped. “And every single time…” He stared directly into her eyes. “You were there.” Amelia's heart pounded. “Damon—” “Was it you?” She closed her eyes. That was all the answer he needed. Damon stepped backward. “No.” “Damon…” “You're A.R.” It wasn't a question anymore. Amelia opened her eyes. “Yes.” The word barely left her lips. But it destroyed everything. Damon stared at her. The woman he had believed was a quiet, ordinary wife. The woman he had once teased about shopping too carefully. The woman he had thought depended on his money. The woman he had proudly protected from the harsh world of billion-dollar business. She was the woman who had been defeating him for years. His greatest rival. His equal. Maybe even his superior. “You,” he whispered. Amelia nodded. “I’m A.R.” Damon ran a hand through his hair. “How long?” “Since before we met.” His expression changed. “You knew who I was?” “Yes.” “And you still married me?” “Yes.” His laugh was colder this time. “So this entire marriage…” “No.” Amelia stepped toward him. “The marriage was real.” “Then why hide it?” “Because I needed to know if you loved me.” Damon stared at her. “What?” “I didn't want to know if Damon Black loved the daughter of Edward Rose.” Her voice trembled slightly. “I didn't want to know if you loved a billionaire. I wanted to know if you loved Amelia.” “You lied to me.” “I hid something from you.” “That is the same thing!” “No.” Her voice suddenly strengthened. “It isn't.” Damon went silent. Amelia looked at him steadily. “I never used your company to destroy you.” His eyes hardened. “You outbid me.” “When you were about to make a terrible investment.” “You bought companies I was negotiating for.” “Because those companies were being used to move stolen money.” Damon froze. “What?” Amelia reached for her handbag. She pulled out the flash drive from safe-deposit box 317. “This is why.” She held it between them. “My father discovered someone was moving money through Black Enterprises.” Damon stared at the drive. “My father?” “Richard Black.” The name hung between them. Damon shook his head. “No.” “Your father was involved.” “You're lying.” “I wish I were.” Damon's eyes darkened. “My father died two years ago.” “I know.” “Then how could he be involved?” “Because he wasn't working alone.” Amelia lowered the flash drive. “Someone inside Black Enterprises helped him.” Damon stared at her. “Who?” “I don't know.” “Then how can you accuse my family?” “My father disappeared three years ago because he discovered the truth.” Damon went completely still. Amelia continued. “He left evidence. Financial records. Transfers. Shell companies. Names.” She looked toward the broken window. “And tonight, someone tried to scare us away from finding them.” Damon's expression shifted. “You knew this before you married me?” “I knew your family was connected to my father's disappearance.” His face tightened. “And you married me anyway?” “Yes.” “Why?” “Because I loved you.” That stopped him. Amelia's eyes filled with tears. “I hated the possibility that you were part of it. I hated that your last name might be connected to the worst thing that ever happened to my family.” She took a shaky breath. “But I couldn't stop loving you.” Damon looked away. For several seconds, neither spoke. Then he said quietly, “Did you ever love me without investigating me?” Amelia's heart broke. “Yes.” “Did you ever trust me?” She hesitated. “That’s why I hid the truth.” Damon looked back at her. “You didn't trust me.” “I didn't know if I could.” The words hurt them both. Damon walked toward the window. His eyes fell on the street below. “Who else knows?” “Daniel. Maya.” “And Chloe?” “No.” His expression changed at the mention of her name. “Chloe knows something.” Amelia frowned. “What do you mean?” “She knew about A.R. before tonight.” Amelia's face hardened. “How?” “I don't know.” Damon turned toward her. “She came to see me because of the pregnancy.” Amelia's expression remained controlled. “And?” “I had a DNA test arranged.” Amelia blinked. “You did?” “Yes.” Damon's voice became cold. “The results came back tonight.” He reached into his jacket. Amelia watched him pull out a folded document. He handed it to her. She looked down. Then her eyes widened. “No…” Damon nodded. “Chloe is not carrying my child.” Amelia stared at the report. “The pregnancy is real,” he said. “But the child isn't mine.” For the first time that night, Amelia felt something close to relief. Then Damon said, “And that's not the worst part.” She looked up. “What?” “She knew I would discover the truth.” His eyes were dark. “She wanted me to believe the child was mine long enough to force me into a decision.” Amelia's mind raced. “Why?” “I don't know.” Damon stepped closer. “But someone paid her.” “Who?” “I haven't found out yet.” Amelia looked at the flash drive in her hand. Then at Damon. “Maybe it's connected.” “I think it is.” A sudden sound came from outside. Both of them turned. A car sped away from the front of the house. Damon immediately moved toward Amelia. “Stay behind me.” She almost smiled. Even now. Even after everything. He was still protecting her. “Damon.” He stopped. “I don't need you to protect me.” His eyes met hers. “I know.” There was something different in his expression now. Respect. Not pity. Not superiority. Respect. “You're A.R.,” he said quietly. “Yes.” “You could have destroyed me.” “I could have.” “But you didn't.” “No.” “Why?” Amelia looked at him. “Because I never wanted to destroy you.” She paused. “I wanted the truth.” Damon's eyes softened. “And now?” She looked at the flash drive. “Now I want to know what happened to my father.” A long silence followed. Then Damon reached for her hand. Amelia hesitated. But she let him take it. “I'll help you.” She looked at him in surprise. “You don't have to.” “I know.” He squeezed her hand. “But if someone in my family hurt your father…” His jaw tightened. “I want the truth too.” For one brief moment, Amelia felt hope. Then her phone vibrated. She pulled it from her pocket. One new message. Her blood ran cold. YOU FINALLY TOLD HIM. Another message appeared. GOOD. Then a photograph loaded. Amelia's breath caught. It was an old photograph of her father. Edward Rose stood beside three men. One was Richard Black. The second was a much younger Damon. And the third man Amelia stared at the face. She knew him. She had seen him earlier that night. The man in the black coat. The man who had been watching her. A final message appeared beneath the photograph. ASK DAMON WHY HE WAS THERE THE NIGHT YOUR FATHER DISAPPEARED. Amelia slowly raised her eyes. Damon was watching her. “What is it?” She couldn't speak. Because suddenly, one terrifying possibility had entered her mind. Maybe Damon wasn't just the man she loved. Maybe he had been there when her father vanished. And maybe he knew far more than he had ever told her. To be continued…
