Friendly HandsT he Coast Guard gives us hot coffee and wraps Maria and me in space blankets for the trip back to shore. I’m utterly exhausted and Maria is dead asleep by the time we reach the police docks. The first people I see when they’ve managed to get me ashore on very shaky legs is Lynn Fulton and Commander Kanh from the base. Apparently, the local police have made some calls to reassure them that I’m alive and well—alive, anyway. I can’t recall a time in my life when my body has felt so wrecked. With no adrenaline surge to keep me distracted, I’m starting to realize how badly I’ve been beat up on this little adventure. Lynn gives me a huge hug and then starts to babble in Spanish with Maria. My Navy boss mumbles something about how he’ll see me later when I’ve had a chance to rest
