Chapter 12
Logan
I start to wake up and I hear an annoying beeping sound. My eyes flutter opened and the first thing I see is Lori. “Lori.” I rasp. She rushes to get me a drink of water. She puts the straw in my mouth, and I take a couple of small sips to ease my throat. “What happened?” I ask. “You were shot baby. One to the shoulder and one to the stomach.” She tells me and it all starts coming back. s**t. My client’s ex came into my office and shot me for taking his son from him. “s**t. Are you okay honey?” I ask. “I’m fine baby. How are you feeling?” I ask. “Like shit.” I tell her and laugh a little. The nurse comes in and checks his vitals before checking my incisions. Once she leaves us alone, I pat the side of the bed for her to sit. She moves next to me, and I take her hand. “Talk to me baby. Something’s on your mind.” I tell her. She looks at our joined hands and says, “I almost lost you.” I tilt her chin up so she’s looking at me. “You’re not getting rid of me that easy.” I say. “That’s what Ashton said.” She tells me. “Did he come get you?” I ask. “Izzy did. Picked up me and Alice. Evan and Mary are here too.” She tells me. “Did they catch him?” I ask. “They did. Don’t be mad.” She tells me. “About what?” I ask. “I had Ashton and Evan take me to see him. I didn’t touch him, but I did say what I needed to say to him.” She tells me. “What did you have to say to him?” I ask. “Do you remember when I told you about him being a friend of my dad’s?” she asks, and I nod my head yes. “Well, there’s more to it. He would grope me when my dad wasn’t around and talk about how he wanted to cut me up while he f****d me and asked how much my dad would charge for him to let him f**k me.” She tells me. “I’ll kill him.” I whisper. “Already done.” She tells me and I look at her confused. “I had Rico hang him from a meat hook and said what I wanted to say. I made him look at me while I told him who I was. He didn’t recognize me at first. But as soon as I told him who I was, he freaked out a little. I got to decide what happened to him.” She tells me. “What did you decide?” I ask. “He was buried alive with his d**k in his mouth.” She tells me and I start laughing before I feel like I’m being ripped apart when my stitches pull. “f**k I love you.” I say and she cups my face before saying “I love you too.”
Over the next few days, I’m still in the hospital recovering. Lori called my assistant and she’s handing some of my cases over to some of the other lawyers working for me. The doctor said my shoulder should get full motion back with a little physical therapy but we’re waiting on the tests to come back on my kidney. Lori told me that they removed my spleen and that I should make a full recovery. The doctor comes in with my test results. “Good afternoon Mr. Edwards, Mrs. Edwards.” He says as he walks in. “Hello doctor.” We both say. “So, it looks like the injury to your kidney has healed pretty quick. That’s what we wanted to see. So, here’s what’s going to happen. You’re not going to have to do dialysis anymore and we’re going to release you to go home but you are to refrain from strenuous activities and if you see any blood in your urine, come back immediately.” He tells us. “I’ll make sure of it.” Lori says.
After we get my discharge papers, we head outside and there’s a male nurse that’s pushing my wheelchair. He’s been joking around with Lori and at first, I was getting jealous that he was making her laugh but then he started telling us about his husband and their new puppy and I relaxed. I realized I didn’t have anything to worry about.
Hans picks us up and takes us home. He helps Lori out of the car and then helps me. He helps me inside and over to the couch. “Let me know if you need anything boss.” He says before seeing himself out. Alice comes to the couch and leans down to hug me. “Welcome home son.” She says. “Thanks mom.” I say before Lori sits down next to me. She’s not gone far from me since I came out of surgery. The few minutes that Izzy got her to got to the cafeteria to eat, Ashton told me that she collapsed on him when the doctor told her what my injuries were. He said she scared him with the way she handled the guy that shot me. He said it was like she flipped a switch and was completely detached. That worries me. “I think you should have a session with Kathy.” I tell her. “I’m okay Logan.” She tells me. “Baby, you’ve barely left my side since I was shot. That’s a lot of stress to deal with and facing the man that shot me with the history you had with him? That’s a lot for anyone. Even if you don’t feel you need one, will you do one for me? To ease my mind?” I ask. “Okay. I’ll call her now.” She tells me before kissing me softly and heading upstairs to her office.
Once she’s gone, Alice asks. “What’s going on?” I have always been honest with her. “She’s the one that handled the guy that shot me. Ashton said she seemed detached when she was talking to him, and I want to make sure she’s okay. That s**t can’t be good for her or the baby.” I tell her. “Maybe a session will help her. We’ll all keep an eye on her for a while. Give her time to process it all.” She tells me.
An hour later, I’m flipping through the channels when Lori comes back in, and she looks like she’s crying. She sits on the couch next to me and snuggles into me. I hold her close, but I don’t say anything. I kiss the top of her head, and she whispers, “I love you Logan.” I hold her tighter and say “I love you too baby. Talk to me.” She moves to sit up and looks at her hands in her lap. “I called Kathy. Told her about you being shot and being scared that I was going to lose you. Told her about seeing the man that shot you and my history with him. I couldn’t figure out what made all the men in my life, before you, hurt me. What did I do wrong?” she asks. “You didn’t do anything wrong. Honey, some people are just evil. Completely evil. You are full of so much good. No one will ever hurt you like that again. You have my word.” I tell her. She looks up at me and says “I still worried that there’s something wrong with me. When I confronted him, it was like I was someone else.” she tells me. I pull her close again and she says “Kathy says it’s a coping mechanism. She said it’s like the emotional part of my brain cuts off to protect me from the emotional backlash.” She says. “How do you feel about that?” I ask. “I don’t know.” She tells me and her hand goes to her stomach. “Are you worried about the baby?” I ask. “You saw what I grew up with. What if I end up like him?” she asks. “Oh, that’s not going to happen. Your dad was evil honey. You’re not. Let me ask you this. When you think of someone hurting our baby, what’s the first thing that goes through your mind?” I ask. “To protect them.” She says. “That right there, says you’re nothing like him. You’re amazing. You’re an amazing wife and will be an even better mother.” I tell her. “Thank you.” She whispers.
We sit together in silence for a while before my phone rings. Lori leans forward and grabs it off the coffee table for me. “Hello?” I ask as I answer. “Hey man. Wanted to check in and see how you’re doing?” Ashton asks. “I’m okay. Resting but I’ll be fine.” I answer. “How’s Lori?” he asks. I look at my wife and then say “I’m putting you on speaker. You can ask her yourself.” I put my phone on speaker and Ashton asks, “How are you doing Lori?” She lays back against me and says “I’m okay. Had a session with Kathy a while ago. Needed to talk some things out but I’m okay.” She tells him. “Good. You scared us little sister. That was too much of an eerie calm you had going on.” He tells her. “I know. I didn’t mean to scare you.” She tells him. “I know I said this before but thanks for having my wife’s back man.” I say. “Anytime. You’d do the same if the roles were reversed.” He tells me and he’s right.
After talking to Ashton a little more, Lori starts yawning. “Let’s go take a nap mama.” I say and she stands up. Helping me up, she helps me up the stairs to make sure I don’t lose my balance on the stairs and once we’re in our room, I move to the bed, and she crawls on the bed with me. I lay on my back, and she lays with her head on my chest. “I wish we never had to leave this bed again.” She says softly. “Me too baby. I’m proud of you.” I tell her. “You are?” she asks. “I am. All the s**t you’ve been through, and not only have you been stepping up and helping Mary, but you stood up to someone from your past and you’re still standing. You married me and we’re having a baby. You’re a lot stronger than you think you are. And I am so proud to have you as my wife.” I tell her. She looks up at me and smiles softly before saying “While you were still sedated, I spoke to Izzy. Apparently, I can just do the two-year program for social work and still be able to help at the shelter. I told Izzy about the program I wanted to start, and she told me that I don’t even have to have a degree to get the program started. She said I could hire social workers to do what needs to be done and me oversee it.” She tells me. “Is that what you want?” I ask. “I may still go to college, but I would rather get the program going.” She tells me. “Well, I’ll be working from home for a while so we can get a game plan together and I can help with all of the legalities for it.” I tell her. “Thank you.” She says and lays her head back down on my chest.
After our nap, we are sitting up in bed and we start talking about her idea again. “Are you wanting it to be part of the mission or your own thing?” I ask. “I thought about it being my own thing, but I think it would be better to combine it with the mission. I was talking to Izzy, and she said she would get me in touch with her contacts to get some social workers for me if I wanted on my own but the thing is that the mission offers a lot of the services that these girls would need so it just makes sense to expand on the mission.” She tells me. “If that’s what you want to do, we can get Ashton and Izzy together and work out the details.” I tell her. “Mary wants to help too.” She tells me. “That will be good for her. It will help her to keep busy.” I tell her. “That is if Evan let’s her out of his sight.” She tells me, smiling softly. “What do you mean?” I ask.
“You know how you would come and do puzzles with me when we met?” she asks, and I nod. “Well, apparently, he has been bringing her art books and they’ve been spending time together.” She tells me. “Is she okay with that?” I ask. “She is. She says she feels safe with him. Just like I feel safe with you.” She tells me. “I will always protect you.” I tell her. “I know. I’ve never doubted.” she tells me.
After talking for a while about her plans for her teen pregnancy program, we head downstairs for dinner and I’m moving a little better. Not having to lean on her as much when I walk. Sitting at the island, Alice puts my plate in front of me and then hands me my antibiotics that I still have to take. I take my meds and start eating. Lori is in her place beside me. “I heard you say you had a session today. Are you okay?” she asks Lori. “I think so. She helped me understand my reaction a little bit.” Lori says. “I just hope that I never have to do that again.” She says. “Was there anyone else that used to hurt you?” I ask. “No. Dad did have this one woman that he used to bring around. She was really nice to me. Tried to protect me but dad got tired of her and stopped her from coming around.” She says. “What was her name? Maybe we can find her.” I tell her. “Really?” she asks, and I nod my head yes before taking another bite. “Her name was Mila Jacobs. She was always trying to get dad to stop drinking and stop using. I think that’s why he got rid of her. She was his age. She treated me like I mattered.” She says and I go to speak, and she stops me. “I know I matter. She was around when I was about ten or so.” I don’t even know if she’s still alive.” She tells me. “I’ll get her info to Rico. If she can be found, he will find her.” I tell her and she kisses me softly. “Now, eat. My baby’s hungry.” I tell her and she laughs softly before taking another bite of dinner.
It's time for bed and I tell Lori, “I have something for you. Well, for the baby.” I say. She looks at me curiously and I reach into the nightstand and hand her the small gift. She opens it and sees it’s a set of pacifiers. “I had it customized.” It says Baby Edwards. “I love it.” She says before climbing in my lap, straddling me. “I know you can’t do anything strenuous but that doesn’t mean I can’t do the work.” She says. “Are you sure baby? I know your emotions have been all over the place.” I say. She kisses me and says “I’m okay. I’ll let you know if it gets to be too much.” She tells me. “Okay.” I say, smirking before cupping her face and kissing her softly. I kiss across her jaw and down her neck as my hands slide down her sides to her hips and she starts grinding on me. I feel myself getting hard underneath her and she feels it too. I slip my hands under her shirt and slide it up and over her head. I kiss down to her breasts where I spend a few long minutes worshiping one n****e before moving to the next. She moans and grinds on my hard member even more. “So responsive. Fuck.” I rasp. I slide one hand into her panties and start rubbing slow circles on her c**t and she starts moaning before I kiss her deeply. I slide my fingers between her wet folds and slip one finger inside her and finger f**k her. As I feel her walls stretch a little, I add one more finger and slide in and out of her over and over with my thumb rubbing her c**t. “Oh God Logan. Don’t stop. Please. I’m so close.” She moans. “c*m for me baby.” I rasp in her ear and that’s all it takes to push her over the edge, and I feel her release run down my hand.
Pulling my fingers out, I bring them to my lips and suck her sweet nectar off my fingers. “Sweetest thing I’ve ever f*****g tasted.” I say and she starts pulling at my waistband. “Honey, hold on.” I say and she looks up at me worried. “Baby, I can’t handle you riding me.” I say. “Oh, I wasn’t planning on riding you. I want to taste you too.” She tells me. “Are you sure baby?” I ask. She leans up and kisses me before saying “Oh yeah.” She starts pulling the waistband down and we don’t even have to pull them all the way down for her to get to me. She settles between my legs and is stroking my hard member. “f**k that feels good.” I whisper as she slides her hand up and down my shaft. “That feel good baby?” she asks. I look into her eyes and nod my head yes. She leans down and runs the flat of her tongue up my shaft from base to tip before wrapping her lips around the head and slowly sliding her lips down my shaft. “Holy f*****g hell baby.” I moan as she takes me to the back of her throat. She slides up and down, at a slow and steady pace and I’m slowly losing my mind. I feel one hand sliding up and down my shaft, stroking what her mouth can’t take and the other hand lightly caressing my balls, and I feel them tighten. “f**k baby. I’m not going to last. Pull off baby.” I say, warning her that I’m about to c*m but she doesn’t. “Baby…Oh…Goddamn. Fuck.” I moan as I shoot my hot load down her throat, and she swallows every drop. I pull her back up to straddle me and kiss her deeply. When we break for breath, I put my forehead to hers and say “I love you so Goddamn much. f**k baby.” She has her eyes closed. “Did I do okay?” she asks, innocently. “You were absolutely perfect.” I tell her. “I’ve never done that before.” She tells me. “How?” I ask as I pull back to look at her. “Dad and Jake always had porn playing. It was hard not to see it.” She tells me. I pull her closer to me and she lays her head on my shoulder, and I wrap my arms around her and say “You will never go through that again.”
We sit like this for a while, not moving, not talking. I’m shirtless and she’s naked so it’s skin on skin and I can’t help running my fingers up and down her back, caressing her. “Tell me something I don’t know about you.” She whispers. “Okay. When I was about eight years old, I used to spend all day out in the woods behind my house. One day, I found this old fort. I probably shouldn’t have been in there because it was dilapidated. There was a teenager hiding out in there. He was beat all to hell and said he was hiding from his foster home. Every day I took him food and water while he was hiding out there. He was there for probably a week before moving on, but I would spend hours out there talking to him. I never told anyone about him.” I tell her. “Wow.” She says simply. “Your turn.” I tell her. “Well, you remember me telling you about Mila? Well, dad’s drinking used to be really bad. He would go on two- and three-day drunks. When he would finally pass out, he would sleep for a full 24-hours sometimes. Well, one time, she snuck me out of the house and took me for ice cream. She ran into one of her old friends and when she introduced me to her friend, she called me her daughter. She told me that I would always be her daughter even if she didn’t give birth to me.” She tells me. “That why you want to find her?” I ask. “Yeah. I don’t have mom here and dad was s**t. She was the only parental figure that gave a shit.” She tells me. “Then we’ll find her.” I tell her.
She finally drifts off to sleep and I just watch her. She has this peaceful look on her face, and I can’t believe how beautiful she is and that she’s mine. I’m still running my fingers up and down her bare back. I bring my other hand up to her face and brush the hair from her face. She doesn’t even stir. I move to lay on my back and stare at my ceiling. All I can think about is Lori and the baby. I was shot. That couldn’t have been easy for her. All that stress on her and the baby. I wonder if it’s too soon to take that babymoon. Maybe I should talk to Kathy. It might do Lori some good to get away from everything. Or we could do a family vacation. Alice hasn’t had a vacation in years. Maybe we can go to Greece like she talked about.
The next morning, I’m up before Lori. I let her sleep in while I head downstairs and see Alice at the stove, making breakfast. “Morning mom.” I say. “Morning Logan. How’d you sleep?” she asks. “Okay, I guess. Can I talk to you about something?” I ask. “Of course.” She tells me. “I was shot. I know that was stressful for all of you but especially for Lori. That kind of stress couldn’t have been good for her or the baby.” I say. “It was stressful for all of us. But Lori is more resilient than you think.” She tells me. “Oh, I know. But I was thinking about something.” I say. “What’s that?” she asks. “Ashton said something about taking Lori on a babymoon and I asked if she could go anywhere, where would she want to go and she said Greece. What would you think if we went for a week?” I ask. “I think she’d love it. What can I do to help?” she asks. “I’ll make the arrangements for the hotel and get the flight set up. I want to surprise her. Can you help get our things packed and yours, so she doesn’t suspect anything?” I ask. “Absolutely.” She tells me. “Great. I have a couple of phone calls to make.” I tell her.
I move to my office and open my laptop. I book the hotel and then call my pilot and have him get the plane ready. The next call is Ashton. “Hey man. What’s up?” he asks as he answers. “Well, with everything that’s gone on lately with Lori, I want to take her on that babymoon. So, I’ve got the pilot getting the plane ready and booked the hotel. Alice is going with us so I was wondering if you could keep Clyde or us.” I say. “Of course. How long are you planning on being gone?” he asks. “One week. But I need help with something while I’m gone.” I tell him. “What’s that?” he asks. “Lori was telling me about this woman that her dad used to bring around. She said the woman tried to get him to stop drinking and stop using and he ran her off. She treated Lori like she was her own daughter. Tried to protect her from that prick but she hasn’t seen her since she was ten years old. Do you think that Rico could locate her and maybe have her here when we get back?” I ask. “What’s her name?” he asks. “Mila Jacobs.” I tell him. “How old would she be?” he asks. “About her dad’s age.” I tell him. “I’m on it. When are you leaving?” he asks. “In the morning. We are leaving here about ten in the morning.” I tell him. “We’ll be there when you leave to see you off and get Clyde.” He tells me. “Thanks man. I owe you.” I tell him before ending the call.
That evening, Lori moves to her office to work on her journaling and while she’s in her office, Alice comes in to help me get our things packed. Once Alice helps me move everything to the closet downstairs, I walk into Lori’s office to check on her. “Knock knock.” I say as I open the door. She looks up from her journal, where she’s sitting in her window seat. “Hey.” She says softly. “How are you feeling?” I ask. She closes her journal and pulls her feet up under her and I move to sit on the seat next to her. “I’m okay, I think. Putting all of it down on paper, helps.” She tells me. “Good.” I say before reaching for her hand. “It’s time for bed baby. We have a lot to do tomorrow.” I tell her and she nods before we head to bed.
