Mark covered his face with his hands in shame, he waited for a few minutes to turn on the ignition, after waiting and watching the cab Nalishebo had got on disappear in his eyes, he switched on the car engine and hit the road following the cab traces behind. He pulled over a few meters away from Nalishebo’s place but where it was reasonable enough to catch a glimpse of her as she was being dropped off by the gate. When he had seen her walk inside the yard he drove off.
On his way to his parent’s place, he had a change of mind he made a U-turn going back to his friend's apartment Anthony at Victoria Courts in kansenshi. Anthony’s apartment was luxuriously decorated with expensive furniture and had a little touch of art, a swimming pool and a tennis court.
Anthony was good looking and fascinating with a masculine body, about in his early thirties, with hazel eyes and a light brown skin tone with cherry red thin lips and black hair that was always neatly shaved into a pushover haircut.
Mark wanted to confide in his friend about what had happened earlier that evening, he knocked once and the door swung open, it was as if Anthony has been standing by the door waiting to welcome whoever knocked at his door.
He was surprised though, to see his friend at that hour on his doorstep knowing how strict Mark’s parents were on him. However, he managed to hide a shocked look on his face without his friend Mark noticing.
“Buddy! Long time! How have you been?!” Mark never responded to his gratitude instead went straight ahead to the point.
“Buddy I have screwed up!”
“What have you done that has made you look so worked up hmm…..?”
“I went to my secretary's place just this morning.”
“And……..?”
Mark disclosed everything that went on earlier that day without leaving out anything ending with what emerged at Quest confectionery shop.
“Buddy, what were you even thinking to go to her spot in the first place? You blew it up, and you….you went too far!
“Yeah…..yeah I know, buddy don’t give me that look it wasn’t calculated as it may seem, I don’t know what came in my mind, maybe I got a little tipsy with a few glasses of wine I took.”
No! Buddy don’t blame wine neither was there something wrong with your marbles, instead, blame your feelings.” Anthony snapped.
“Buddy, what are you implying?” He snapped back.
“Buddy stop playing cat and mouse you know perfectly well what am talking about and I only pray it does not cause Gwenn to skin you alive! Besides, you can’t fall in love with your secretary ”Anthony answered mockingly.
The moment he heard Anthony mentioned Gwenn's name, he felt like he had ripped out his heart from his chest. Mark never even realised that he had held his breath with pain. He heaved out heavily. Nobody knew exactly who Gwenn was, except him.
Gwenn a beautiful young lady the daughter of his mother’s best friend with black curled her, with brown eyes and a decent deceiving face, with a nicely curved body to die for, anyone who met her envied her and had in their minds that she was the chosen one. They had no idea that she had a devious mind.
With her being so elegant and classy, she managed to charm Mark's parents with her looks and won a place in their hearts which even led them to propose and arrange the relationship that existed between them. What hurts him the most was, his parents believed her more than him and it was because of her jealousy that had made him find himself working at the headquarters.
She forbade Mark to speak to other ladies other than herself including those that worked at his father's company she saw them as a threat who might strike or snatch him away from her, Gwenn made sure to get anyone who seem to be close to Mark fired by using her accomplice who happened to be no one else but his mother.
He was brought back to reality when Anthony called him out and told him his phone was vibrating. He checked who the caller was, he wasn’t surprised to see that it was his mother.
“Hey, Mum.”
“Mark, where are you? You just stormed out this morning without bothering giving anyone an account of where you had gone, your father and I have been worried sick about your whereabouts, would you mind sharing where you are young man?”
Mark heard the tone of her voice and knew that she was furious with him. She only addressed him young man when she was cross with him. Above all, he knew that for his mother to sound so delirious it was no one but Gwenn's doing because he had refused to take her out neither did he bother to pick any of her calls.
“Mum am not a ch…….” Before he finished his mother cut him off.
“Don’t you use that tone with me young man tell me right this minute, right now, where the hell you are!”
Mark Knew that if he won’t apologise and weaken himself, he was afraid things wouldn’t end agreeably with his mother.
“Mum, sorry for not calling to enlighten you about my whereabouts, please bear with me, just not to worry you more am at Anthony’s.” He never revealed to his mother where he had spent his whole afternoon cause he was frightened that she wouldn’t have taken it lightly.
“But weren’t you suppose to take Gwenn out?”
“Mum we are not going to start with that, that’s not the reason you called!” He replied in a hoarse voice.
Knowing her son, she knew that he wasn’t delighted with her query, so she had to change the subject quickly,” So what time are you coming back home?”
“I am not coming back for at least the next two weeks, I want to catch up with my Buddy, it’s been a while since we had a men’s chat.”
“Okay, please remember no late nights for you two lads, see you in two weeks! My regards to Anthony, I love you lads.”
“Goodnight Mama, we love you too! And he hanged up.”
After cutting the line, Anthony throw a cushion playfully at him and mocked him, always mothers baby when is she going to stop cuddling you huh?!”
Mark threw a cushion back at him and answered, ”Now look who’s talking the most spoiled and pampered man I have ever seen.”
When Nalishebo entered the yard her heart skipped with terror to see no lights were switched on, she unlocked the door and went inside and locked it up, when she turned on the lights she was alarmed to see the note still in the same position she had left it.
She knew that her parents weren’t coming back from the farm, she was going to sleep alone in the whole house. Knowing that she was going to spend the night alone and wasn’t a fan of cooking and her mother who always pushed her to cook wasn’t around, she helped herself with a warm glass of milk and a slice of banana cake that her mother baked the previous day.
She freshened up and brushed her teeth and threw herself on the bed. The moment she closed her eyes, the images of Mark holding her started appearing in her visions, her heartfelt what it had never felt before, such that she kept turning and tossing in bed. Nalishebo couldn’t take it anymore, so she sat up and switched on her phone.
Something caught her attention as she was going through the messages, it was an unknown number and the am sorry message was typed in blocked letters. She was never tempted to reply to it cause she had no clue of whom the unknown number belonged to. She scrolled up to the next text, she found her mother’s message informing her that they couldn’t back home from the farm because there were a lot of things that needed to be attended to. As she kept reading her eyes became heavy. Before she knew she was fast asleep.
