Lines We Can’t Cross
Leo wasn’t sure what was more unsettling—the threat, or the way Adrian reacted to it.
It wasn’t just anger.
It was personal.
And that scared Leo more than he wanted to admit.
Because this wasn’t just about a contract anymore.
It hadn’t been for a while.

The Tension Between Us
The palace felt different that night.
Leo wasn’t sure if it was because of the phone call, or because Adrian had practically declared war on Duke Alistair for him. Either way, the weight of something unspoken pressed between them as they sat in Adrian’s private lounge, both nursing their drinks in silence.
Adrian finally broke it. “I’ll have security tightened around you.”
Leo scoffed, swirling the whiskey in his glass. “Great. So I’ll have a personal bodyguard to make sure I don’t trip over a carpet and die mysteriously in the next week?”
Adrian’s gaze flicked to him, unimpressed. “This isn’t a joke.”
Leo sighed, leaning back into the couch. “I know it’s not a joke, Adrian. But this wasn’t part of the deal. The threats, the politics, the power plays—I didn’t sign up for this.”
Adrian’s jaw clenched. “You can still walk away.”
Leo looked at him. “Do you want me to?”
A long pause.
Adrian didn’t answer.
And somehow, that said more than words ever could.

The First Touch
Leo wasn’t sure why he did it.
Maybe it was the silence.
Maybe it was the way Adrian looked—tense, exhausted, carrying the weight of a kingdom on his shoulders.
Or maybe it was because, for the first time since they met, Leo saw something real beneath the prince’s perfectly controlled mask.
He reached out.
Fingers brushing against Adrian’s wrist. A fleeting touch—hesitant, testing boundaries neither of them wanted to acknowledge.
Adrian stilled.
Leo almost pulled away, but then—
Adrian’s fingers curled, barely, just enough to hold on.
Leo’s breath caught.
He looked up, expecting resistance, expecting Adrian to pull away first.
But Adrian didn’t.
He just held his gaze, silver-blue eyes darker than usual, something unreadable flickering beneath them.
It wasn’t just tension.
It was something far more dangerous.
And neither of them were ready for it.

A Message Left Unread
Across the city, Duke Alistair Halloway sat in his study, swirling a glass of brandy, irritation flickering across his face.
The prince’s threat still lingered in his mind.
He’s more attached than I thought.
That changed things.
It meant Leo Carter wasn’t just a hired act.
It meant he was a weakness.
Alistair’s lips curled into a slow, calculating smile.
And then, he picked up his phone.
Dialed a number.
And whispered a single, dangerous command.
"Find out everything about Leo Carter."
Secrets We Keep
Leo stared at the message on his phone. The name on the screen was familiar—Diana.
He hesitated. It had been weeks since he last spoke to her, since before he’d even accepted Adrian’s offer.
He tapped the screen, his thumb hovering over the message.
"I need to talk. Meet me."
The air felt too heavy in the suite, the silence too much for him to process. Adrian was gone for the evening, probably drowning in royal business, but Leo couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something was off—something wasn’t quite right.
A part of him wanted to just forget about it. Forget about everything, go back to his life before Velandria. But another part—the part that had always been curious—pulled him toward the message.
He grabbed his coat and headed for the door.

A Conversation Under Moonlight
The café was quiet, almost empty at this hour, but Leo spotted Diana immediately. She was sitting by the window, her red hair tucked behind her ear, her eyes trained on the street outside.
When she saw him, she didn’t smile.
She didn’t wave.
Instead, she gestured to the seat across from her, her expression unreadable.
Leo sat down. “What’s going on, Diana? You don’t usually do cryptic.”
She leaned forward, her voice low. “You’ve gotten yourself into something deeper than you realize, Leo.”
He blinked, leaning back. “What does that mean?”
Diana’s gaze flickered around the café before locking back on him. “I’ve been watching you. I’ve been watching Adrian. And the Velandrian royal family is a lot more dangerous than you think. It’s not just Alistair you need to worry about.”
Leo felt the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. “What do you know?”
Diana leaned in further. “I know who you really are. Why you’re here.”
Leo’s heart skipped a beat. “What are you talking about?”
Her eyes were steady. “You’re not just playing a part in their game. You’re part of it. And if you don’t watch your back, you’ll be the one who ends up played.”
Leo stared at her, trying to read her expression. “You’re not making sense.”
“I know more than I should,” Diana said quietly. “And I’m trying to protect you. This isn’t just about a fake relationship. It’s about control, about power. And Adrian… he’s involved.”
Leo’s pulse quickened. “What do you mean? What’s he done?”
Diana hesitated. She opened her mouth to speak, but then stopped herself. “I can’t say too much. But if you’re not careful, you’re going to get dragged into something far more dangerous than you’ve imagined.”
Leo’s mind raced. “What are you telling me?”
She stood up, her expression hardening. “I’m telling you to get out. While you still can.”
She turned to leave, but Leo reached out, grabbing her arm. “Diana, wait. What’s going on? Who’s after me?”
Her eyes softened, just for a second, before she pulled away. “I can’t help you anymore, Leo. You’re too far in.”
With that, she walked out of the café, leaving Leo sitting there, more confused and afraid than ever.

Adrian’s Secret
The night was still. The only sound was the rhythmic ticking of the clock in Adrian’s private study.
Leo hadn’t planned on coming here. But after his conversation with Diana, he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to Adrian’s involvement in all of this than he had been told.
The door opened before he could knock. Adrian stood in the doorway, his expression guarded. “What are you doing here?”
Leo didn’t answer immediately. He just walked past Adrian into the study, the tension thick between them.
Adrian followed him, his gaze intense, unreadable.
“Something’s going on, Adrian,” Leo said quietly, turning to face him. “I talked to Diana. She said I’m too deep in this mess. That there’s something I don’t know.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
“Is that true?” Leo pressed. “What aren’t you telling me?”
Adrian stepped closer, his voice low. “You should have listened to her.”
Leo’s stomach flipped. “Why? What’s happening?”
Adrian looked away, his jaw tight. “You don’t understand. There are things I can’t explain. Not yet.”
“Then explain something to me,” Leo said, voice rising with frustration. “Why am I involved in this? Why is my life being used as a pawn in some royal game? What do you want from me?”
Adrian met his gaze, his silver-blue eyes full of intensity.
Leo’s heart hammered in his chest as Adrian whispered, “I need you, Leo.”
The words hit him like a storm.
And in that moment, Leo realized that the danger wasn’t just from the outside world.
It was coming from within.
