Chapter nine.
The journey.
Minthie point of view.
I was walking on a clear, moonlit summer night, through thick vegetation. I could swear that something was following me from the shadows, I could hear her strong breathing, and it was something strange. Surreal. Out of the foliage an immense animal leaped out, it had huge eyes that reflected the moonlight. The animal ran towards me, panic invaded me and I prepared to receive the impact, but the animal passed by, persuading some strangers who were behind me.
I opened my eyes, and covered my face with my hands. You had to see my brain's obsession with having strange dreams at the least inopportune moments. I got up from the forest floor and stretched my body that was exhausted from walking so many days in a row.
We were traveling for a week with Bleddyn and we couldn't find the base where Cruor had taken my sister. Ascia and the others had tried to persuade us to stay. I no longer trusted them and I would not stay in the same place as them and I told them. I could see that my words had hurt them but I no longer cared. I wanted to get my sister back so we could go somewhere else. Far from all this.
We chose a place to rest and eat. A small clearing near the river. I sat on a rock and took out my food container. Bleddyn looked at me and smiled slightly. I withdrew my gaze quickly, not wanting him to see how he affected me. I still didn't trust him fully even though he kept me alive and healthy these days of travel. I looked at him out of the corner of my eye again and I saw him watching a bush carefully, I wondered what was going through his mind at that moment. I heard a noise coming from the bush and my attention focused on this one as well. From the bush came a small black rabbit leaping happily as it sniffed the air around it. I could see Bleddyn tense up and get into attack position. My brow furrowed not understanding the reason for his movements until I saw him lean forward and go after the little animal.
It took him a long time to react because before he could say anything or stop him, Bleddyn lunged at the animal. Making me jump in surprise Bleddyn rolled on the ground kicking up dust and when the dust cleared I could see that Bleddyn had the little rabbit between his teeth, which had grown in seconds. Bleddyn stood up gracefully and took the rabbit out of his mouth and walked over to the campfire we had lit for the night.
"Do you like rabbit?" He asked smiling. Picking up the rabbit that apparently died instantly.
"Yes! But alive!" I exclaimed.
Bleddyn laughed and began to clean the rabbit for roasting. I turned my face not being able to see such actions and I began to eat disgustedly what I had packed. I loved hearing him laugh but now it's had a price that I didn't like at all. I sighed and looked at him again. The rabbit was already cooking and he was at the riverbank cleaning his hands.
"Well, I suppose if food runs out you'll be able to hunt down our dinner." I said resigned. She had to admit that she loved rabbit meat. My father prepared it on special occasions. But it wasn't something she was going to admit out loud.
After finishing eating we prepare to continue our walk. We had rested all night and part of the morning and it was time to leave. We brush our teeth in the river and continue on our way. I wish I had taken a bath with Bleddyn in the river but I had given up on the idea when I saw him walk in naked. Now I regretted it because I didn't smell good and I knew that he could smell me perfectly. But the shame had won me over and now I regret it.
Most of us walked in silence. Which served me to sink into my thoughts and put in order the mess that were my emotions. We walked for hours until night fell again. It had been a long day. We sat on the grass, there were enough branches around the place to build another fire, but Bleddyn didn't want to risk leaving too many traces. I settled with my back against the bark of a tree and closed my eyes. I was tired my feet ached and I was frustrated that we couldn't find our way.
I must have fallen asleep as I woke up when a little click woke me up. My back stiffened when I looked around and I didn't see Bleddyn anywhere until he broke the calm of the forest by running towards me. Behind him came an evolved running towards my direction. Watching them run towards me gave me the strength to gain momentum and get up as fast as I could and run away while screaming. Bleddyn managed to ram him before the evolved reached me, and they both fell to the ground. They started fighting instantly. He could hear the roars of fury and screams of pain from both of them. It distressed me to hear Bleddyn's screams of pain, even though I was angry with him, I didn't want to see him suffer.
Bleddyn raked the other's face with his claws. The evolved staggered and responded with another blow. Bleddyn fell backward into the forest a little further. The evolved lunged against him and crushed him to the ground. I was horrified. I didn't know how to help him. The being gave what appeared to be a laugh and that's when I realized that Bleddyn was choking, as the being's foot was at his throat.
"Stop it! Leave it!" I screamed. I ran desperately towards them. He hated seeing Bleddyn in this situation. I jumped on the back of the being taking him by surprise. I pulled out a small knife from my hip and plunged it into his hand as he pulled her back to get me off his back. The evolved screamed in pain and released Bleddyn, giving him time to recover and return to the fight. The evolved one somehow managed to get me off the top and threw me to the ground. My head hit the ground hard which made me dizzy and lost much of the fight.
I was trying to get up off the ground when hands grabbed my waist and helped me up. The scent of Bleddyn invaded my senses and instantly calmed me. I turned around to look at it and see if it had any serious damage. But miraculously he only had a cut on his lower lip.
I turned my face to see the unconscious evolved on the ground a few feet from us.
"We should go." Bleddyn's voice caught my attention. I shook my head and we grabbed our things and walked back through the woods. Bleddyn was holding my hand since I couldn't see well in the dark of night. The contact made my skin crawl. It had been so long since I touched him that I had already forgotten the sensation his touch caused me.
We stopped after a few hours walking. We entered what appeared to be a cave. I waited for Bleddyn at the entrance while he went to inspect the interior of the cave to see if there was something that could harm us inside. When he came back he informed me that it was safe to go inside and we settled inside.
"You're good?" I nodded, I was more worried about him right now.
"And you?"
"Don't worry. We heal fast." He said as he sat down next to me. I was barely conscious when my head rested on his shoulder, I kept my gaze towards the wall of the cave. Avoiding their eyes. His head rested on mine and his right hand came to meet mine. Our fingers intertwined and I heard him sigh. I looked at the opening of the cave and saw that it was about dawn. My eyes were closing again and I hoped that this time we could rest a little more.
