Chapter teen.
Secrets.
Minthie point of view.
I felt a gentle heat on the skin of my cheek. The soft touch reached my neck and there a soft kiss landed. My brow furrowed, not wanting to wake up. I buried my head in the warm place where it was resting. I felt Bleddyn's chest vibrate with her laughter and I walked away scared.
"You're already awake. Perfect. We have to get going."
I got fully off her chest and sat on the bed confused. I heard her get up and grab her clothes off the floor. Which made me realize that once again he had slept naked next to me. When I got up I stretched my body making the bottom of my shirt rise and show my stomach. I watched as Bleddyn focused her gaze on the exposed part of my body and licked her lips.
"Yesterday I was inspecting the area and I saw that we are closer than expected."
My heart skipped a beat when I heard his words. That meant we were closer to finding my sister.
"We have to plan well how we are going to get in and out without them noticing."
"Do you have something in mind?" I asked for.
"Not yet. We have to think carefully what we are going to do. They are more than us."
"We have to go in Bleddyn, my sister is there." I tell him.
"I know Minthie. But we can't get in without some escape plan. I can't give myself a chance to lose you."
"Am I so important to you?" I ask really curious.
"Mattes are something important for a wolf. We discovered it years ago that you existed. You are the soul that we lack. Consciousness." He explains. "You are what we lack. What fills the void and gives us the strength to move forward. I did horrible things in my past Minthie. One of them I deeply regret now. But with you by my side I know I can improve and I'll do it for you."
"Bleddyn." I started to speak. "I don't know if I'm going to stay after this." I tell him while I move my head to the sides denying.
"Let me show you that I can change and that this was just a stupid mistake. Please Minthie. Give us a chance." Her voice comes out as a plea.
"I don't know if I can trust something that was previously built on a lie." I say sincere. He approaches me and takes my hands between his and brings them to his lips where he places two kisses on each one.
"From now on there will be no more secrets between us." I hear him say while he has his lips pressed to my hands. His eyes focus on mine and I get lost in his colour that shows how sincere he is being.
"Never again Minthie."
A sigh escapes my lips before he nods his head. Bleddyn's mouth parted with a beautiful smile before he pulled me into a tight hug which I reciprocated.
"Thank you. I promise to do everything to make you trust me from now on." His head is on my neck so his voice is muffled.
"All I want to know now is why we are. Why does Bleddyn want us?" I ask hoping that he will answer me.
Bleddyn tensions before releasing me from his embrace. I see him move away a little from me to think what he is going to say to me. Bleddyn rests his hands on his hips in a position that suggests that this situation causes him stress.
"A few years ago the news reached us that the human state was organizing to create a toxin that could eradicate us from the earth." He begins to explain without looking at me. His sight is focused on the exit of the cave. "When the news got the most rebellious in our ranks they got angry and wanted to declare war on them."
"Declare war on us? Haven't they done it before?" I ask sarcastically.
"Believe it or not, no." He answers me. "That caused us to separate since we had different ideals. Me and my people stayed behind and settled in the forest where we knew we were going to be safe. We started to create a society and the elders taught us to hunt and build. We could know how to fend for ourselves. As we were a very large group we divided ourselves and put leaders in order to have control over those under our command. "
"Enyo told me that you were an alpha."
"Exactly. I am the leader of my group. I have over 100 people under my command at the moment." Its preparation amazes me. I didn't think there were that many.
"To maintain order we set laws that would protect us. One of them is to never get close to humans and their bases." He turns around and faces me. His stiff posture as he speaks to me.
"One of which I broke many times going to see you." He tells me while looking me straight in the eye. I look away, embarrassed.
"When news that the toxin was developing reached the ears of the rebels they decided to attack the base where they knew the toxin was being developed."
"Palmanova."
"Yes, Palmanova."
"That's where my parents were killed."
"I know. I was there."
"What?"
"When we found out what they had planned we decided to intervene. But it was too late and when we arrived the base had fallen and most of the inhabitants were no longer alive." He begins to explain. "The rebels were in a frenzy and wanted to go ahead with the plan. The toxin had somehow been evacuated and they didn't know where it was. They explained to us the use they wanted to put it and we were horrified. We know that some of us take pleasure in hurting theirs. But you can't blame them when they were abused for decades. That was when I met and met again with Cruor. She was the leader of the rebels along with Kira and Carnifex, who are her right hands. Or as you might as well say her beta and omega. She shared her plan with me. Cruor knew the lab leader was alive and was looking for him around town. I tried to get him to reverse his plan but he wouldn't listen to me. I know they found your father. That he didn't wanted to tell them anything and that they killed him for that. Your mother was collateral damage in a war that she did not want to be part of. Like most of all of us. Cruor knew of you and your sister. She wanted to take them with her to see yes if they knew something that could help her end this. But somehow they rescued them and took them away and we lost track of them. Until I found you. I did not know that Cruor was following me closely and she discovered you. Do you remember that shadow that attacked us the first day I saw you? "She asked me expectantly.
"Yes, there is no way to forget about that day." I answer sincerely.
"He was one of Cruor's lower-ranking henchmen. She had him follow me. That's why he found you. I know it's my fault that I insisted and kept coming to see you. But I couldn't and didn't want to walk away."
"It's not just your fault. I too could have tried to get away from you. "I tell him sincerely." But I couldn't. I wanted to see you again still not knowing that you were more than a single wolf. "I can see how my words have an effect on her. Her face lights up and she sighs relaxed.
"Cruor was planning for years to enter that base. This was more protected than the other and they could never enter. But you unconsciously showed them the way and they were planning the attack for a few years. When I found out about Cruor's plans I knew what it was. The time to show you who he really was and take you with me. I needed you safe. "
"And my sister, where does she enter this whole story?"
"The experiments never stopped Minthie." That confection amazes me. I open my mouth without knowing what to say and he continues speaking.
"The scientists who survived the first wave of attack after we were released continued their work. They took new evidence objects and kept using the ones that couldn't escape. That went on for years until they settled deep in Palmanova. I know you may not believe me but your father worked with them. "
"That's a lie." I interrupt it. Unable to believe what Bleddyn tells me. My father could never.
"No, it isn't. They had years to perfect the mutations and create new strains. One of which needed to be tested and they couldn't find anyone suitable for that. Until one day your sister had an accident and her results ended up where they shouldn't have. . Your father tried to refuse but to no avail. They took your sister and injected her with a serum that managed to develop a part of her brain and connect her with one of the species they created. "
"No, that is not possible." I say refusing to believe what comes out of her mouth. "How would you know all this? You are lying to me!"
"I'm not lying. Your sister managed to connect with Cruor's mind. It's what you would call telepathy. Nadia managed to communicate with Cruor. The scientists thought they might finally have control over our species again. They had created another super human that she could control. The mind behind all this mess. But what they didn't take into account was that Cruor now had eyes and ears inside the establishment. And Cruor used this new medium to find out all she could. She knows your father gave you something to hide that only you know where it is and she wants it. "
Confused about what Bleddyn had told me, I tried to remember that it was what my father had left me. When the memory of him giving me a small chest came to mind. I remember that it was one of the few things I took with me to Acrosanti. I raised my gaze without realizing that I had lowered it and told Bleddyn what I had remembered.
"I left it at Acrosanti." Bleddyn ran his hands over his face in stress.
"Then they might have it. We have to see if they do."
"But first my sister. I'm not going to leave her in the hands of someone who wants to destroy us."
"After everything I told you, doesn't it make you think they found us because of your sister?" He asks stressed.
"My sister would never do that, much less me" I say angrily.
"Minthie ..." He starts to speak but cut him off before he's done.
"No. I refuse to believe that my sister would do something that would cause me harm. Not when we promised to survive together." I tell him almost on the verge of tears. I walk away from Bleddyn when he approaches to try to comfort me.
"No. I just want to be alone for a moment. This is too much for me." I tell him. I try to pass by her side to go to the exit of the cave but Bleddyn stops me by the arm.
"Stay. I'll hire myself. Just don't go outside alone. It's not safe to walk around here when we're so close to Cruor." Bleddyn lets go of my arm and leaves the cave before I can say anything to him. I sit on the makeshift bed and think about everything he said to me. This is a lot of information and it gives me a headache just thinking about all the things that were a lie in my life.
I knew that my father was involved in things that he should not, but I never imagined that he would use my sister, his own blood in something as nefarious as this. It makes me want to cry just thinking about everything Nadia and I went through because of her. Poor sister. She was the one who carried most of all this tragedy on her back. She was the one who had to bear the blame for something she hadn't done and hadn't asked to be part of. I hope she's okay wherever she is.
I spend a long time sitting alone staring at the cave floor when I make up my mind that I don't have to sit around waiting for my problems to be solved.
I stand up with renewed energy and leave the cave in search of Bleddyn. I find him leaning against a tree deep in thought. My presence catches his eye and he stands upright on his feet again. We stare for a few seconds until I decide to do something that I've wanted to do for a while. I get closer to him making him frown.
Before my courage runs out I push him down the back of his neck and stamp my lips on his. The kiss takes him by surprise and it takes a few seconds to kiss me back with the same force. His hands go to my waist and he pushes me towards his chest. Our difference in height becomes noticeable when he bends lower to deepen the kiss. I separate when I have no more air in my lungs and our eyes connect. Our breaths are irregular and we continue to hold close.
"Does this mean that I am forgiven?" Question with hope.
"This means I'm going to give you a chance." I cut him off when he thinks to keep talking. "A single Bleddyn. Please don't disappoint me."
A huge smile covers his mouth before I put it back together with mine. This kiss is less desperate than the first. We take the time to savour each other's mouths. Mixing our flavours. His forehead sticks to mine when the kiss ends. I can feel that he is happy. I am too.
"You won't regret this." He says before reconnecting our lips for a second. We part and remain embraced for a moment. Enjoying each other's company and warmth.
We enjoy this last moment of peace that we are going to have in these days that are to come.
