Chapter 1

My heart clenched as I looked at the baby girl in her arms. The child's skin was much paler than the woman's, but her eyes and brows were unmistakably Andrea's. Without expression, I asked, "Where's Andrea?" He was nowhere in sight. But I recognized several other faces among the guests. They were Andrea's relatives and friends. I hadn't spent much time with them. I had only met most of them once, at my own wedding. Still, I had a good memory. So this was how bold Andrea had become. He was openly presenting his illegitimate daughter in front of everyone he knew. "Andrea went to the marina to pick up his parents. Their yacht just arrived." Another wave of shock went through me, followed by an ache so sharp in my chest that I could barely breathe. Only 3 days earlier, Andrea's mother, Carmela Bellini, had video-called me and said she planned to spend the month at the Greenvale Estate so I wouldn't worry about her. She had smiled and told me the lavender in the valley was blooming beautifully and promised to send photos. Carmela's health had been poor for the past few years. Every winter, I flew to Roseford to care for her, found the best private physicians, and stayed beside her through rehabilitation. She always told people I was more attentive than her own daughter could have been. I never imagined that Carmela, just like Andrea, had been treating me like a fool. Sophia Rossi didn't notice the turmoil I was struggling to hide. She led me to the guest area, where several impeccably dressed women immediately gathered around her. "Sophia, you're so lucky. Andrea put so much effort into this. Every major crime family on Valedoro Isle has its eyes on this event." "I heard the baby's godfather is the head of the Montelane family. God, you need to make the most of that connection." The women eagerly chimed in. "When you first got together with Andrea, we were all worried for you. A man from a family that powerful can make life complicated. We were afraid you'd suffer." "It's been almost 7 years, and he's still crazy about you. Now you even have a baby. We're all jealous." My fingers tightened around my clutch until my nails bit into my palm. I had been married to Andrea for 7 years. He had been with Sophia for more than 6 of those years. The most absurd part was that I had known nothing for all those years.
