The Key Between Us

I lay there longer than I should, staring at the ceiling, listening to the silence settle. The weight in the room from last night had lifted, leaving my chest unclenched for a little. Whatever shadows had lingered in the corner last night had vanished. It was all just a memory now, fading into the morning light. Flashbacks of how I landed home replayed in my mind. My body aching with the aftermath. What a night, I muttered. Raymond had already dropped Anya off at school. I’d always insisted on handling things myself, saying it was my responsibility that I didn’t need a nanny. Yet here I was, letting the responsibility fall elsewhere. No matter how busy or distant he became, he never stopped showing up for her. It felt less like a marriage and more like co-parents living in the same building. It had already become routine to wake up without Raymond around. He was big on punctuality, already gone before the morning settled in. I forced myself off bed eventually. There were routines waiting for me, responsibilities I could not afford to ignore. Work wasn’t about money for me, but Raymond insisted it was for structure, for purpose. I turned the tap and listened as the tub slowly filled. The water flowing in gently. Steam began to rise to the ceiling. I stepped in slowly, lowering myself down. My legs curled from the heat, stinging at first, then softening into warmth. I needed it. I needed it to wash off whatever last night left on me so i could get through the day ahead of me. i stayed there surrounded by steam and moisture until the heat slowly faded and the water turned cold. I got out. I dressed without much thought, grabbed my keys from the counter and made my way to work. Morning settled in as I drove off, the building came into view soon after. “House Of Mayors” was written boldly across the building. A place where titles mattered. I pulled into one of the reserved parking spots and shut off the engine. The morning air felt fresh as I adjusted my bag and headed inside. The lobby was polished and refined. The echoes of footsteps filled the space. I had barely walked two steps before the receptionist stopped me. ”Morning ma’m, Mr Mayors would like to see you.” She said politely. “The executive office.” I nodded and headed down the hall. The room was empty when I entered, so I grabbed myself a seat. Waiting for Raymond. Moments later, he walked in locking the door behind us. Dresses entirely in black, nothing like the soft-cream toned colors he usually wear for the sake of the company. I looked up already preparing to speak. ”Ray….” The name died in my throat. “Liam?” I uttered. “I didn’t plan to be.” ”Then why are you here.” ”I figured it was time to step back in.” He said calmly ” This company needs direction. Real direction. Not whatever Raymond has been running in my absence.” I stared at him. “Is he aware?” His lips curved slightly. “He will be.” "You can't just walk back in like this." "I can." He replied. "I built half of this place. I never stopped having a say." He paused, eyes on mine. "Raymond already knows i'm back. The rest will catch up." His eyes had already drifted from the seriousness he wore minutes ago, saying otherwise. I stood up with the intention of leaving the room. Whatever had happened last night wasn’t going to define today. I refused to let it resurface, promise or no promise. I wasn’t going to risk being caught. He stepped closer, fingers gripping my hands. “Sit.” He said calmly. I didn’t move. He smiled. “Proving stubborn?” I tried to pull away, but he didn’t let go. Instead he stepped in closer, pulling me gently back in the seat, making my back brush the edge of the chair. He loosened his grip as he leaned down slowly. His thumb brushed slowly over my lower lip, his eyes filled with affection. I swallowed. He tilted my chin up and kissed me. Not fast, not rushed, but slowly like he had nowhere else to be. There was no urgency this time, no hunger. Just warmth. His lips moved against mine gently, like he was learning me instead of trying to claim me. His breath mixed with mine, our mouths moved together in sync. He didn't pull me closer like he wanted more, he held me like this was already enough. "We were good once." He whispered against my lips. And in that kiss, there was no desperation, just acceptance. Not of him, of us. This is what we are. Complicated, unfinished. Just as it was getting good, we were interrupted. Bang Bang A knock tore through the room. I stiffened. "Hello? Is anyone inside?" A man's voice echoed from the other side of the room. "Security." The voice added. "The executive room is booked for a meeting." Damn. I quickly slipped out from Liam's embrace, straightening my dress and hair. "Relax." He said, adjusting his jacket. "I called for the meeting." Of course he did. He walked to the door calmly, like nothing happened, like he wasn't just making love to me moments ago. The security guard offered a brief nod. "Sir." And then left for his duty. Minutes passed and the room started to fill up slowly. Raymond walked in. We greeted like we always did, like nothing happened last night, like our marriage isn't f breaking. The meeting started shortly after. Liam stood at the head of the table. He talked about restructuring, about expansion, about his return. He didn't ask for attention, he commanded it and no one dared look away. Raymond sat beside Liam, listening quietly, his expression unreadable. And then I felt something unsettling. A presence. The presence. The feeling crawled up my spine, like someone's eyes were fixed on me. I shifted in my chair. My eyes still on Liam, nodding faintly, pretending I wasn't aware of it. I refused to glance back, I wasn't ready to confirm what I'd already felt. “Before we wrap up.” Liam added. I’m hosting something at my place this Saturday. Nothing formal. Just a small gathering to mark the partnership and my return. I’d like you all there.” The meeting dissolved around his invitation. Scrape of chairs replaced Liam's voice. Files were gathered. Quiet murmurs followed. One by one, people drifted out. It was over. I carefully gathered my files, ready to leave. Raymond and Liam stood in a corner, deep in conversation. I had no intention of joining them, not when I knew how complicated things were. I quietly got up to leave. As I walked towards the exit, I felt it again. That presence behind me. The one from the meeting. The one from last night. "You dropped this." I didn’t turn immediately. I knew that voice. Slowly, I turned. A man stood there, in a tailored black suit, the fabric smooth and finely pressed. Like it has never known a crease. His hand extended towards me, something glinting between his fingers. A key My house key. For a second, neither of us spoke. Our eyes locked. The feeling crawled up my spine again. No shock. No confusion. Just recognition. "Is there a problem?" Raymond walked in. "No." I answered quickly, too quickly. Raymond's eyes dropped quickly to the key in his hands before lifting to him. "I see you've met. This is Daniel." I immediately snatched the key from Daniel's hand before i could think twice. "Not properly." I replied. "Well," Raymond continued. "He'll be working closely with us." And then turning to me, "And this is my wife....." "Elara." I said, stretching out my hand like a stranger. "Nice to meet you." Daniel said, holding my hand for a second too long. But we both knew we weren't strangers.
