Chapter Five.

"You see, she lent me a big loan which we spent on feeding. Now, I've no means to repay it. So, I've decided that you would go and live with her and be her house help for a while" Mrs Joy said while staring at Isolo.

"But mom, WHY would you borrow money when you know that you've got no idea whatever or means of payment." Isolo asked her mom.

"You see, the business I wanted to do didn't work out as planned. I fell into the hands of scammers who took away most of the money 💰." Mrs Joy said.

"I don't want to be a house help to anyone, I want to live with you. Mother please" Isolo pleaded.

"Don't try to prove stubborn. You must go and serve her for a long period of time to pay off the loan I took." Mrs Joy said.

"Mother please, don't send me away. I don't want to go and serve her. Mom, I can increase the number of satchet water I hawk in order to pay off the loan. Mother, please, she don't look nice to me." Isolo pleaded with her mom, but all her plea fell on deaf ears.

She kept on pleading to no avail.

"Stop behaving stupid. You are not a child! Your mates are already earning money for their family, and here you are refusing to help me." Mrs Joy said to Isolo.

"Can't you see Bella? Bella is already making cool cash for herself. She's not even living with her parents. She's even two days younger than you, but she's more reasonable than you. You would go and be a servant to Mrs Henry so as to pay off my debt. And that is final." Mrs Joy said.

"Mom, please, the Bella your are referring to lost her parents four years ago. I was still a little child then. But you are still alive even though dad is gone. Why are you treating me this way. Mom please." Isolo pleaded on her knees with tears.

"Ohh, Are waiting for me to die before you start fending for yourself?" Mrs Joy asked.

"Noo. But ..." Isolo could not finish her statement before she was interrupted.

"But what? Nonsense!" Mrs Joy said.

"See, I don't have time to talk with you. Get prepared because tomorrow she would come to take you."Mrs Joy said before leaving the house to buy few bags of satchet water that she would sell the next day.

The next day, the woman who she discovered to be Mrs Henry came to take her away.

***END OF FLASH BACK***

"And since then, I've never set my eyes on my mother." Isolo lamented. After three hours of rolling on the bed, she finally drifted into sleep.

After four months, Isolo could no longer bear living with Mrs Henry, because Mrs Henry was a thorn in her flesh. Mrs Henry was using every little mistake made by Isolo to beat her up. Isolo skin was so dry, rough and full of marks from canes and brooms. Mr Henry decided to return Isolo to her mother before his wife kills her. At that time, Isolo was already an adult who was determined in going back to her mother. So as to prevent Isolo from thinking of suing his wife to court, he had to take her back to the village.

They left the house 🏠 very early in the morning, at that time, Mrs Henry didn't know about it, and so she was sleeping peacefully, after arranging the heaps of clothes and plates that Isolo would wash.

At the moto park, Isolo was so happy. She knew that her mom would be shocked to see her, and may send her back because Mr Henry was always sending her money after the deal with her ended. He kept on sending some money as Isolo's salary, so that Isolo would keep on staying with them but it seems that his wife wants to kill her. So he rather return Isolo to her mother than be a partner in crime.

After six tiring hours of travelling, the bus came to it's final bus stop. There, they waited for another bus. The bus would carry them direct to Isolo village, but would take four hours to get there.

They entered the first bus they saw while standing at the bus stop. The bus looked old and full of dust. It was an old rickety bus. They found two seats empty. They were so lucky to see two seats because the bus was full of people. Isolo sat on a seat, and quickly regretted sitting down there. She was in the middle of two fat women who looked like they were returning from the farm and have not taken a bath from the past four weeks. They were really smelly.

Isolo couldn't bear the stench that emanate from their bodies, so she was very uncomfortable. The women noticed how uncomfortable she was. One of them decided to ask her a question.

"My daughter, how are you?" She asked.

Jesus Christ! Her mouth was stinking. "Was she coming out from jungle?" Isolo thought.

" I... I'm fine." Isolo managed to reply.

" Are you traveling alone?" The other one asked.

" No, I'm tra...ve..ling with m... my un.. uncle." Isolo stammered because the foul odor from their bodies was making it difficult for her to breathe.

"Okay. I have a beautiful daughter who is like your age. You reminds me of her." She said.

"Wow." Isolo said dryly, trying to sound as unpleasant as possible.

"Is it that your Ada?" One of them asked the other.

" Yes oo, my sister. "The other replied.

"Hmmm, may God protect her wherever she is." She said.

Ohh God, please let me reach my destination fast. Don't this women don't know that they are smelling? Isolo asked herself.

" What is your name, my daughter " The woman who looked more mature than the other asked her.

"M... my name is Gold." Isolo lied to them. Her mom has already warned her against telling her name or anything personal to a stranger.

"Oh, what a beautiful name." She said.

"Thanks" Isolo replied. Luckily, they didn't realize that she lied. The women noticed that she's not in a good mood, so they decided to let her be.

After three hours of driving, the bus started misbehaving. Within a short time, the bus stopped working. Unfortunately, they were in the middle of the road where no mechanic shop was in sight. The bus driver ,the conductor and some passengers helped in pushing the bus off the road. The driver gave them two options. Either they enter another bus, or they spend the night here inside the bus. Some passengers with extra fare, trekked down the road, in search for another bus. Isolo and Mr Henry was among the few passengers. They had to trekk to the nearest bus stop, so as to get a bus.

At the bus stop, they had to wait for a long time before any bus would show up. Finally, a bus arrived after approximately twenty minutes of waiting. There was a great pushing, pulling and fighting in and outside the bus. Mr Henry and Isolo couldn't enter the bus because they don't want to get hurt. They had to wait for another bus. Fortunately, another bus arrived just after the one before it left. They couldn't find a suitable place to sit in the bus, because the bus had no seat.

After few hours, they arrived at Isolo's village. There was no vehicle, so they had to trekk to Isolo's house which was six miles away from the main market they were.

As soon as they got to Isolo's compound, every where looked deserted. Isolo couldn't find her mom nor their house. Luckily they found a man who looked familiar to Isolo. Mr Henry called him and asked about Isolo's mom. The man gave Isolo the most shocking news she has ever heard.
