Chapter Two

"Is it because of that miserable creature that made you to shout on my daughter that way?"MRS Henry asked, rising up from the dining table .

"Sit down there, where do you think that you are going to?"Mr Henry questioned his wife but she was already heading to the kitchen where Isolo was.

"What's that smell?"Mrs Henry said as she made a beeline to the pot on fire ?. She opened the soup pot and found at that the soup has gone sour.

"Isolo who did this?"She asked.

"I don't know ma, It is not me ma" She replied genuflecting in response.

"Then who did it? Answer my question, bastard! Who touched the soup pot when we were sleeping if not you or your father's ghost?"She asked the poor Isolo who was already dieing of fear.

"Chibuchi! Somtosi! Nnenna and

Akuchi! Come here"Mrs Henry called out to her children.

"Yes mom"Chibuchi and her three sisters answered in unison.

"Did anyone collected meat from this pot yesterday night " She asked her daughters.

"Ah, mom, while going to my room this morning, I saw stains of soup on the ground. Maybe when she took the meat to her room, she didn't know that some of it fell to the ground. We can check the floors of her room to see if it's true." Chibuchi said.

They went to her room and saw the stains?. Isolo was already peeing in her pants, she knew that she was doomed. Mrs Henry waited for her husband to finish eating and leave for work before pouncing on Isolo. She and her four daughters flogged her mercilessly. She was flogged for a crime she didn't commit. After beating her, she poured grinded peppers on every openings in her body. Isolo cried and pleaded for mercy, but all of that fell on deaf ears ?. Isolo was sent to bed ?️ on a hungry stomach, but that was after doing all the house chores. She soaked her pillows that night, because she was in great pain. She wondered why her mom never called to check up on her.

"Maybe I am a burden to her, and so this was a perfect place to dump me☹️. Why do everyone hate me?? God why me? Have I done anything wrong to you? Have I ever offended you? Is my father's death not enough as a punishment?? "Isolo thought aloud in her heart, weeping bitterly.

Two days later, Mr Henry returned from his trip to Dubai. Isolo was washing the family's heap of clothes, when Mr Henry called her from the parlour. She quickly ran to answer him.

"So if you see your elders, you don't greet? That's what your useless father taught you. "Mrs Henry said.

"I'm so sorry ma, good morning everyone"Isolo said.

"Isolo, did you get involved in a fight?"Mr Henry asked as he noticed two of Isolo's teeth missing.

"No sir" Isolo replied.

"Then who did that to you?"Mr Henry asked further.

"Leave this girl, after eating she went out of the house, she didn't come back till night ?, yesterday morning after you left for work." Mrs Henry said.

"Isolo, is it true?" Mr Henry said. Isolo could not reply because she knew what await her if she opens her mouth to talk. Mrs Henry would surely kill her.

"My dear, go on why do you call for this meeting?"Mrs Henry asked. I hope it is not another trip to Dubai.

"Well, I'm afraid it is. I want to plead with all of you, please, do not make Isolo work unnecessarily. I have noticed that the four of you including you, who is their mother that is supposed to teach and tell them what to do no longer do something reasonable with your time. You depend on Isolo to even look for your combs. Mama Nnenna look for suitable work for your daughters. Treat Isolo like a daughter,and one day, she would never forget the good things that you have done for her. That's all. Tomorrow, I would leave for the airport, and may not come back till one or two months time."Mr Henry said before heading to his room.

"Isolo, come on go and finish washing those clothes, mind you, there is nothing like food for you today"Mrs Henry said to Isolo. Later, Mr Henry took Isolo to the clinic because her gum were badly swollen. He bought drugs for Isolo and this made Chibuchi furious.

"WHY on earth should my dad spend money on that golddigger?"Chibuchi asked her mom.

"Don't worry, she would soon pay for it"Mrs Henry comforted her daughter, Chibuchi.

The next morning, Mr Henry left as early as possible to the airport. "Finally, Isolo would pay for it now that the biggest obstacle is gone." Chibuchi thought.

"Isolo come here. Are you going nuts?? Why did you step on me?"Chibuchi asked before giving her two painful slaps.

"I'm sorry, and besides you were not watching were you going to. Why do you hate me so much. Just because of your mistake, you slapped me that way"Isolo said feeling badly hurt.

"You fool, you still have the guts to talk right. You don't know that you're an unwanted visitor here, you are just a useless poor maid."Chibuchi said as tears roll down the cheeks os Isolo.

"I don't have the time to receive insults from you. If I am unwanted, then tell your parents to send me back to my mother. "Isolo said before heading to the kitchen to prepare food for the family. But Chibuchi's words made her moody. It made her miss her dad. Although, she have little memory of her dad, she still adores him. She wishes to reconcile with her mother.

"Isolo! Isolo!"Mrs Henry called as she approached the kitchen where Isolo was.

A hard slap from Mrs Henry brought Isolo into reality. Then a second slap quickly followed, then a third and a fourth. Isolo fell to her knees and then the ceramic plate slip from her hand ✋ and crashed to the floor.

"Ohh, because I slapped you, you then have the guts to break my plate. Can your mother ever be able to afford in her life time?". Mrs Henry asked.

She beat Isolo to stupor right there in the kitchen.

Soon, neighbors started noticing it due to the constant screams, hitting and beating of Isolo.

The next day, Mrs Henry asked Chibuchi to follow Isolo to buy some groceries from the store down the street. On their way, a close neighbor called Isolo and gifted her with some new clothes. Isolo refused to take it. The woman took Isolo to a corner, away from Chibuchi.

"My daughter, I know that the woman you are living with is not your mother. Please, if you love your life run faraway from here. I can help you if you wish. Please, I know that you don't have enough clothes, accept this one."The woman said.

"Ma, please, I can not runaway, my mother would surely return me if I do, and that would worsen my case. And also, I can not accept this. Thank you very much for your kind gestures. I have to be on my way."Isolo said before running off to get the groceries.

"What were you discussing with that woman? Ohh, you have started talking ill about my mother, isn't it? Chibuchi asked.

"No. I did not say anything ill about your mom."Isolo said as they went home.

At home, Chibuchi told her mom that Isolo have been busy spreading lies about them. This made her mom Mrs Henry furious.

"ISOLO! ISOLO! ISOLO!"Mrs Henry called her as she angrily charged towards Isolo, whose heart ❤️ was in the stomach.

"What have I done this time?"Isolo asked herself as her heart beat increased rapidly.
